'Biden is like a granddaddy': Rep. Jasmine Crockett says his mental acuity is much sharper than Trump's; calls it '1000x better'
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, defended former President Joe Biden 's mental sharpness, saying it is "1000 times better than what we currently have" and calling him a "grand daddy," as the House Oversight Committee investigates claims of a cover-up regarding his mental health. In a conversation on Katie Couric 's Next Question podcast that dropped on Thursday , Crockett strongly defended Biden's mental sharpness, arguing it is "supreme" compared to Trump. "Even if we want to say — which I refuse to accept — that Joe Biden was mentally deficient, let me tell you something. His mental deficiency is still a thousand times better than what we currently have," she argued. "I just wish that, ultimately, this country would judge each of our leaders with the same measuring stick." She said she had "never seen anything" in Biden that made her question his mental competence, and instead described him affectionately as a 'granddaddy' figure — someone who might have slowed down with age, but whose mind and values remained intact. "I never saw anything in Joe Biden that made me wonder whatsoever, and it's not that I was with Joe Biden every single day, that's for sure. But as I talked about my grandparents — the way that I would describe Joe is like, I mean, he's a granddaddy, right?" she told Couric. Crockett emphasised that, unlike Trump, Biden understands America's global alliances and avoided unnecessary trade wars. "Even if you're saying that there was a mentally deficient Joe Biden, I know that he absolutely had a mental acuity that is supreme when it comes to comparing him to Donald Trump , because at least he kept good people around him," Crockett said. "He kept people that would keep us safe in this country." She said that Biden reminds her of her grandmother, someone who may have slowed down with age but remained mentally sharp. "He reminds me of my grandmother," Crockett said. "Her attitude about certain things — like whether or not she was looking to be as polished, or cared to be polished, or even if she moved as fast — it just wasn't there. We all slow down. But I will tell you that I will take a broken — or however they want to describe Joe Biden — over Donald Trump any given day, because, number one, I know Joe Biden's heart," she added. She contrasted Biden's leadership style with Trump's, stating that Biden 'keeps good people around him' and focuses on policy for the 'good of the American people,' not for himself or 'his rich friends.' House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) is launching an investigation into California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D) over their handling of demonstrations that broke out in the city this week over President Trump's immigration policies. 'Claims were made that state and local law enforcement had protests under control, however, police were clearly unable to quell the violence in Los Angeles prior to the arrival of the National Guardsmen,' Comer and Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.), who chairs the Subcommittee on Federal Law Enforcement, wrote in letters to the two California Democrats. 'You have championed California's sanctuary policies, which prevent local law enforcement's cooperation with federal immigration authorities,' the lawmakers wrote. 'You have also made it clear that you intend to block the objectives of the federal government, and defend aliens, regardless of their immigration status, criminal activity, anti-American views, or incitement to riot.' The two House Republicans requested that Newsom and Bass hand over all documents and communications related to the demonstrations between their two offices, state law enforcement, local law enforcement, and federal entities by June 27. The committee also requested 'all records and communications including video and dispatch logs, regarding the source of weapons (including rocks and cinderblocks) used by rioters.' House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., and Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., who chairs the subcommittee on law enforcement, sent letters to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday. "The rioters in Los Angeles have committed vicious acts of violence and fearmongering directed at law enforcement and others. They set fire to vehicles and property around the city, and assaulted officers with deadly weapons such as rocks and Molotov cocktails," Comer wrote to the DOJ. "Assaults on law enforcement officers legally executing their orders are reprehensible and those responsible must be dealt with in accordance with the severity of their actions." Democrats have accused Trump of needlessly escalating the situation, while the president's GOP allies argued it was a necessary step to quell the violence. Comer said law enforcement "were forced to fire pepper spray to disperse crowds and made dozens of arrests," blaming the escalation on the rioters. A federal judge ruled Thursday that Trump must return control of the California National Guard to Newsom, but an appeals court quickly reversed that decision. Almost 2 million 23andMe users have asked the company to delete their data in the last 2 months
23andMe's database is shrinking as customers request to delete their data. Interim CEO Joseph Selsavage said 1.9 million customers have asked for data deletions. 23andMe said its business could be "adversely affected" if the trend continues. The hits just keep on coming for 23andMe. Although the embattled genetic testing giant has found a new owner, pending court and regulatory approval, nearly 2 million customers have asked to delete their data from its database since it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and put the company up for sale in March. Interim CEO Joe Selsavage revealed the number of deletion requests on Tuesday during a House Oversight Committee hearing. He attended the hearing with Anne Wojcicki, 23andMe's cofounder and former CEO. "Since we announced bankruptcy, we've had 1.9 million customers call and request that we delete their data, and we have done so within a reasonable timeframe," Selsavage said, adding that's about 15% of its user base. 23andMe's bankruptcy announcement came after a tumultuous 2024 that was marred by a $30 million class action settlement, layoffs, and the resignation of its entire board of independent directors, among other issues. In May, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals said it intended to acquire 23andMe for $256 million, but the sale has received pushback from lawmakers. Attorneys general from over half of the states in the US and the District of Columbia sued 23andMe on Monday to block it from selling genetic data without customer consent. 23andMe's annual report, published Wednesday, also addressed customers' requests to delete data. As of May 31, the company said its user base had dwindled to about 14 million personal genome service customers. "We have experienced and expect to continue to experience significant declines in PGS revenues in the near-term as a result of the Chapter 11 Cases, the Cyber Incident, negative media coverage, the pending Transaction, and other general market and economic trends," the company said in its annual report. The company added that customer fluctuation could impact the size of its database. "If the number of our customers consenting to participate in our research programs declines or fails to grow, our research services revenue may be adversely affected, and our database may become less effective in facilitating our ability to create new features, products, and services to offer to our customers," the company said.
