Minister, Chinese delegation discuss projects under CPEC Phase-2
ISLAMABAD: A senior Chinese delegation, Thursday, discussed development projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Phase-2 with Planning Ministry for preparation of the upcoming 14th Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting in next month (July). Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal hosted a senior Chinese delegation in Islamabad for a luncheon meeting aimed at boosting cooperation under the second phase of the CPEC. The Chinese delegation was led by Hu Zhaoming, spokesperson of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (IDCPC) and Director General of its Information and Communication Bureau. He was accompanied by senior officials including Hu Xiaodong, Fan Shilian, and Li Zishuo. Diplomats from the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad, including Deputy Chief of Mission Shi Yuanqiang and Attaché Zhang Duo, were also in attendance. During the meeting, Minister Iqbal highlighted the significance of the upcoming JCC meeting and said that it would be a key milestone in CPEC's journey, with preparatory working group sessions already underway to ensure smooth proceedings. He emphasised the need to nurture critical thinking and innovation among Pakistan's youth, drawing parallels with China's success in aligning public confidence with national development goals. He appreciated China's continued support and underlined the importance of people-to-people and media exchanges in deepening bilateral relations. The discussions also featured innovative ideas to bridge cultural and information gaps between the two nations. These included proposals for exchange programmes between journalists and digital content creators, as well as sharing English-dubbed Chinese content on popular OTT platforms to help Pakistani youth better understand Chinese society and CPEC developments. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ataullah Tarar, who also attended the meeting, suggested initiating a digital exchange programme specifically for journalists and influencers with strong social media presence from both countries. The goal, he said, is to promote mutual understanding and dispel misconceptions about CPEC through authentic storytelling. Amenah Kamal, Member Development Communica-tion from the Planning Commission, supported the idea and proposed that dubbed content in English and Urdu should be made widely accessible through digital streaming platforms to engage young audiences more effectively. Other senior attendees included Javed Sikandar, Chief Governance at the Planning Commission, Dr Nadeem Javaid, Vice Chancellor of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), and Dr Muzamil Zia, CPEC's Regional Connectivity and Infrastructure Specialist. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen Pakistan-China cooperation through dialogue, creativity, and inclusive public engagement. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

HC cancels order appointing administrator in Diocesan Trust Association
MUMBAI: The Bombay high court has struck down an order of the Joint Charity Commissioner (JCC), appointing an administrator on the Bombay Diocesan Trust Association (BDTA), and directed the Charity Commissioner to expeditiously decide all pending change reports submitted by the Association. The Association holds and manages Anglican Trust properties like churches, institutions, schools, cemeteries spread over Western India - across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and North Karnataka. It had approached the high court, challenging the order passed by JCC on December 18, 2019, based on complaints, alleging mismanagement and illegalities, including pilfering of funds and transfer of Trust properties. Recording that the term of the last elected body had ended on October 14, 2018, but it was continuing to manage the affairs of the Trust, the JCC appointed an assistant charity commissioner as administrator for the Association and ordered him to prepare a voters list and take steps for holding elections in consonance with the Memorandum of Association and applicable rules and regulations. The administrator, however, could not take charge of the affairs of the Association, as the high court had passed an interim stay on the JCC order and the Association continued to manage and administer their affairs and properties. A bench of justice MS Sonak and justice Jitendra Jain on Friday struck down the JCC order after noticing that under the Memorandum of Association, the initial directors were termed as ex-officio directors and under the scheme of the Association, one-third of the other directors retire every year and the vacancies are filled in the annual general meeting. Therefore, the court said that the statement that the term of the elected body expired on October 14, 2018 was not entirely correct. 'At the highest, it could be said, the term of one third of the Board of Directors expired on the said date and therefore, there was a necessity to hold an election to fill in the vacancies caused by the retirement of one third of the directors,' said the bench. As regards the appointment of the administrator, the court said that the JCC simply took note of the allegations of mismanagement and illegal activities made in the applications filed before him and concluded that there was a need to appoint a suitable person as administrator. 'It is apparent the Joint Charity Commissioner has not himself examined the allegations to determine whether even prima-facie, they have any substance or not,' said the court. 'Merely because there are allegations, the Joint Charity Commissioner has concluded that it would be unfair for the office bearers to continue and has proceeded to appoint the Administrator,' it added. After the petitioner body pointed out that during the pendency of the petition, there have been regular annual general meetings and vacancies filled in, but several change reports have been pending with the JCC, the court directed the authorities to dispose off the change reports in six months.

Instacart slashes prices for a surprising reason
It was the summer of 1999. My mom had just dropped me off at day camp at the local JCC. The sun was already beating down, and the blacktop outside the gymnasium shimmered with heat. I had my Lisa Frank notebook, an extra scrunchie around my wrist, and a lunchbox filled with what I looked forward to all morning: a mini-hot dog Lunchables, a packet of Dunkaroos, and a Capri Sun. After carefully stabbing the straw through the foil pouch, I'd suck it down like I had been stranded in the desert. Related: Target struggles to stop spiral amid customer backlash Then I'd fold the empty Capri Sun into a rectangle and pretend it was a flip phone, wedging it between my shoulder and ear as I strutted around the picnic table like I was deep in conversation. To five-year-old me, this was peak cool. Those lunches weren't just were mini moments of freedom. Paired with afternoons of water games, tie-dye shirts, and making friendship bracelets, that summer felt like magic. I hadn't thought about that version of summer in a long time. But now, one company is bringing it all back. Time to dust off the jelly sandals - and maybe the old Capri Sun flip phone, too. Image source: Instacart Instacart's new national campaign, "Summer Like It's 1999," is more than a clever ad play. It's a data-backed move aimed at drawing in Millennial shoppers who are balancing inflation with a craving for simpler times. According to a Harris Poll survey commissioned by Instacart, 79% of Americans who grew up in the '90s say they often reflect on their childhood summers. That insight inspired the platform not only to embrace the vibe of the decade (with commercials full of butterfly clips, water guns, and baggy jeans) but also to slash prices on grocery items that defined it. Related: Lululemon's latest viral product reveals something much bigger Through September 5, shoppers can get up to 47.2% off classic summer snacks like Capri Sun, Bagel Bites, Otter Pops, Kool-Aid, and more. That discount isn't arbitrary. It's based on the CPI change between 1999 and now, a nod to the real economic pressures families are facing. The idea is clear: if you're going to take shoppers on a trip down memory lane, make it affordable. In Q1 2025, Instacart saw orders rise 14% year-over-year to 83.2 million. Revenue also climbed 9% to $897 million. Company's CEO Fidji Simo said the brand is doubling down on what matters most to customers: "convenience, affordability, quality, and selection." Instacart has made it clear it wants to be more than a utility. The brand is now betting big on emotional connection - leaning into joy, simplicity, and the power of shared memories to deepen loyalty. And the business case is there, too. Advertising revenue climbed 14% year-over-year, driven by brands investing more heavily in Instacart's growing media network. By leaning into campaign storytelling, the platform is positioning itself as a compelling space for high-intent advertising, not just grocery logistics. More on retail: Beloved discount grocery chain has massive US plansTrader Joe's rival launches wine battle with new private labelKroger announces big store change amid price gouging accusations The '90s campaign also supports another Instacart focus: increasing value perception. With grocery inflation still top of mind, even a small discount on nostalgic brands can feel like a meaningful win. By combining AI-driven personalization, smart pairing tools, and strategic partnerships with Chase and United, Instacart is working to turn occasional shoppers into loyal, repeat customers. The summer push is a blend of emotional resonance and strategic timing. It tells shoppers: "We get expensive. But it can still be fun." Whether this nostalgia-fueled play creates long-term growth remains to be seen. But for now, it's kicking off summer with a smile. Jordan is strategic gateway for Brazil's investments in region', says JCC president
AMMAN — President of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Khalil Hajj Tawfiq on Sunday emphasised the importance of positioning the Kingdom as a strategic hub and gateway for Brazilian companies seeking to participate in regional reconstruction projects, particularly in Syria. Speaking at the Jordanian-Brazilian Economic Forum on Sunday, Hajj Tawfiq highlighted that Jordan is implementing an Economic Modernization Vision, initiated under Royal directives, aimed at building a national economy rooted in growth, sustainability, and improving citizens' quality of life. He explained that the modernisation vision focuses on several promising sectors, including food industries, pharmaceuticals, garments, energy, trade, mining, tourism and information technology. He affirmed that these sectors offer abundant opportunities that align with investors' ambitions, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The participants of the forum included, business leaders and executives from various economic sectors in both countries, as well as officials from Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the investment promotion agency of São Paulo State. Hajj Tawfiq described the forum as a "unique" opportunity to explore "promising" investment prospects in Jordan, while also serving as a gateway to the Brazilian market, one of the largest in Latin America and the world, characterised by a "massive" consumer base and "advanced" sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, technology and renewable energy. President of the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, William Adib Dib Junior, said the launch of the multi-sector delegation to Jordan marks the beginning of a "significant" new Brazilian engagement that reflects the depth of relations based on cooperation and integration. 'This initiative is the fruit of joint cooperation between the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, the Brazilian Embassy in Amman, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and the Invest SP agency of São Paulo State, in collaboration with the Jordan Chamber of Commerce and the Jordanian Ministry of Investment, in addition to the participating Brazilian companies,' Junior said. He said that trade relations between the two countries have spanned decades, built on strategic integration and mutual support. Junior added that Brazil plays a "central" role in enhancing food security in Jordan by exporting essential foodstuffs, while Jordan supplies Brazil with fertilisers that support the global competitiveness of its agricultural sector. He also noted that bilateral trade between the two countries reached about $650 million in 2024. Brazilian exports increased by 34 per cent, reaching $540 million, the highest figure recorded since 2013, while Jordanian exports to Brazil also achieved "notable" figures, reflecting the growing balance in trade between the two sides, Petra, reported.

Security tightened at Jewish center, Boulder on edge after fiery attack
Security tightened at Jewish center, Boulder on edge after fiery attack Show Caption Hide Caption FBI investigating 'attack at Colorado mall The FBI is investigating a report of a "targeted attack" in a Boulder, Colorado mall. BOULDER, Colo. − A pedestrian mall was quiet and some police barricades were being removed Monday, but many in the community remained on edge after a "targeted" terror attack by a man with a makeshift flamethrower and firebombs set eight people aflame and fueled chaos on the streets. The attack Sunday afternoon came as a group of demonstrators called for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. One of the burn victims is a Holocaust survivor, a local rabbi said. The suspect, identified by authorities as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, was taken into custody at the scene and was scheduled to appear in court Monday. The victims, ages 52 to 88, suffered injuries ranging from serious to minor, Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said Sunday. Police, in a brief statement Monday, said no victims had died overnight. The Boulder attack occurred at a "regularly scheduled, weekly, peaceful event," FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek said. Anyone with videos, social media posts or digital recordings was asked to upload them at 'We stand in full solidarity with those targeted,' Michalek said. 'We will continue to ensure that justice is pursued swiftly, support is provided to victims and their communities, and preventative action is taken to protect everyone's safety.' 8 injured in Boulder: Group had gathered to support Israeli hostages Four miles from the scene of the attack, security was extra tight at the sprawling Boulder Jewish Community Center campus, where outdoor summer camp programs were being held under the watch of both police and armed private security. The JCC serves as a central hub for many area Jewish residents, and security guards are a regular at the JCC said they are still discussing how to best honor the victims of the attack and declined to comment publicly. "When events like this enter our own community, we are shaken. Our hope is that we come together for one another," center officials said in a social media post. "Strength to you all." The attack fell on the Jewish holiday of Shavuot and came less than two weeks after two Israeli Embassy aides were fatally shot outside a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C. Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and his girlfriend Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, were shot after a Young Diplomats reception hosted by the American Jewish Committee. The suspect in that attack, Elias Rodriguez, 31, chanted "Free Palestine, free Palestine," after being taken into custody by event security. He is charged with a long list of crimes including federal and local murder charges and the murder of foreign officials. The May 21 shooting is being investigated as a hate and terrorism crime. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday expressed solidarity with the victims who were attacked "simply because they were Jews. " He said he was confident U.S. authorities would prosecute "the cold blood perpetrator to the fullest extent of the law." "The antisemitic attacks around the world are a direct result of blood libels against the Jewish state and people, and this must be stopped," Netanyahu said in a statement. Soliman, of El Paso County, Colorado, was taken into custody after witnesses pointed him out, authorities said. He was booked on multiple preliminary charges including first-degree murder and using explosives or an incendiary device while committing a felony. Police said Soliman was injured in the incident and taken to a hospital to be medically evaluated before he was booked in the Boulder County jail. Stephen Miller, President Donald Trump's deputy chief of staff, said Soliman overstayed a tourist visa issued in 2022. "In response, the Biden administration gave him a work permit," Miller said in a social media post. "Immigration security is national security. No more hostile migration. Keep them out and send them back." Multiple outlets said Soliman is an Egyptian national, including CBS and Fox News, citing unnamed sources. FBI agents searched Soliman's home in El Paso County hours after the attack, the agency's field office in Denver said on X. Read more here. Soliman was in the United States on a B-2 tourism visa, according to Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. A B-2 visa is generally used for tourism and is issued by the State Department. In general, the visas are valid for six months and can be used for vacations, visiting relatives, medical treatment or participation in music, sports or events. The State Department issues millions of B-1 and B-2 visas each year. B-1 visas are similar to B-2 and allow for nonimmigrants to visit for six months for conferences and business reasons. Soliman entered the United States in August 2022 and his visa expired in February 2023. In addition, McLaughlin wrote on X that Soliman applied for asylum in 2022. That claim was likely still pending. As of March, the immigration court backlog was around 3.6 million cases, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. − Nick Penzenstadler Rabbi Israel Wilhelm, the Chabad director at the University of Colorado Boulder, told CBS Colorado the 88-year-old victim is a Holocaust refugee who fled Europe. Wilhelm described the woman as a "very loving person." Chany Scheiner, a friend of the victim, told KUSA-TV the woman is an 'amazing." "She has spoken at our synagogues as well as other synagogues and schools just about her background and the Holocaust and from her own perspective,' Scheiner said. 'Her life wasn't easy, but she is just a bright light. And anybody who is her friend is a friend for life.' The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the U.S. and around the world over Israel's military campaign in Gaza. The war has dragged on for 20 months, since the Hamas attack on Israeli border communites that killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and saw more than 250 others dragged across the border into Gaza as hostages. The conflict has fueled antisemitic hate crime in the U.S. Reports of incidents of antisemitism rose for a second year in a row in 2024, according to an annual report released by the Anti-Defamation League in April. The controvery also has prompted supporters of Israel, including President Donald Trump, to brand peaceful, pro-Palestinian protests as antisemitic. Who is Mohamed Soliman? FBI raids home of suspect in Colorado terror attack Earlier Sunday, Boulder dispatch received several calls to the county courthouse at around 1:26 p.m. local time, Redfearn said. Initial reports indicated that there was a man with a weapon, and people were being set on fire at the scene. Responding officers encountered multiple victims who were injured with wounds consistent with burns and other injuries, Redfearn said.
