Oscar De La Hoya speaks out as protests over ICE raids continue

"I am sad about what's happening in Los Angeles right now,'' De La Hoya said in a statement provided to USA TODAY Sports on June 11. "Growing up in L.A., I witnessed firsthand how integral immigrants are to the heartbeat of this city -- they are our friends, neighbors, classmates, coworkers, and loved ones. Latinos are among the most hardworking people in the world, and their contributions strengthen every corner of our communities."
Though born in Montebello, California, De La Hoya spent his formative years in East Los Angeles, a predominantly Latino community. At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, De La Hoya held an American flag and Mexican flag in the boxing ring after winning a gold medal.
"As a proud Mexican-American, I carry immense gratitude for the sacrifices my family made in coming to the U.S. from Mexico in pursuit of a better future,'' De La Hoya, 52, also said in the statement provided to USA TODAY Sports. "Their courage gave me opportunities I'll never take for granted.''
De La Hoya, who won eight world championships in six weight divisions before announcing his retirement in 2009, was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014. He is the founder and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, one of top promotion companies in boxing.
Jane Murcia, Director for Golden Boy Promotions, said De La Hoya was not available for interviews.

Tommy Fleetwood denied first PGA Tour win on last hole at Travelers Championship

Tommy Fleetwood suffered a heart-breaking one-shot defeat at the final hole of the Travelers Championship in Connecticut as American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley denied the Englishman a maiden PGA Tour victory. Fleetwood had been defending a three-shot lead following his flawless 63 on Saturday, sitting at 16 under par ahead of Bradley and Russell Henley. However, a couple of early bogeys threatened to derail his bid to end his record of the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without claiming a title. "I'm upset now. I'm angry … it hurts." — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 22, 2025 The 34-year-old, though, steadied himself around the turn to edge back ahead of Bradley with birdies at the 11th and 13th. Having found a path on the right of the 15th before going on to save par, Fleetwood looked to be on course once again – only to drop another shot at the 16th. Fleetwood then came up short of the green with his second shot on the 18th. Spurred on by a partisan home crowd, Bradley promptly sent his follow-up to within a few feet. Fleetwood's birdie attempt fell short just behind Bradley's marker, with the Englishman then missing his par putt, having to settle for a bogey and a two-over final round. THE LOCAL KID. @Keegan_Bradley IS A WINNER IN CONNECTICUT FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THREE YEARS! 🏆🏆 #TravelersChamp — TravelersChamp (@TravelersChamp) June 22, 2025 The American – who could yet qualify as a playing captain at Bethpage Black in September – then nervelessly rolled in a birdie to finish at 15 under, sparking wild celebrations around the 18th green. 'I feel like from where I was, I should at least be in a play-off,' Fleetwood said. 'I didn't really feel like I hit that many bad shots execution-wise, just sort of a couple of bad decisions and didn't clean 'em up, which is pretty poor and things that I have to work on.' Fleetwood added: 'I haven't been in this situation for a while. When it sort of calms down – I am upset now, I am angry – but when it calms down, I will look at the things that I did well and look at the things that I can learn from. 'I did plenty of things well enough this week to win, but I didn't do that and it hurts.' 273-yard 5-iron around a tree 👀 Special shot from Rory McIlroy. 📺 CBS — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 22, 2025 Henley chipped in from the edge of the green on the 18th to secure a tie for second with Fleetwood at 14 under. Harris English and Australian Jason Day finished at 13 under in a tie for fourth. World number one Scottie Scheffler and Masters champion Rory McIlroy both shot five-under-par final rounds to get to 12 under and finish in a share of sixth place. Newly-crowned US Open champion JJ Spaun had the best round of the day, starting off at the 10th, as he carded a seven-under 63 to climb up into the top 15. Viktor Hovland had earlier withdrawn on the third hole of his final round because of a neck injury.

Antonio Rudiger accuses Club World Cup opponent of racism in Real Madrid game

Real Madrid star Antonio Rudiger has accused Gustavo Cabral of racial abuse during his team's Club World Cup victory over Pachuca on Sunday. The alleged incident occurred in stoppage time as Rudiger was seen approaching referee Ramon Abatti after an exchange with his opponent. Cabral, a defender for Mexican club Pachuca, is alleged to have called Rudiger a 'negro de mierda' – a Spanish insult that translates as 'f***ing n*****' – sources inside the stadium have claimed to the Daily Mail. It should be noted that Cabral has disputed the claim, stating he had instead called Rudiger a 'cagon de mierda', meaning 'f***ing coward'. FIFA are set to investigate the alleged incident after the referee activated the anti-discrimination protocol with a crossed-arms gesture. Quizzed if Rudiger had been the victim of racism during the game, Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso told a press conference: 'Toni told us something, we support Toni and we will see what happens. 'I think the FIFA protocol has been activated to investigate, but if it has happened, all measures should be taken and we support Antonio because it's something unacceptable. 'In football there is no tolerance for this, and if it happened, then measures should be taken. This is what Antonio has told us and we believe him. It's being investigated now.' Pachuca head coach Jaime Lozano was also asked about the incident – but said he was unaware of what had happened. 'I just found out from you, you are letting me know, we did not talk about it in the dressing room,' he said. 'I haven't spoken to Cabral about this, I cannot give you an explanation about it because this is the first [I have heard of] this news. More Trending 'It cannot be justified at all but I will talk to him, I've known him for a little while and and I have never heard of something like that with Pachuca players.' Real Madrid won the match 3-1 despite being reduced to 10 men after just seven minutes, with Raúl Asencio shown an early red card. Goals from Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler and Federico Valverde put the Spanish side in control before Elías Montiel scored for the Mexican side with 10 minutes to go. Real Madrid are back in Club World Cup action on Friday when they face fellow European side Red Bull Salzburg in Group H. Rare Olympics 50p coin sells for 21 times its face value on eBay – have you checked your change?

A RARE 50p coin featuring the offside rule from the London 2012 Olympics has sold for over 21 times its face value in a recent eBay auction. The coin, part of a special set created to celebrate the Games, went for £10.51 after a bidding war. 5 5 The listing came from a seller in Manchester, near Bolton, who described the piece as 'rare'. The coin received 13 bids before finally being sold. Its design shows a football pitch with a diagram explaining the offside rule, which helped it catch the attention of collectors and football fans alike. The designer said: 'I'm a football fan, I've followed the Premier League since its inception and if I had fifty pence for every time someone asks what the offside rule is then I would be a rich man.' A spokesperson from the Royal Mint added: 'In advance of the London 2012 Olympics, the Royal Mint held a coin design competition to produce a series of 50 pence pieces on an Olympic sports theme. "The "competition, which was open to the general public, resulted in 29 pieces and introduced the youngest ever designer of United Kingdom coinage at just nine years old.' This isn't the first time a 50p coin has fetched far more than its original value. In a similar case, a Kew Gardens 50p – one of the rarest in circulation – sold for over £150 on eBay. Only 210,000 of these coins were minted back in 2009, making them a top target for collectors. Another Olympic 50p, this time featuring the wrestling design, went for £19 in a recent auction, nearly 40 times its face value. The Triathlon version has also proved popular, with examples regularly changing hands online for more than £15. Back in 2023, the Atlantic Salmon 50p created for the UK's Wildlife series was also spotted selling online for more than £12, despite being released only recently. With just 200,000 in circulation, it has quickly become one of the most desirable new coins. A Peter Rabbit 50p from the Beatrix Potter series sold for £11 after a flurry of bids. Its companion coin, Flopsy Bunny, also reached similar figures, both thanks to their relatively low mintage and nostalgic appeal. Some sellers have even managed to get lucky with error coins. One Royal Mint coin featuring a printing mistake – a misaligned image – was bought for £50, despite being a standard 50p coin in shape and size. These cases prove that it's worth checking your change. 5 5
