Clip of mining fire is from Colombia, not Indonesia
"On Sunday, June 8, 2025, at around 12:00 Papua Time, indigenous people in Raja Ampat Regency burned down an excavator owned by a nickel mining company operating in their customary territory," reads an Indonesian-language Facebook post on June 8, 2025. It includes footage of a helicopter flying over an open area in the middle of the forest where several excavators are on fire. "This action was a form of community anger and rejection of the presence of the extractive industry, which is damaging the environment, threatening living space, and ignoring the rights of indigenous peoples." Similar posts also spread elsewhere on Facebook and on TikTok after Greenpeace Indonesia published videos showing environmental damage to three islands because of nickel mining projects (archived link). The NGO's campaign led to growing calls by politicians and celebrities for mining licences to be withdrawn. The government subsequently revoked permits for four of five companies operating in the cluster of islands in the Coral Triangle, a popular diving spot considered one of the world's most pristine reefs. But there have been no official reports about the alleged protest mentioned in the posts. "As of today, there is no burning incident in the mining site," Anis Dj, spokesperson of the police force in Southwest Papua Province that oversees Raja Ampat, told AFP on June 12. A reverse image search on Google using keyframes found the video posted on Instagram on June 5, 2025. The caption says it was filmed in Colombia (archived link). Further keyword searches found a similar clip showing the same landscape and burning equipment was earlier uploaded to Facebook by Colombian media outlet Región Al Día on May 25, 2025 (archived link). It says the video depicts the operation to close an illegal mining site in the rural area of Antioquia in Zaragoza, Colombia. A further search found an article published by the official site of the Colombian police that featured a corresponding picture (archived link). The operation was done by the Colombian National Police and the Aerospace Force to counter "illegal exploitation of minerals in the rural area of the municipality of Zaragoza in the department of Antioquia".

Video shows Indonesian investigators searching former ministry staff's flats, not residence of ex-minister
"Arrogant toward teachers, former Ministry of Education and Culture official now a fugitive in a corruption case," reads an Indonesian-language SnackVideo post shared on May 28, 2025. The video, which shows investigators entering and searching through a flat, is overlaid with text that says Nadiem is "suspected of being involved in corruption related to a laptop procurement worth nearly 10 trillion Indonesian rupiah (US$614 million)". "The Attorney General's Office, escorted by the military, searched Nadiem's apartment and found several pieces of evidence," it adds, before concluding that the former minister is being "pursued" by the Attorney General's Office and his whereabouts are unknown. Image Screenshot of the false SnackVideo post, captured on June 11, 2025 The video surfaced after the AGO opened a corruption investigation into the ministry of education and culture's procurement of Chromebook laptops worth 10 trillion rupiah between , which were meant to support the digitalisation of public schools. from 2019 until 2024 (archived link). AGO spokesman Harli Siregar said there are "strong indications of a conspiracy in the procurement process", with tests showing the laptops were ineffective in areas lacking reliable internet access, according to a report in the Jakarta Globe (archived link). "Roughly 1,000 Chromebooks had previously been tested and showed poor performance, yet the procurement went ahead," he said. Similar posts claiming the video showed authorities searching Nadiem's flat were also shared elsewhere on SnackVideo as well as on Facebook. "Arrest them and throw them in jail along with the ones who appointed them -- for 55 years," read a comment on one of the posts. Another said: "Seize their assets, make them poor, and lock them up. Cut off the hands of corrupt officials as a deterrent if necessary. Enough is enough!" But as of June 12, the AGO has not conducted a search of Nadiem's flat. Flats of former staff "We never stated that Nadiem Makarim's apartment was searched, let alone that he has been listed as a fugitive," AGO on June 10. He added the agency had searched three residences belonging to the minister's former staff, and those individuals had been banned from travelling. Nadiem's legal counsel, Muhamad Ali Nurdin, separately stated at a press conference on June 10 that no search had been conducted of his client's residence (archived link). "The search never happened," he said. A keyword search on Google led to some of the used in the false posts in a YouTube video published on May 29 by local broadcaster MetroTV (archived link). The video is titled, "Attorney General's Office Searches 2 Apartments of Former Minister of Education and Culture's Staff." Overlaid text on the MetroTV video reads, "Attorney General's Office searches 2 apartments belonging to staff members of the former Minister of Education and Culture". Nowhere in the video does it say the flats belonged to Nadiem. Old Indonesian landslide clip misrepresented as deadly mining disaster
"Rockfall in Mount Kuda. The information is 8 dead, 12 injured, and 10 still missing. May the deceased get the best place in the sight of God," reads the Indonesian-language caption to an Instagram video shared on May 31, 2025. The video shows a rocky cliff collapsing while several people in the foreground run away. Image Screenshot of the false Instagram post, captured on June 8, 2025 The video circulated after a landslide at a limestone mine in Mount Kuda in Cirebon on May 30 that local media outlet reported killed 21 people and left four missing (archived link). The company overseeing the mine was operating legally, but safety standards were lacking, according to West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, who said he had ordered its closure (archived link). Similar posts purportedly showing the landslide were also shared on , TikTok and X. The video, however, does not show the May 30 landslide. A combination of reverse image searches using keyframes from the falsely shared video and keyword searches on Google led to the same footage published on June 20, 2023 by an Instagram account that shares information about West Java (archived link). "These are the seconds before rockfall occurred in Mount Kuda, Bobos Village, Dukupuntang District, Cirebon Regency, on Monday (June 19, 2023). There were no fatalities in this incident," reads its Indonesian-language caption. According to local media platform Kumparan, the landslide was caused by heavy rainfall and an undercutting mining method (archived link). No fatalities were recorded. False subtitles misrepresent Kim Jong Un speech as support for West Java governor
"Kim Jong-un speaks about West Javan Governor Dedi Mulyadi, he respects him so much," reads Indonesian-language text superimposed on a TikTok video posted on May 6, 2025. The video features photos of Dedi Mulyadi and North Korea's Kim Jong Un above a clip of Kim speaking. Subtitles on the clip, purportedly translating what Kim was saying, read: "Corruption has slowed Indonesia's development. This culture must be changed, beginning with its young generation. I fully support West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi's policy to educate Indonesian students and teenagers so they become obedient and disciplined." The text refers to a programme where students labelled "naughty" are sent to military barracks for 14 days of character education (archived link). According to a BBC Indonesia report about the programme, some psychologists and education experts have questioned its efficacy and whether it may have a detrimental impact on the teens' development. A foreign country praises him, so why do his own people in the country mock him?" reads a comment on one of the posts. Another said: "Thank you to his excellency Mr Kim Jong-un for supporting Dedi Mulyadi." The video, however, does not show Kim praising Dedi or the education programme. AFP previously debunked another claim using the same video with different subtitles to make it appear as if Kim were commenting on a local corruption case. A reverse image search on Google led to the same footage uploaded to YouTube by the North Korea Now news outlet on February 13, 2024 (archived link). The YouTube video is titled, " ". "Our military must possess even stronger power, prevent war and unconditionally safeguard peace with its irresistible force. Peace is not something to beg for or negotiate," says Kim. "Let us remember once again that war is not advertised in advance. We must always maintain a state of readiness." He makes no mention of the Indonesian governor or his education policy. A transcript of Kim's speech was also included in a report in the newspaper of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party, Rodong Sinmun, on February 9, 2024 (archived link). The transcript also shows Kim did not mention Dedi.

New 'Final Destination' film sparks misrepresented visuals
"Anyone knows this news? The ceiling of a movie theatre in the Philippines collapsed during the screening of the Final Destination 6 movie. That's really the ultimate experience," says an Indonesian-language Facebook post on May 26, 2025. It includes a two-minute clip of a crowd in distress as water starts to leak from a cinema's ceiling, with some parts starting to fall off. A similar post written in Burmese surfaced on the same day with an image showing the damaged interior of a movie house. "The ceiling collapsed while screening Final Destination," the caption reads. "Final Destination: Bloodlines", the latest instalment in the horror franchise, topped the North American box office following its release in mid-May (archived link). Similar claims about a theatre collapsing during the film's screening also surfaced on X, Instagram and TikTok and were shared in other languages, including Hindi, English, and Tagalog. While such an incident was reported in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires in May, the circulating visuals are unrelated (archived link). A reverse image search using keyframes found multiple news reports shared the clip in June 2015, including from ABC7 News (archived link). "Six people were reported hurt Monday night in Cebu, Philippines when parts of the ceiling of an Ayala Center Cebu cinema room collapsed after intense water leakage," part of the report reads, referring to a city in central Philippines. It goes to say that 350 people were in the room for a brand relaunch event. A similar clip of the event taken from another angle has appeared in reports from Philippine media organisations Sunstar and Rappler (archived here and here). Another reverse search of the photo showing the destroyed theatre found it in an NBC News article published February 28, 2025 -- months before the release of "Final Destination: Bloodlines" (archived link). "Movie theater ceiling collapses during screening of 'Captain America: Brave New World'," reads the report's headline. "The historic Liberty Theater in Wenatchee, Wash. Two people were in the theater during the incident, but no injuries were reported," says the caption to the picture. The photo is credited to Wenatchee Valley Fire Department, which uploaded an Instagram post about the same event on February 26, 2025 (archived here and here). "At approximately 8 PM, Wenatchee Valley firefighters responded to a reported ceiling collapse at Liberty Cinema. Two people were inside the theater at the time, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation," the post states.
