Four new govt arts and science colleges to be started in TN

Last Updated: Chennai, May 30 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu government would start four more arts and science colleges across the state to enable the rural students access higher education, Chief Minister M K Stalin informed on Friday. These government colleges would be established during the 2025-26 academic year at K V Kuppam in Vellore district, Thuraiyur in Tiruchirappalli district, Ulundurpet in Kallakurichi district and Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district. The gesture would help 1,120 students in these districts to receive higher education, an official release here quoted the Chief Minister as saying. 'The enrolment of students in higher education in Tamil Nadu has been increasing continuously due to pilot schemes like Pudumaipen and Tamil Puthlavan," the release said. In order to fulfill the need for higher education, the Chief Minister inaugurated 11 new Government Arts and Science Colleges through video conferencing at the Secretariat on behalf of the Higher Education Department, on May 26. The Government Periyar Arts College has established an Admission Facilitation Centre to enable students to apply for first-year admission online. Going by the demand last year, the college authorities expect more number of students to apply this time. Last year, there were over 17,880 applicants for 1,375 seats in various first-year programmes in the Government Arts College. The online admission process will be carried out till May 27 and the admissions are likely to be completed by the end of next month so that classes could be started for first year students from August, official sources said. According to an official, a single application would suffice for 176 Government Arts and Science Colleges across the State. A team of faculty members are deputed every day to handle the online admission process for the students from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. At least 50 students turn up every day, he said. Right from user registration, the staff help out the students to log in, fill in personal information, and furnish details pertaining to special reservation, scholarship, school of study, and academic qualification. The students admitted in government colleges are exempted from paying tuition fee. Those among the students in government and government-aided colleges who had undergone their schooling in government schools from Classes VI to XII are entitled to a monthly assistance of ₹1,000 (Under Pudhumai Pen scheme for girls and Tamil Pudhalvan scheme for boys). Admission facilitation centres have also been established in other government colleges colleges — Chidambaram (intake of 1,130), Vadalur (230), Vriddhachalam (1,514), Kattumannarkovil (330), Thittagudi (600) and Panruti (270). An application fee of ₹48 and registration fee of ₹2 could be remitted through debit card/credit card/net banking/ UPI. Plus Two results: Virudhunagar district slips to 7th rank in overall pass percentage

Despite an identical pass percentage of 96.64% in the Plus Two examination for the second consecutive year, Virudhunagar district slipped to 7th rank in overall pass percentage. This is one rank below the 2024 results in which the district had secured 6th position in the State. The State average in overall pass percentage this year has been 95.03%. Out of the 21,778 students, belonging to 221 higher secondary schools, who were issued hall tickets for the examination, only 21,046 of them passed out when the results were published on Thursday. Among the successful students were 11,433 girls (11,686 who had appeared) and 9,613 boys (10,092). As usual, the girls had out-performed the boys what with 97.84% of girls and only 95.25% boys had passed out in the district. A statement from the Chief Educational Officer said that a total of 74 higher secondary schools -- 13 Government schools, 19 aided schools and 42 private schools -- in the district had secured 100% pass percentage. Only 93.17% of the students who had appeared from 101 Government Higher Secondary Schools had passed out. One student each had secured centum marks in Tamil and English. The centums bagged by students of the district in other subjects is Physics 8, Chemistry 22, Mathematics 43, Computer Science 251, Biology 1, Botany 17, Zoology 2, History 10, Economic 19, Accountancy 51, Commerce 55, Geography 1, Business Mathematics 12, Computer Application 106, Office Management 1 and French 2. Admission in Government colleges Students of Government and Government-aided schools who had passed out of Plus Two, can apply for admission in under-graduation courses in Government Arts and Science Colleges through till May 27. In a statement, Virudhunagar Collector V. P. Jeyaseelan said that Government Arts and Science Colleges were functioning in Srivilliputtur, Sivakasi, Sattur, Aruppukottai and Tiruchuli in the district. The students could get monthly educational assistance of ₹1,000 under Puthumai Penn and Tamil Puthalvan schemes.
