Bell backing Spicy Marg to pack Ascot punch

The Starspangledbanner filly sparkled on her racecourse debut, coming home two and three-quarter lengths clear at Newmarket on Guineas weekend and Bell is delighted with preparations and the draw in Berkshire.
Spicy Marg will be partnered by Kieran Shoemark, and Bell said: 'She's all locked and loaded and we're very happy with her well-being.
'It (the draw) looks good, we've got Staya on our inside and all the major players seem to be drawn between eight and 15, so I think they're all in our sights so I'm very happy with the draw.
'It is a step up but the clock seems to say that she deserves to be in the race and she looks smart at home, so we'll see what happens on the day.'
The Karl Burke-trained Zelaina is another who made an impressive debut when scooting home by the same winning margin as Spicy Marg at Nottingham.
Richard Brown, racing adviser to owners Wathnan, said: 'We were delighted with Nottingham and we were excited the day we bought her, we were excited when we heard the reports from Karl, but she had had an interrupted prep going into Nottingham.
'She had banged a knee and she had missed 10 days so was definitely undercooked going there.
'We definitely think there is more improvement to come and she was very impressive. You have to be really excited about her and she's definitely one of the big hopes of the week.
'It's a Queen Mary and lots of people are thinking they have a big hope, but we think we do and we just need that bit of luck. They will be spread across the track and it will be a big field and fingers crossed she can do the job as she's a filly we're really excited about.'
American runner Lennilu puts her unbeaten record on the line after winning on the dirt at Keeneland and following it up with a turf victory at Gulfstream Park.
Trainer Patrick Biancone, who began his career in France when he sent out back-to-back Arc winners in All Along and Sagace, is happy with preparations and reported his filly was unfazed by the trip from America.
He said: 'She won her maiden easily. We then decided to train her hopefully for the Queen Mary and we won the prep race that was sponsored by Gulfstream. She won that easily too. We were expecting her to run well there, but expecting it is one thing, doing it is another.
'She travelled very well. She's walking around well now, she slept really well. We knew she'd travel well because when she ran in Keeneland she had to go 17 hours there and 17 more to come back and she took it very well.
'Ascot is a special place for every trainer in the world, especially the Royal meeting. I've been lucky in my life to have good horses and she's one of them. We're very happy.'
Aidan O'Brien will be represented by True Love, while other major players include Ralph Beckett's Society Kiss and George Scott's Staya in a field of 25.

New Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh ‘relishing challenge' of overhauling Celtic

Gers have won only one top-flight title and three major honours in total since their financial implosion in 2012, with their city rivals dominating the trophy count in that period. However, Cavenagh, fronting an American consortium that took control of the Ibrox club earlier this month, is confident they can bridge the gap in Glasgow and, over time, assert the Light Blues as Scotland's leading force. 'We relish that challenge,' said Cavenagh, facing the media at Ibrox on Monday just hours after an EGM in the city in which their immediate plans were given the all-clear by shareholders. 'We are impatient, we are competitive and so we look forward to the challenge.' At today's General Meeting held today at the DoubleTree Hilton in Glasgow, shareholders voted in favour of all proposed resolutions, to support the club's future growth and investment plans. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 23, 2025 Pressed further on the scale of the task Rangers face as they bid to usurp a Celtic side thriving under Brendan Rodgers, Cavenagh said: 'We think it is achievable or we wouldn't be here. We don't think it will be easy. 'It is not going to happen instantaneously but we will strive to improve the on-field performance and we will continue to build the infrastructure of the club. If we didn't think we could win we wouldn't be here. We are here because we think we can. 'There is real work to be done, I think everyone is aware of that. Paraag (Marathe, vice-chairman) and I are two of the least patient people you will meet and we are also incredibly competitive so we share our supporters' sense of urgency. We are in with both feet today and we will move this forward as fast as we can.' Cavenagh – sure-footed and measured throughout his first briefing with Scottish journalists – outlined his aim of establishing Rangers as Champions League regulars. Andrew Cavenagh (left) and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe at Ibrox on Monday (Andrew Milligan/PA) 'Champions League is the goal we are trying to get to every year,' he said. 'It is important because it brings more revenue. It will always be our benchmark. 'It is not as if we are banking on that and if it doesn't happen then there is some sort of a problem. That is not the case at all. But it is our goal. 'As we increase revenue, which comes from the Champions League, then we get to re-invest that in the club. That is why it is the goal from both a sporting perspective and the revenue model perspective.' While the new owners are intent on ensuring financial sustainability, they were given the green light on Monday to get the ball rolling on their revival of the club with a £20million investment. '£20m is the amount of primary capital that we are putting in,' said Cavenagh. 'We have been careful to not say we won't put more in and to not say we will put more in. Russell Martin has impressed Rangers' new owners (Steve Welsh/PA) 'When we think about the amount of capital that is needed, we look at it through three lenses. The first is what impact will it have and we think £20m into the club – and again, we're not being specific about where the £20m is going – we think £20m is the right amount this summer. 'And the other two lenses that we look though are FSR (UEFA's Financial Sustainability Regulations) and making sure we are running the club in a sustainable way. 'We are not looking for what I think of as the sugar high – come in spend some money, sign some players and try to win something and then you have the sugar crash that comes from that.' One of the new owners' first big calls was to appoint Russell Martin as head coach earlier this month. 'There were four criteria that we looked at for head coach,' said Cavenagh. 'One, somebody that would coach what we think is the right style of play or game model. Two, someone who would build the culture and the way we think it needs to be built. 'Three, someone who will develop talent. And four, someone who will win matches. Russell was the standout across all of those metrics, unanimously among our team.'

Palace's Euro hopes boosted as John Textor sells stake to New York Jets owner

Textor's shares in Palace threatened to be an obstacle to their participation in the Europa League next season because the American is also a shareholder in French side Lyon, who are set to enter the same competition. Under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, it looked as though Palace would miss out. We can confirm that Robert Wood Johnson 'Woody' has signed a legally binding contract to purchase Eagle Football's holding in the club. Full club statement ⤵️#CPFC — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) June 23, 2025 However, Palace announced on Monday that Textor's 45 per cent stake in the London club has been sold to Johnson, subject to Premier League and Women's Super League approval. A club statement read: 'Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that Robert Wood Johnson, 'Woody', an American businessman and co-owner of the New York Jets, has signed a legally binding contract to purchase Eagle Football's holding in the club. 'Whilst the completion is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, we do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club. 'We would like to go on record to thank John Textor for his contribution over the past four years and wish him every success for the future.' Reports have placed the price between £160m and £190m. The sale may now free Palace up to play in the Europa League, for which the Eagles qualified thanks to their FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last month. Textor, who through his Eagle Football Holdings group also owns a significant stake in Brazilian side Botafogo, initially invested in Palace in 2021. The PA news agency understands a decision regarding Palace's participation is expected from UEFA before the end of June.

Inside the Rangers takeover as Andrew Cavenagh lifts lid on life-changing phonecall and names three reasons he said yes

The new chairman met the media after the club's EGM and revealed why he has taken on the challenge The Big Apple Bears Rangers Supporters club in New York was just a short cab ride away on 1st Avenue. If Andrew Cavenagh had known - he might have popped in for a pint to celebrate. ‌ Because it wasn't far away in a Manhattan cafe back in October that he got the call he says changed his life. ‌ A New York banker, Les Allan, phoned him shortly before Cavenagh was going to a baseball game at the Yankees stadium. Little did he know at that point that Ibrox in Glasgow would soon become his new favourite sports ground. Almost immediately, Cavenagh got in touch with Paraag Marathe at the San Francisco 49ers and the wheels were set in motion for their Rangers takeover. The health insurance billionaire went face-to-face with Gers punters at the club's EGM where their 51 percent purchase of the club was rubber-stamped. Cavenagh spoke impressively to shareholders at a city hotel, with authority, decisiveness and humour. After that, he headed for Govan to meet the media. And the 68-year-old didn't just lay out his plans to make Rangers the number one club in Scotland again. ‌ He talked passionately about being blown away by Ibrox and its fanbase. He revealed that going to Celtic Park for a 3-2 victory in March was one of the best experiences of his life. And of course, Cavenagh recalled the moment he was first asked if he'd be interested in taking charge of Rangers. ‌ He said: 'I was on the upper east side of Manhattan outside a coffee shop about to go to a New York Yankees game. I've known about Rangers forever as a football fan. 'So when the phone call came to ask if I'd have an interest, it was a lightning bolt moment for me. The call was from Les, a banker in New York. I had met him six months prior and he knew our group was interested in a rare but good opportunity in football. 'Les called me and I said absolutely. Three seconds later I was on the phone to Paraag. There are many things about this club that are attractive. ‌ 'But the big three are the supporters - the breadth and depth of the fanbase is incredible. We've not seen many other clubs in Europe with this sort of scope and passion. 'Ibrox is an incredibly magical place to attend as a supporter. And the competitions in which we play, the league, the cups and Europe. 'It's a physical experience when you walk upstairs at Ibrox. You walk up the marble stairs to the Blue Room and in the trophy room in particular you can just feel the history. ‌ 'There's no other way to describe it. You walk in and instantly feel indebted to the people who have come before you. 'But you also have the desire to do everything you possibly can, not just to improve the history, but also improve the trajectory.' This isn't a deal Cavenagh, his investment group and the San Francisco 49ers have rushed into. From that first call in October, it took eight months to get the deal over the line. ‌ But in that time, the American has been learning about Rangers, their supporters and the club's heritage. He's seen Ibrox at its best, on European nights against Fenerbahce and Athletic Bilbao - and at its worst when fans staged a protest before a St Johnstone game. He says he's ready for any future flak that might come his way if things go wrong. And in terms of the club's intense rivalry with Celtic, he got a first hand experience of it when Barry Ferguson's team pulled off a rare victory there towards the end of last season. ‌ Cavenagh said: 'Look, I've been a football fan all my life. I've been to five World Cups and five European Championships. I've been to countless matches. I did 14 new stadiums in the last year. 'The last few months have been an incredible experience for me. One of my favourite moments in life is the five minutes before the match kicks off when you can feel the electricity. 'I was lucky to go to the match at Parkhead and it was incredible. I learned a couple of new phrases and gestures when I was there but it was a fantastic experience. ‌ 'It was the first match where our fans were allowed back in and we had 2500 fans there. But they were incredibly loud and vocal in showing their support. 'It was one of the best football experiences of my life. Am I ready for criticism at some point? Well, I was a goalkeeper growing up and we had a play-off match. 'My coach said everyone is going to make mistakes today but there's a special thing that keeps track of yours - it's called a scoreboard. ‌ 'Being a keeper teaches you that you can have big moments where you have to make big decisions - and you have to live with the ones you get wrong. So I'm prepared.' Cavenagh's first job was to play his part in appointing a new head coach at Ibrox and he chose Russell Martin ahead of other candidates. So what was it about the former Southampton boss that made him the right fit for Rangers. Cavenagh is convinced he's got the right man. ‌ He said: 'There were four criteria we looked at for head coach. One, somebody that would coach what we think is the right style of play or game model. 'Two, someone would build the culture and the way we think it needs to be built. Three, someone who will develop talent. And four, someone who will win matches. 'Russell was the standout across all of those metrics, unanimously among our team. And we are thrilled to have him as our head coach.' ‌ But Martin will be judged on results, both domestically and in Europe. Earlier in the day at the EGM, Marathe told fans there will be no honeymoon period for the new gaffer. And he's already been faced with the huge task of getting past Panathinaikos in a Champions League qualifier next month. You get the impression that Cavenagh isn't here for Europa League football. ‌ He wants to dine at Europe's top table but insists it's NOT imperative that Martin and his team reach the group stage this season. He said: 'I look at this pretty simply - we have plans for anything. It's not as if we're banking on that (CL qualification) and if it doesn't happen then there is some sort of a problem. 'That is not the case at all. But it IS our goal. As we increase revenue, which comes from the Champions League, then we get to re-invest that in the club. 'That is why it's the goal from both a sporting perspective and the revenue model perspective. We'll try to get that every year but we have to get through three sets of matches and that won't be easy. But it's important because it brings more revenue. It will always be our benchmark.'
