Air travelers should never put this precious item in security bins when going through TSA: ‘Stolen on a regular basis'

Getting robbed of this precious cargo will have you flying off the handles. For most people, there's no acute agony quite like the pain and panic of losing one's cell phone, especially at the airport. But a travel expert warns that digital devices are at high risk of being swiped by ne'er-do-wells when the gadgets are placed in the bins at security checkpoints. 'The thing I'm absolutely never doing when I'm going through TSA — I am not putting my phone directly into one of the containers,' swore Tiffany, an on-the-go pro, from Pittsburg, in a beware bulletin. 'It's always going in a zipped pocket in my bag.' The brunette's not being paranoid, she's being proactive. Tiffany explained to her over 297,000 TikTok viewers that she once innocently plopped her phone into a TSA receptacle, and was immediately reprimanded for making the grave mistake. 'The TSA agent looked at me and was like, 'You don't like your phone?' And I looked at him like he was a little crazy and I said, 'Yes,'' she recounted. 'He said, 'This is the fastest way to get it stolen.'' 'The number one thing they see stolen on a regular basis is phones,' Tiffany emphasized, 'and it's because they are left out and available — the lines can back up, you're not paying attention until you realize and it's too late.' It's a useful forewarning for frequent flyers. An Air France flight from Paris to Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, was recently forced to make a U-turn after a passenger lost their phone. There are a lucky few who do retrieve their lost or stolen electronics from TSA. In fact, the authorities claim that close to 100,000 lost items are recovered each year, per the TSA website. 'Passengers are encouraged to place their contact information on the outside of their electronics, such as laptops, in case the item is left behind. TSA will make every effort to reunite passengers with their belongings,' the officials say. 'Unclaimed electronics will have its memory removed and destroyed (e.g. laptop hard drive) or be destroyed completely (e.g. items with non-removable memory) to protect personal data after the 30-day holding period,' the noted. And who wants all that drama? Hoping to help folks avoid the chaos, Tiffany doubled down on her word-to-the-wise. 'Always make sure your valuables are zipped up [inside] your bag when they go through the scanners,' she urged.

Dan Storper, Evangelist of World Music, Dies at 74

Dan Storper, a retailer who founded the Putumayo World Music record label, which gathered sounds from every corner of the globe, helping to propel the world music boom of the 1990s and beyond with compilation CDs that sold in the millions, died on May 22 at his home in New Orleans. He was 74. The cause was pancreatic cancer, his son, William, said. Mr. Storper's label began as an offshoot of Putumayo, a now-closed retail chain that he started in New York in 1975, selling handicrafts and clothing from around the world. He founded the label with a friend, Michael Kraus, in 1993, and it became a showcase for genres that had received little mainstream recognition, especially in the United States, such as zouk, from Guadeloupe in the Caribbean; soukous, from Congo; and son cubano, from Cuba. With distinctive folk-art album covers by the British artist Nicola Heindl, the label developed a strong brand identity, luring neophyte buyers who broadly understood what they were getting with a Putumayo release, even if they knew nothing about the music itself. 'The whole concept was to bring the music to a community of people that weren't specifically world music freaks, but were interested in music and culture and travel,' Jacob Edgar, Putumayo's longtime ethnomusicologist, said in an interview. 'It was really almost more of a lifestyle brand at its height, and that was really revolutionary at the time.' Others came to agree. 'Before Putumayo came along, world music was dry field recordings,' Chris Fleming, of the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan, said in an interview with The New York Times in 2003. 'Putumayo single-handedly revolutionized the whole genre.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

France asks for some Citroen cars with faulty airbags to be taken off roads, report says

PARIS, June 17 (Reuters) - French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot has requested that all Citroen C3 and DS3 vehicles subject to a Takata airbag recall be taken off the roads, French media reported on Tuesday, after reports that a woman died after her airbag was triggered. The French government has said that vehicles built between 1998 and 2019 are likely to be subject to a recall campaign over faulty airbags, which can explode when they are deployed. The explosion can throw metal fragments and cause serious injury or death. Representatives for the transport ministry, Citroen parent Stellantis ( opens new tab, and a local official did not immediately respond to requests for comment. French media reported that a woman died and a teenager was injured after an airbag deployment earlier this month. Another person died in March after the deployment of a faulty airbag in the French Caribbean territory of Guadeloupe, an official said. Takata Corporation, the company at the centre of the auto industry's biggest-ever product recall, filed for bankruptcy in 2017. At the time of the bankruptcy filing, its U.S. operations said Takata had recalled or expected to recall about 125 million vehicles worldwide by 2019.

Tiffany & Co's iconic Bird on a Rock graces the wrist in a stunning new watch

If money were no object, many jewellery connoisseurs will tell you that their dream piece to add to their collection is one of Tiffany & Co's iconic Bird on a Rock brooches. Conceived by Jean Schlumberger in 1965, the brooch features a diamond-set bird perched on a large coloured gemstone. It's a delightfully quirky design, blending high jewellery with a touch of whimsy. Schlumberger is celebrated is one of the greatest jewellery designers of all time and spent more than three decades as a designer for Tiffany & Co, from 1956 to 1987. The story goes that Schlumberger was inspired by a yellow cockatoo that he encountered on his travels abroad to Asia and the Caribbean, including at his beloved home in Guadeloupe. The Bird on a Rock has now become an emblematic motif for Tiffany & Co. It is also a red-carpet staple, adorning countless celebrities and solidifying its place as a symbol of timeless elegance. Celebrities who have been spotted wearing a Bird on a Rock brooch include Michael B Jordan, Win Metawin, Lady Gaga, Jeremy Allen White and more. A miniature version of the Bird on a Rock now adorns a new watch by Tiffany & Co – and it's just as mesmerising. The Bird on a Rock Legacy watch features a gemstone held in place by a double-ended prong subtly textured to resemble the claws of a bird. The white mother-of-pearl dial is engraved with a delicate floral design inspired by the many floral patterns found in Schlumberger's Caribbean home. On the caseback, artisans have carved a precise aperture, inset with a magnifying lens, to reveal the hidden beauty of the gemstone's reverse. The flange encircling the dial is adorned with diamonds, enhancing the luster of the mother-of-pearl. The watch comes in three variations with three different gemstones – with an oval morganite of 1.45 carats, a cushion-cut tanzanite of 2.72 carats or an emerald-cut aquamarine of 2.1 carats. Each version showcases Tiffany & Co's jewellery and gem-setting mastery. For one, the 18k gold bird is hand-sculpted by a jeweller, set with 119 diamonds along with a pink sapphire for the eye. A signature of all Bird on a Rock watches, the 36mm case features snow-set diamonds. Snow-setting is a technique where round brilliant diamonds of different sizes are set to create a glittering expanse of light and reflection, with minimal visible metal. In all, the Bird on a Rock Legacy watch is set with a total of 587 diamonds of 3.6 total carats. The 309 diamonds on the case are complemented by 116 diamonds on the bezel, dial and flange. A sprinkling of diamonds highlights the engraved sunburst pattern on the caseback and the signature T buckle fastening the alligator strap is set with 43 round brilliant diamonds. The watch is powered by a high-precision quartz movement.
