Oscar De La Hoya speaks out as protests over ICE raids continue

"I am sad about what's happening in Los Angeles right now,'' De La Hoya said in a statement provided to USA TODAY Sports on June 11. "Growing up in L.A., I witnessed firsthand how integral immigrants are to the heartbeat of this city -- they are our friends, neighbors, classmates, coworkers, and loved ones. Latinos are among the most hardworking people in the world, and their contributions strengthen every corner of our communities." Though born in Montebello, California, De La Hoya spent his formative years in East Los Angeles, a predominantly Latino community. At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, De La Hoya held an American flag and Mexican flag in the boxing ring after winning a gold medal. "As a proud Mexican-American, I carry immense gratitude for the sacrifices my family made in coming to the U.S. from Mexico in pursuit of a better future,'' De La Hoya, 52, also said in the statement provided to USA TODAY Sports. "Their courage gave me opportunities I'll never take for granted.'' De La Hoya, who won eight world championships in six weight divisions before announcing his retirement in 2009, was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014. He is the founder and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, one of top promotion companies in boxing. Jane Murcia, Director for Golden Boy Promotions, said De La Hoya was not available for interviews.

How Sydney Sweeney Completely Transformed Her Body for a New Role

Sydney Sweeney didn't just learn to throw a jab for her upcoming Christy Martin biopic—she also rebuilt her physique. In a new W Magazine cover story, the 27-year-old recalls signing on to play the famous boxer and immediately embracing a fighter's schedule: 'I loved it. I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kick-boxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.' All that work added over 30 pounds, and change in her wardrobe. 'My body was completely different. I didn't fit in any of my clothes. I'm usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy!' Still, the payoff was worth it: 'I was so strong, like crazy strong.' Director and co-writer David Michôd was equally struck by her commitment. 'Sydney trained her butt off to play the turned up to work every day with her tail wagging, ready to go. No matter how tough it was, she was like a ray of sunshine,' he told the magazine. That transformation, however, vanished almost as quickly as it arrived. Michôd recalled FaceTiming Sweeney seven weeks after wrap, when she was back in the Euphoria makeup trailer: 'I was stunned by the change in her appearance,' Michôd said. 'I had only seen her as an adorable, tough moppet with late-'80s hair, ready to box. Sydney was happiest when she was in the ring punching and being punched. It was shocking to see her being so glamorous.' The intense regimen revived an old passion for the actress. 'My mom told me from a very young age to fall in love with as many things as possible,' Sweeney said, listing skiing, wake-boarding, grappling, and kick-boxing among the sports she took up before acting took over. Production on the still-untitled film has wrapped, and Sweeney is already helping introduce it to fans: On June 8, she rode alongside Martin as grand marshal of the International Boxing Hall of Fame's Parade of Champions in Canastota, New York.

Sydney Sweeney discusses gaining 30 pounds for Christy Martin biopic

Sydney Sweeney was dedicated to embodying pioneering female boxer Christy Martin for an upcoming biopic. The actor shared that she gained more than 30 pounds and spent months training for the role, telling W Magazine, 'My body was completely different.' 'I loved it,' she said. 'I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.' Amid her intense workout routine and weight gain, Sweeney shared that she went up four sizes and 'didn't fit in any of my clothes.' 'I'm usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my God,' she reportedly laughed. 'But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.' To become Martin, the 'Anyone But You' star also had to wear brown contact lenses and a brown wig that was styled as a mullet. What is the biopic about? The untitled biopic is directed by David Michod, who co-wrote the script with Mirrah Foulkes. The story follows Martin's rise to becoming one of the biggest female boxers in the '90s. Martin made her boxing debut in 1989 and married Jim Martin who was also her manager. Jim Martin was 25 years older than Christy Martin and abusive throughout their marriage. In 2010, he stabbed her and shot her in the chest. He's currently serving a 25-year prison sentence. Martin is the only woman boxer to ever appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated, she's the first to sign with famed promoter Don King, the first female inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and she earned the World Boxing female super welterweight title in 2009. She boxed until 2012. Sweeney and Martin recently reunited in New York for the Parade of Champions on June 8. How Did Sydney Sweeney train to play Christy Martin? In October 2024, Sweeney shared photos of her transformation on Instagram, showing off her toned and buff arms. 'Over the past few months, i've been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman,' she wrote, in part, alongside snaps of her in character. The actor later shared footage of her boxing workout routine in the gym following a montage of negative comments about her appearance. Start TODAY trainer Stephanie Mansour previously noted that the moves Sweeney was performing in the quick video are upper body boxing moves which work the shoulders, biceps, back and core. According to her W Magazine interview, Sweeney later had to drop the weight in seven weeks for her next project. While it didn't go into detail about how she shed the pounds, the actor did share that she's always loved sports. 'I love being outside. I was on the ski team, and I wakeboarded. I slalom ski on water. I was on the soccer team and the softball team. And then my parents got me into grappling, which is like wrestling, and kickboxing,' she said. 'I was the only girl at the dojo. I trained there from 13 until about 19. I fought all guys. I liked to think that if s--- went down, I might be able to step up.'

Manny Pacquiao inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, says ‘the best is still to come'

A champion once again, Manny Pacquiao has joined boxing's most legendary figures It was a moment that had been years in the making, fought for in boxing rings, won under the blinding lights of Las Vegas and sealed, at last, in upstate New York. Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has officially joined the ranks of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, enshrined this week alongside other legends of the sport. At 46, Pacquiao becomes the latest (and perhaps most storied) Filipino to receive the honour, joining fellow countrymen Pancho Villa, Gabriel ' Flash ' Elorde and promoter Lope Sarreal in boxing's most exclusive pantheon. For a man who once sold doughnuts on the streets of General Santos, barefoot and hungry, the moment was as much personal as it was national. 'From the streets of General Santos, to the bright lights of Las Vegas, to tonight at the International Boxing Hall of Fame,' Pacquiao wrote in a Facebook post. 'No shoes, no food, no chance, just a dream in my heart.'
