Tyre makers developing EV-specific rubber to boost ranges, minimise wear

A year since it began marketing EV-specific tyres for electric vans and taxis, British company Enso has launched its first tyres for passenger EVs – specifically, the Tesla Model 3 and Y and Jaguar I-Pace. There are currently more than 1.5 million electric cars on UK roads, and this year car makers expect to sell a further 450,000. Meanwhile, in 2022, 40 million car tyres were sold in the UK in a market worth around £2.3 billion. By 2030, the market is expected to be worth around £3.9bn. Compared with giants such as Michelin and Continental, Enso is a relative minnow, but it punches above its weight thanks to initiatives such as direct sales and an emphasis on technical innovation - including reducing particulate pollution through improved tyre wear rates. 'The sheer weight of EVs impacts the tyres,' said Gunnlaugur Erlendsson, founder and CEO of Enso. 'The fact that you then have high torque and the cars being driven in urban areas also has an impact. The tyres wear down, but we reduce the rate at which they do by using better raw materials, construction and 'recipes', and by collecting data continuously from the field to understand how EVs are reacting to the road.' Balancing tyre wear with optimal rolling efficiency, the desired wet and dry handling performance and acceptable noise levels are among the challenges confronting Enso and other manufacturers of EV tyres. 'Today, tyres are coping with far heavier vehicle loads than in the past,' said Jaap Leendertse, general manager of tyre development at Falken Tyres. 'Previously, you had 50% of a tyre's load capacity utilised; now we are at 70-80%, and that means we are more focused on the tyre lasting longer.' Michelin has stated that EVs wear tyres 20% faster than ICE vehicles. According to Kwik Fit, Tesla models are the heaviest on tyres, while Citroën, Mercedes and BMW models are among those needing fresh tyres at an above-average rate.

Steve Jobs Once Gave A Secretary A Brand New Jaguar Out Of The Blue, Here Is Why The Apple Co-Founder Was So Generous

Steve Jobs earned a reputation for merciless standards, yet sometimes his demand for perfection came wrapped in jaw-dropping generosity. What Happened: Ron Givens, Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) director of quality from 1981 to 1986, recalled the day a secretary shuffled in late. Jobs stormed over to ask why, and she admitted her car had died that morning. "That afternoon, he walks into her office, tosses a set of keys to a brand-new Jaguar and says, 'Here, don't be late anymore,'" Givens told WRAL in an interview back in 2011. A Jaguar XJ cost roughly $35,000 in 1981, about $123,000 in today's dollars when adjusted for inflation, making the spur-of-the-moment gift an extraordinary employee perk. Learn how you can invest with $1,000 at just $0.30/share. The story illustrates the paradox of Apple's co-founder, who was a boss employees feared, yet one who could motivate "out of your socks," as Givens put it. Jobs, then 26, lived and breathed the company, prowling hallways to grill engineers on pixel placement one minute and springing surprises the next. Givens, two decades older, said he often thought Jobs's ideas were "stupid" until their brilliance clicked later. Back in 2011, he said he still kept a $1,000 Steuben-glass apple Jobs had handed him unannounced. Why It Matters: Steve Jobs ran Apple with icy precision, insisting on "only A players" and admitting that firing weaker talent, though "very painful," was necessary to maintain high standards. His late-night demands could left teams exhausted, and Pixar's Pete Docter later said Jobs's 3 am phone calls were a work trait he would "never repeat." Elon Musk openly praises that edge, agreeing with Jobs that a CEO's chief duty is "recruiting exceptional talent" rather than hand-holding staff, and he echoes Jobs's view that "the greatest people are self-managing." Not every leader wants the full Jobs playbook. Bill Gates once called comparing Musk to the "genius" Jobs a "gross oversimplification," warning that charisma can mask managerial chaos. Man offers his Jaguar car in exchange for return of 20ft elephant slide

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A pensioner says he would give up one of his Jaguars to get his beloved 20ft-long elephant slide back after the council confiscated it. The decades-old fibreglass play equipment was taken away from Trevor Robinson's home after complaints from neighbours, he claims. The 71-year-old had the 8ft tall slide delivered after spotting sub-contractors preparing to remove it from a nearby leisure park in Gillingham, Kent, two months ago. Trevor had initially planned to create a pond in his back garden for the slide, nicknamed Ellie, so children in the neighbourhood could use it. But Ellie was too heavy to carry into the back garden, so the retired forklift driver assembled it in his driveway instead. Now, Medway Council has removed it after multiple complaints and has deemed it an 'unsafe' structure. Trevor said: 'I saw them taking it away [from the leisure park] and said, 'no I will have it.' They thought I was joking. Then he delivered it to my house for free. 'People loved it. I wanted to let kids and their parents come round and use it and give the money to charity.' Trevor had hatched a plan to use a crane to lift Ellie over his house to become the 'crowning glory' of his collection of garden ornaments. However, on Thursday last week, one of the subcontractors came by, saying that due to neighbour complaints, the council had ordered him to take the slide away, he claims. Trevor, who has been attending the Strand leisure park – Ellie's former home – since he was a child, says that the elephant is part of his fondest memories. Now, the self-proclaimed 'eccentric' says that he is willing to pay anything to get Ellie back – even to give up one of his Jaguar cars. 'I think it is diabolical. All the kids loved it. If they haven't broken it up, then I will pay to get it back. I miss it; it has been a part of my life for so long,' he said. 'Everyone is really upset that it is gone. I want to get it back, I don't care what it costs. I will pay any money – I just want her back. If they let me have it back, then they can have my Jaguar.' More Trending The pensioner said he believes 'jealousy' and a dislike for the Union Flag, which is painted on the slide, resulted in the tragic result. 'It was painted with Union Jacks on the side. There are a few neighbours who don't like me, but all their kids were waiting to have a go on it,' he said. A Medway Council spokesperson said: 'During our annual health and safety audit of The Strand, the slide, which is now more than 30 years old, was not deemed to be safe, so we took the decision to remove it. 'Medway Norse arranged for a subcontractor to remove the structure. Once we became aware that a resident had the slide following complaints, we arranged for it to be picked up so it could be safely disposed of, as it is an unsafe structure.' Family-run car dealership group founded over 100 years ago set to be taken over by US giant in just weeks

A CENTURY-old car dealership group could soon be taken over by a major US company, according to reports. Family-run group Hatfields is rumoured to be on the cusp of being acquired by the American giant Lithia, Car Dealer Magazine has reported. Sources close to the group told the magazine that staff had been informed of the deal via email. Insiders have told the outlet that the email tells employees that it will be made official on August 1. Lithia did not respond to Car Dealer Magazine 's requests for comment. Hatfields boss Gareth Williams told Car Dealer: "We have no comment to make at this moment in time." Another senior source told Car Dealer: "I have been told locally by many staff working at Hatfields branches that the business has been bought out by Lithia. "All staff at Hatfields had an email On Wednesday 4 June at 7:30am. "The takeover will be complete on August 1." Hatfields was founded by Ernest Hatfield in 1922, and was named Jaguar's Partner of the Year in 2022. It operates dealerships that represent Jaguar, Land Rover and others throughout the Midlands and North West. Hatfields would join others like Evans Halshaw, Stratstone and Jardine Motors under Lithia's wings if the rumours prove to be true. Chilling moment thieves steal car with wireless device in seconds as new doc reveals how Brit motors end up in Lithuania The Sun has also approached Lithia for comment. It comes after three major UK car dealerships are set to close in just days as a US giant makes "drastic cutbacks". In March, The Sun reported that Group 1 Automotive would shut three Volkswagen Group sites. The affected sites were Audi Approved Hyde, and Volkswagen Wirral and Cheltenham. A spokesman for Group 1 Automotive told Car Dealer: "Due to the ongoing challenges presented by the current economic climate, we are unfortunately having to take some difficult decisions, which include the closure of our VW Wirral and Cheltenham stores, and Audi Approved Hyde."
