Bengals' Orlando Brown throws out his take on Steelers' T.J. Watt
The Cincinnati Bengals aren't the only AFC North team embroiled in a major contract standoff with a star pass-rusher right now. Granted, nothing around the league seems as public and messy as Cincinnati's standstill with Hendrickson, unless one counts the contract standoff with Shemar Stewart, too. But the Pittsburgh Steelers are another team going through the same thing with edge rusher T.J. Watt. Ask Bengals offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr., Watt is one of those guys right up there with Hendrickson. 'I gotta put my man T.J. Watt in here,' Brown said on ESPN's NFL Live. 'As everybody knows with T.J., man, he's impossible to keep off the stat-sheet,' Brown said. 'I mean, there's been times I've played him, I thought I did a good job in pass-protection. And he's got two tackles for a loss on me, man.' RELATED: Bengals, Shemar Stewart nuclear option includes 2026 NFL draft route Brown also used the platform to talk about Hendrickson's contract saga and its impact on the locker room. Regardless, Brown is right that Watt deserves to be right up there with the best names in the NFL, hence the contract saga there, too. Hendrickson slotting right up there numbers-wise and overall, too, explains why the Bengals would like his contract situation resolved sooner rather than later, too. Bengals crushed by earned reputation with major contract standoffs
Bengals crushed by earned reputation with major contract standoffs The Cincinnati Bengals have modernized in a few ways, which many fans recognize. Joe Burrow's arrival has accomplished that. But the old-school reputation the Bengals very well earned over the course of decades is something currently being leveraged in a very public fashion during contract standoffs with first-round pick Shemar Stewart and All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson. So says Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated: 'Is Hendrickson taking advantage of the leverage created by Burrow's words and the spot the Bengals are in? He'd be smart to do that. Is Stewart piggybacking on the Hendrickson situation to get favorable contract terms? It wouldn't be the dumbest thing to do—though, as a rookie, it'll be vital that he's ready to go. Also important? That the Bengals, after their healthiest offseason in a few years, are ready to roll when they report to camp.' RELATED: Bengals, Shemar Stewart nuclear option includes 2026 NFL draft route Breer notes that, beyond the really obvious stuff from over the last few years, the Bengals left their comfort zone on the Ja'Marr Chase deal and made some scouting department shuffles after losing Christian Sarkisian. But the Bengals will continue to lose the battle of public perception for the foreseeable future. Their history overshadows the fact that Hendrickson signed a short contract extension recently, is 30 years old, was granted permission to seek a trade and has walked back previous holdout threats. Cincinnati's history also, ironically enough, overshadows the fact that attempting to revise contract leverage, starting with Stewart, is another attempt at modernizing, considering some reporting says the language they want to insert is pretty standard for other teams. All of these are self-inflicted wounds. Some would call them growing pains for an organization trying to modernize. There will continue to be a lag between the team's more modern actions of late and actual public perception. Right now, players negotiating with the team are smart and within their rights to keep leaning into that leverage when possible. All-In Steelers Could Add Another Defensive Star
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are all-in this season. After signing Aaron Rodgers, adding DK Metcalf through a trade and making sure they kept their veteran in tact while adding some younger pieces, the team clearly has a plan to make a Super Bowl run - and they could add another piece before the season starts. Across state lines in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Bengals are working out a contract extension with Defensive Player of the Year finalist Trey Hendrickson, but things don't seem to be going well. Like the Steelers negotiations with T.J. Watt, the Bengals don't have their star on the practice field, and unless a deal gets done, he's made it known he's not going to show up. This isn't the first year the Bengals and Hendrickson have battled in the offseason. The ongoing negotiations appear to be a yearly thing, with this being at least the third time the two sides have gone public with disputes. Well, what if the Steelers got involved? Back in the middle of the season, it was floated to Steelers On SI that Hendrickson would fit perfectly in Pittsburgh, and that the Steelers have a ton of respect for the Bengals edge rusher. In recent weeks, as the talks between Hendrickson and Cincinnati have seemingly gone south once again, a league source has called the thought of Pittsburgh making a move a "no brainer." "He makes complete sense for the way the Steelers operate and imagine for a franchise that had a superstar defensive lineman forever, you now add a Trey Hendrickson who's barely into his prime that'll be there forever," a league executive told Steelers On SI. "There is no secret that Trey greatly admires Mike Tomlin. Who doesn't. If Mike Tomlin were available as a free agent, every team but the Cincinnati Bengals would've wanted him and yet again, they let another star like Carson Palmer get to the breaking point. Hendrickson to the Steelers makes complete sense." The Steelers need to figure out Watt's deal. The move would open up money, though, and they have other options to expand their available cap space. If they believe adding to the defense is the right move, Hendrickson seems like the biggest one they can make. Cincinnati is either going to sign Hendrickson to an extension or trade him. At least that seems like the only two options. And if they do reach their breaking point and decide to move on, maybe the Steelers get aggressive enough to say we really are all in this season. And maybe they call their AFC North rivals. Make sure to bookmark Steelers On SI to get all your daily Pittsburgh Steelers news, interviews, breakdowns and more! Patriots named as trade fit for disgruntled All-Pro pass rusher
Patriots named as trade fit for disgruntled All-Pro pass rusher Could the New England Patriots be in the market for a star pass-rusher? NFL Network's Kevin Patra listed the Patriots as a team he wants to see trade for Cincinnati Bengals' All-Pro pass rusher Trey Hendrickson. There can never be too many pass rushers along a defensive front, and the Patriots have the need and assets to make a deal with the Bengals happen. Hendrickson, a four-time Pro Bowler, has been one of the best pass rushers in the league. He has registered back-to-back years with at least 17.5 sacks. That kind of upgrade would go a long way for a Patriots team that ranked in the bottom of the league in sack percentage last season. Patra wrote: "The Bengals are unlikely to be interested in moving Hendrickson, as that's not how they roll. However, if there is a divorce, New England is a good new partner. Mike Vrabel could use a legit No. 1 edge to anchor his defense, and the Pats still have cap space. Sure, they've shelled out a lot on D already this offseason, but they should continue to take big swings while Drake Maye is still on a rookie deal. Adding Hendrickson would get them a big stride closer to threatening the Bills' divisional dominance." In addition to the 17.5 sacks, Hendrickson recorded six pass deflections, two fumble recoveries and 36 quarterback hits last season. Hendrickson is playing on the final year of his contract, and he is currently seeking a new deal from the Bengals. Talks between the two sides broke down for a while, but those negotiations have picked back up with the hopes that they'll finally reach a resolution. There are no guarantees that a deal will get done, and if it doesn't, one has to wonder if the Patriots would show interest. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Insider Has Important Update on Potential Eagles Trade Target
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Several notable NFL players are holding out in hopes for a new contract this summer. Fortunately for the Philadelphia Eagles, they seem all good on that front. Still, looking across the league, the Eagles might be keeping their eyes on some sticky situations elsewhere. Recently, there have been some suggestions for Howie Roseman to pounce on an opportunity in Ohio, as the Cincinnati Bengals deal with a holdout situation involving the dominant pass-rusher, Trey Hendrickson. Last week, Hendrickson was one of a handful of star players to miss mandatory minicamp. He wants a new deal, and that's clear. Before camp, Hendrickson and the Bengals were reportedly paused on extension discussions. Trey Hendrickson #91 of the Cincinnati Bengals celebrates in the fourth quarter against the Cleveland Browns at Paycor Stadium on December 22, 2024. Trey Hendrickson #91 of the Cincinnati Bengals celebrates in the fourth quarter against the Cleveland Browns at Paycor Stadium on December 22, Sunday, ESPN reported that the two parties are working to get back on the same page. "The two sides have resumed communication on his contract and future with the team, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Sunday," ESPN reported on Sunday. "...This is a positive turn in what has been a fierce stalemate. Hendrickson did not participate in any of the team's offseason workouts, including last week's mandatory minicamp. By missing the three-day session, Hendrickson was subject to fines of nearly $105,000." Carrying four Pro Bowl nods and a First-Team All-Pro acknowledgement, Hendrickson is at the top of his game as a defensive end in the NFL right now. More Eagles News: Eagles Targeted By Disgruntled Ex-Player's Massive Statement While the Bengals could certainly use his services, there are a handful of teams out there who probably wouldn't mind taking him off Cleveland's hands, depending on the cost to acquire the extension-needy star. The Eagles would certainly benefit from an addition like Hendrickson, especially considering the losses they've suffered since winning the Super Bowl. Multiple defensive linemen left in free agency, signing lucrative deals elsewhere. The fact that the Eagles allowed a player like Josh Sweat to walk proved that they are thinking about the future, knowing they need to break the bank on some younger homegrown players. If the rules applied to a guy like Sweat, who spent his entire career with the Eagles, then they would have to apply to Hendrickson as well. Never say never when it comes to Howie Roseman in the trade market, but Hendrickson's chances of going to Philadelphia were already slim. The fact that extension talks have picked back up, that could be a sign that Hendrickson is one of the top names off the trade block soon.
