Denmark to push for Ukraine's EU membership during presidency

Denmark will continue preparing Ukraine for EU membership in the face of Hungary blocking negotiations, when the Nordic country takes over the presidency of the European Council from July 1, its European affairs minister said on Thursday. "Unfortunately, Hungary is blocking and we are trying to put as much pressure there as we can and also do everything we can to make Ukraine continue with the necessary reform work," European affairs minister Marie Bjerre told a press conference in Copenhagen. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has strongly opposed providing NATO military and EU aid to Ukraine, saying the country's EU membership would destroy Hungarian farmers and the wider economy. Ukraine had already initiated the necessary reforms and is ready to speed up the negotiations. "When we get to the point where we can actually open the specific negotiation chapters, we can be ready to close them very quickly," Bjerre said. Denmark will also seek to reach agreement among EU nations on the bloc's planned 2040 climate goals. The European Commission plans to propose in July a legally binding target to cut EU countries' emissions by 90% by 2040, from 1990 levels. Faced with pushback from governments, however, Brussels is assessing options including setting a lower target for domestic industries, and using international carbon credits to make up the gap to 90%. © Thomson Reuters 2025.

Mehul Choksi sues India in UK high court for ‘kidnapping him' in Antigua

Mehul Choksi LONDON: Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi is suing the Indian govt and five other people in the London high court for orchestrating what he refers to as his 'kidnapping' from Antigua in 2021 in an alleged honeytrap plot. Choksi has claimed in the preliminary hearing that five people working for R&AW kidnapped him in Antigua and smuggled him on a yacht to Dominica in a plot masterminded by the Indian state in order to extradite him to India to face charges in the Rs 13,500 Punjab National Bank scam. Antigua police named Gurdip Bath, Barbara Jarabik, Gurmit Singh, Gurjit Singh Bhandal and Leslie Farrow-Guy as the five suspects, mostly UK-based, in the kidnapping. They are all being sued by Choksi alongside the Indian govt. They all deny the charges. The court documents were served on the ministry of external affairs by the British high commission in New Delhi. Edward Fitzgerald KC, representing Choksi (66), told Justice Freedman on Monday that Choksi was filing a civil suit against the Indian govt for allegedly ordering Choksi to be kidnapped on May 21, 2021 and smuggled by yacht to Dominica. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? IC Markets Mendaftar Undo India denies any involvement, argues it is protected by state immunity and that the UK courts do not have jurisdiction for this case. Harish Salve KC, representing India's govt, said: 'There is no evidence of India having anything to do with the alleged events. The claimant's account is rife with non sequiturs and unsupported assumptions. Those accused seem a rather unlikely band of state-sponsored conspirators.' Choksi is currently in jail in Belgium where he is fighting extradition proceedings brought by India. Choksi first met Barbara Jarabik, a Hungarian luxury goods expert, in Antigua in Aug 2020. In May 2021 she is alleged to have asked him to visit the apartment she had rented in Jolly Harbour. A group of men of Indian origin burst into the apartment and told Choksi he was 'being detained to be interrogated by Indian agencies', Fitzgerald told the court, London's Times newspaper reported. Choksi alleges that the men told him they worked for R&AW and beat him up, left him unconscious, and tied him to a wheelchair on the yacht to Dominica to extort a false confession from him and implicate the Congress party. 'The evidence points inevitably to India being behind this — they had the motivation, they had the resources,' Fitzgerald told the court, the Daily Telegraph reported. Choksi denies the charges against him. Thenext hearing is expected in September.

Liverpool set price as Erik ten Hag eyes Liverpool swoop to replace Bayern star

Liverpool are braced for a bid for Jarell Quansah after Bayer Leverkusen made their interest in the Reds defender clear. But the Merseysiders will want around £40m to part with the defender. The two clubs have been locked in talks for weeks over a record £116m deal for Germany star Florian Wirtz, who will undergo his medical on Merseyside on Friday. Any deal for Quansah would be separate to that and talks will continue after the Wirtz deal is finalised rather than hold up that transfer. Liverpool would be reluctant sellers of Quansah, 22, who is currently with England's U21s at the European Championships. They have been monitoring Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who they could move for if Quansah was to leave. Guehi is out of contract at Selhurst Park next summer but is also of interest to Newcastle. Quansah signed a new contract last season and is very much admired among the Reds staff but he also wants to play more after falling down the pecking order at Anfield. Leverkusen are looking to replace Jonathan Tah, who left to join Bayern Munich and new boss Erik ten Hag is a fan of Quansah. The Bundesliga club would hope to negotiate a lower fee than £40m and would hope their dealings with the Reds may help talks. Liverpool have Virgil van Dijk, who signed a two-year deal, and Ibrahima Konate, who is entering the last 12 months of his contract, as centre-back options with Joe Gomez's future also in doubt. That would mean should Quansah move then Liverpool are likely to bring in a centre-back with Guehi a player of interest. Any more incoming transfers are likely to be put on pause this summer for the time being following a lucrative window. Jeremie Frimpong arrived from Leverkusen for a fee of £35m, while Wirtz' own arrival will see Liverpool smash their transfer record. Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez also appears to be on the verge of becoming a Liverpool player according to his dad and agent Sebastijan. Speaking on Super Indirektno, he said: 'It's only Liverpool for us and we're not going anywhere else and we won't talk to other clubs. Everything is done between us (personal terms) we just need to sort out some details but it's basically a done deal." Should Liverpool sell Jarell Quansah this summer? Share your thoughts in the comments below Liverpool are expected to pay around £45m for the Hungarian. Meanwhile, Quansah is not the only star to have been linked with an exit this summer. Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa and Andrew Robertson are all potentially candidates to leave over the coming months. Green Party leader to attend Pride parade in Budapest despite ban

Green Party leader Roderic O'Gorman has said that he will travel to Hungary to attend the Budapest pride parade on 28 June after Hungarian police said they are banning the parade. The march, which would be the city's 30th pride parade festival, is organised in support of the LGBTQI+ community, and had been planned for 28 June. "The police, acting within their authority over public assemblies, prohibit the holding of the assembly at the aforementioned location and time," the police said in a statement published on their website. They added that the decision could be appealed within three days at the country's supreme court. However, Budapest's liberal mayor Gergely Karacsony vowed to hold the march, despite the police ban. "Given that the municipality did not make its announcement within the framework of the law on gatherings, this interdiction has no value," he wrote on his Facebook page. He added: "Budapest city hall will organise the Budapest pride march on June 28 as a city event. Period." Speaking this afternoon, Mr O'Gorman said that the police move is the "most egregious attack" on the LGBTQI+ community seen in decades. "This is a very explicit erosion of the rights of the LGBTI+ community in Hungary. "It's an absolute attempt to silence them by their government. It's a clear breach of human rights. "And that's why it's important that elected reps from all over Europe rally around Hungarians, rally around people in Hungary who see this for what it is and support them at the Budapest parade this year," said Mr O'Gorman. Hungary's parliament, in which Prime Minister Viktor Orban's right-wing Fidesz Party has a big majority, passed legislation in March that created a legal basis for police to ban LGBTQI+ marches, citing the protection of children. Mr Orban's government has a Christian conservative agenda and has been fielding an intensifying campaign against the LGBTQI+ community. It also pushed through constitutional changes in April stipulating that Hungary recognises only two sexes, male and female. Mr Orban previously said that organisers "should not even bother" organising pride in Budapest this year. Mr O'Gorman that the Hungarian government of Mr Orban "has been scapegoating the LGBTI+ community now for many years, and what they've done now is one further escalation".

Journalist: Liverpool Have Agreed £40m Fee to Sign Milos Kerkez ‘Imminently'

Liverpool Closing in on £40m Deal to Sign Milos Kerkez from AFC Bournemouth Liverpool's recruitment strategy under Arne Slot continues to impress, and the imminent £40 million signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth might just be their sharpest move yet. Described by many as a rough diamond, Kerkez embodies the modern full-back, one capable of blending defensive tenacity with rapid transitions into attack. He is, as Lewis Steele of The Daily Mail describes, a 'free-flowing full back' and 'an all-round good guy' — but make no mistake, this is a player of serious footballing steel. Advertisement His standout moment last season came against Spurs, when he surged 70 yards to assist Marcus Tavernier. It was vintage full-back play — reminiscent of peak Andy Robertson — and an early preview of what the Anfield faithful can expect. Kerkez's contribution for Bournemouth was impressive across the board: 2 goals and 6 assists, starting all 38 Premier League games. As Alexander Smith from the Bournemouth Echo put it: 'He was among the Cherries' most consistent performers this season.' Photo: IMAGO From Poole to Premier Class Born in Serbia, raised in Hungary, and developed in Austria, the Netherlands and England, Kerkez has gathered experience and maturity far beyond his 21 years. Liverpool fans can thank Richard Hughes for keeping ties strong with his former club, Bournemouth, where a £45 million fee has been negotiated down slightly. Advertisement Slot and his team have identified a player with not just ability but character. Adam Bogdan, former Liverpool keeper and a fellow Hungarian, noted: 'He has had two very good seasons in the Premier League… He is absolutely top class.' This is not just about physical attributes or technical flair. 'He is so eager and self-assured… His focus is purely on football and family.' That commitment is echoed throughout his journey. Whether it was catching the eye of Paolo Maldini at Gyor, dazzling at AZ Alkmaar where he earned a Golden Boy nomination, or dominating at Bournemouth — Kerkez has never stopped evolving. Brian Wijker, an AZ journalist, summed it up simply: 'Milos is out-of-this-world good.' Humble Heart, Ruthless Talent Despite his blossoming profile, Kerkez remains grounded. He lives with his parents in Poole and values simple pleasures, famously stating: 'I would rather go home for my vacation… than travel to Ibiza.' His humility is matched by a readiness to make his mark at Liverpool. As Bogdan explained, 'He is not the sort to come into a building and be quiet… He will settle in straight away.' Advertisement Yet, for all his laid-back charm, Kerkez's fierce competitiveness comes through clearly. 'At his local team in Hungary… he was like a 'young horse', kicking everybody but with sheer commitment,' one coach recalled. That same energy and attitude are what Liverpool will be banking on as he competes with and learns from the legendary Andy Robertson. Photo: IMAGO Slot's Vision Coming to Life With Jeremie Frimpong already signed and Florian Wirtz on the verge of joining, Kerkez represents a key piece of Slot's evolving tactical puzzle. These aren't just talented individuals, they are versatile, intelligent players ready to thrive under a dynamic, aggressive system. Advertisement Kerkez's defensive maturity, attacking instincts, and evident mental strength make him tailor-made for life under Slot. His friendship with new Manchester City man Tijani Reijnders, forged at AZ, hints at a player comfortable in elite circles. Now, he has the platform and pressure to match his ambition. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis Liverpool fans have every right to be buzzing. Kerkez feels like the type of signing that turns a great team into a dominant one. At 21, he has the legs, lungs, and the mentality to own that left flank for the next decade. While Andy Robertson remains an elite figure, having someone of Kerkez's calibre push him — or eventually replace him — is the type of planning that wins you not just titles, but eras. What really hits home is his story. Kerkez isn't some academy golden boy handed every opportunity. He's fought, failed, adjusted, and come back better each time. Milan didn't work out? No drama. He went to AZ Alkmaar and tore it up. Bournemouth weren't the biggest stage? He used it as a platform. Advertisement You want character? He's got it. You want energy? Watch that 70-yard dash again. You want quality? He was nominated for PFA Young Player of the Year for a reason. With Frimpong on one side and Kerkez on the other, Slot could be building one of the most athletic, attacking full-back duos in world football. If Wirtz walks through the door next week as expected, Liverpool fans can dare to dream again — of domination, not just success. Kerkez might be called a 'young horse', but Liverpool's thoroughbred revolution is in full gallop.
