United Way of Coastal Empire raised $9 million for region during 2025 campaign
The United Way of the Coastal Empire (UWCE) announced at a celebration on Tuesday evening that it had raised $9 million through its 2024-25 campaign. Nearly $5 million of that amount will be directed to the United Way's Community Fund, which, in part, channels resources back into the five-county service region by supporting nonprofits that provide services, such as affordable childcare, stable housing and financial empowerment for families. Another nearly $3 million will go towards grants, disaster relief funds and more. 'United Way's mission, as many of us know, is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of the community,' said UWCE CEO Kimberly Waller during the ceremony held at the Peregrin rooftop bar at the Perry Lane Hotel. 'And we do that by providing a strong safety net for the most vulnerable and creating pathways for upward mobility.' Three Savannah-based corporate donors―Gulfstream Aerospace, Colonial Group and Georgia Ports Authority― contributed more than half a million dollars each to the campaign. Gulfstream alone raised $1 million. 'After storms hit our area this past year, Gulfstream stepped up in a big way when we needed them most,' Waller said. Following the three storms last fall, UWCE activated its Rapid Response Disaster Fund, which, with $1 million in donations, helped provide hot meals to 3,700 people in need. 'This has been an incredible experience, and I'm deeply grateful for everyone who contributed to the success of this year's campaign,' said Yancey Ford, the 2025 campaign chair and Effingham County Schools Superintendent. UWCE kicked off its campaign in September 2024 with several performances from regional high school bands. The annual Turkey Trot, held on the morning of Thanksgiving, broke the event's record by raising more than $50,000 for the community fund. In March, the annual Women Who Rule campaign netted more than $105,000 for the Women United Transportation Fund, more than 25% of that sum was raised during a luncheon—a record-breaking amount that was collected through donations from people in the room. Bell backing Spicy Marg to pack Ascot punch
The Starspangledbanner filly sparkled on her racecourse debut, coming home two and three-quarter lengths clear at Newmarket on Guineas weekend and Bell is delighted with preparations and the draw in Berkshire. Spicy Marg will be partnered by Kieran Shoemark, and Bell said: 'She's all locked and loaded and we're very happy with her well-being. 'It (the draw) looks good, we've got Staya on our inside and all the major players seem to be drawn between eight and 15, so I think they're all in our sights so I'm very happy with the draw. 'It is a step up but the clock seems to say that she deserves to be in the race and she looks smart at home, so we'll see what happens on the day.' The Karl Burke-trained Zelaina is another who made an impressive debut when scooting home by the same winning margin as Spicy Marg at Nottingham. Richard Brown, racing adviser to owners Wathnan, said: 'We were delighted with Nottingham and we were excited the day we bought her, we were excited when we heard the reports from Karl, but she had had an interrupted prep going into Nottingham. 'She had banged a knee and she had missed 10 days so was definitely undercooked going there. 'We definitely think there is more improvement to come and she was very impressive. You have to be really excited about her and she's definitely one of the big hopes of the week. 'It's a Queen Mary and lots of people are thinking they have a big hope, but we think we do and we just need that bit of luck. They will be spread across the track and it will be a big field and fingers crossed she can do the job as she's a filly we're really excited about.' American runner Lennilu puts her unbeaten record on the line after winning on the dirt at Keeneland and following it up with a turf victory at Gulfstream Park. Trainer Patrick Biancone, who began his career in France when he sent out back-to-back Arc winners in All Along and Sagace, is happy with preparations and reported his filly was unfazed by the trip from America. He said: 'She won her maiden easily. We then decided to train her hopefully for the Queen Mary and we won the prep race that was sponsored by Gulfstream. She won that easily too. We were expecting her to run well there, but expecting it is one thing, doing it is another. 'She travelled very well. She's walking around well now, she slept really well. We knew she'd travel well because when she ran in Keeneland she had to go 17 hours there and 17 more to come back and she took it very well. 'Ascot is a special place for every trainer in the world, especially the Royal meeting. I've been lucky in my life to have good horses and she's one of them. We're very happy.' Aidan O'Brien will be represented by True Love, while other major players include Ralph Beckett's Society Kiss and George Scott's Staya in a field of 25.

100-year-old Gulfstream Hotel reopening in Lake Worth Beach. When?
After decades of waiting, the long-shuttered Gulfstream Hotel in downtown Lake Worth Beach will reopen its doors to patrons this fall, and would-be guests will be able to book reservations starting on June 19, 2025, for summer 2026, hotel representatives said in a press release. The Gulfstream Hotel, at One Lake Avenue, will open 90 rooms to customers when it opens this year, with 50 more rooms coming in 2026, the hotel said in a news release. It also will have 50 apartments, a rooftop restaurant, bar, spa, gym and a 273-space parking garage once fully opened. Nightly rates have not yet been published. The Gulfstream, built a few minutes' walk from The Intracoastal Waterway on Lake Worth Beach's easternmost city block, opened its doors in 1925. It has been closed since 2005. But even before then, it had gone through several closings, remodelings and reopenings. The storm's 145 mph winds blew the roof off the hotel, damaged its fifth and sixth floors and filled its lobby with 7 feet of sand. The crippled hotel opened again briefly but closed following bankruptcy brought about in the wake of the 1929 stock market crash. The hotel closed and reopened again in the 1980s and 1990s. It struggled financially as customers booked rooms in newer hotels along eastern Palm Beach County and its waterfront. The Gulfstream last booked customers from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s. The vacant hotel was bought and sold several times since then, before coming under ownership of Amy Gill and her husband, Amrit Gill, who head Missouri-based real estate development company Restoration St. Louis. They appealed to city voters in 2020 to approve a measure allowing them to build up the hotel's neighboring property to match the hotel's 87-foot height. Voters overwhelmingly approved that. 'We're thrilled to welcome the Gulfstream Hotel back into the fabric of Lake Worth Beach," Mayor Betty Resch said in the news release. "This project shows what's possible when history, vision, and community come together. I look forward to seeing residents and visitors alike enjoy this jewel of our city once again.'
