New Argentinian court to hold trial over Diego Maradona's death
Seven medical professionals are on trial for the possible involuntary manslaughter of the legendary footballer in 2020. 20 Jun 2025 04:52pm Argentina's national football fans with a flag with the picture of late Argentine football legend Diego Maradona and Forward Lionel Messi attend a training session with the U20 national team at the Tomas Adolfo Duco Stadium in Buenos Aires, on March 22, 2025. - (Photo by ALEJANDRO PAGNI/AFP) BUENOS AIRES - A new trial into the death of Argentinian football hero Diego Maradona is to be held outside Buenos Aires, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. Media reports on Thursday said the seventh criminal court in San Isidro, near the Argentinian capital, was chosen by lot to carry out the trial following a scandal involving a previous judge. Seven medical professionals are on trial for the possible involuntary manslaughter of the legendary footballer in 2020. Judges Roberto Gaig, Alejandro Lago and Alberto Ortolani are to conduct the new trial. The first trial was declared null and void in late May after around two and a half months because the judge involved, Julieta Makintach, had simultaneously worked on an unauthorised documentary about the trial. She has since been suspended from office and is awaiting separate impeachment proceedings. It remains to be seen when the new main proceedings will begin. Although a new trial date could theoretically be set soon, judicial circles are increasingly expecting a postponement to 2026. Reasons given include a busy schedule and expected delaying tactics by the defence lawyers. Maradona died of heart failure in November 2020 at the age of 60, a few weeks after an operation for a blood clot in his brain. The public prosecutor's office accuses the medical staff of gross negligence in their care. - BERNAMA

Trump To Decide On US entry Into Iran Conflict Within Two Weeks
WASHINGTON, June 20 (Bernama-dpa) -- US President Donald Trump is to make a decision on joining Israeli strikes against Iran within two weeks, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. Trump believes "there's a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future" that could avert the US entry into the conflict, Leavitt said in Washington. "Nobody should be surprised by the president's position that Iran absolutely cannot obtain a nuclear weapon. He's been unequivocally clear about this for decades," she added.

Foreign ministers from Germany, France, UK to meet with Iran's FM
BERLIN: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and his counterparts in France and the United Kingdom (UK) are planning to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Geneva on Friday, German Press Agency (dpa) has learned from diplomatic sources. Wadephul had adjusted his originally planned Middle East trip to Lebanon, Syria, and Israel immediately after the start of Israel's attack on Iran on Friday. Instead, he travelled to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman for crisis talks. The government in Oman, in particular, has very strong contacts with Tehran. With this meeting, Wadephul is aiming to coordinate an initiative involving the so-called E3 state - Germany, France, and the UK - which have been negotiating with Tehran over its nuclear programme for years, as well as with neighbouring Arab states, to achieve a diplomatic solution to the war. For nearly two months, the United States and Iran had been negotiating under the mediation of Oman before Israel launched a major attack on Iran on Friday, targeting nuclear facilities, military installations, and sites in major cities. Iran has responded with intense missile strikes against Israel.

No details from China after Trump announces "done" trade deal
BEIJING: (Bernama-dpa) The United States and China have made progress in resolving differences on their economies and trade, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said in Beijing on Thursday (June 12) without providing details, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. Lin was speaking after US President Donald Trump said that a trade agreement that would include Chinese supplies of magnets and critical rare earth minerals had almost been finalised. Lin said China hoped that the two sides could work together to implement the consensus agreed in London. Trump announced an agreement on Wednesday on his Truth Social platform. "Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me," Trump posted after US and Chinese negotiating teams wrapped up two days of talks in London. "Full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China. Likewise, we will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!)," he posted. Trump also said there had been a deal on tariffs, with US tariffs on imports from China at 55 per cent and Chinese reciprocal tariffs at 10 per cent. Following talks in London on Monday and Tuesday, delegates said they planned to implement the consensus agreed in Geneva in mid-May, where agreement was reached to cut import tariffs by 115 percentage points on both sides for a period of 90 days. Details of the Geneva and London agreements have not been released, with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick saying in London that the text of the agreement would not be published. - Bernama-dpa

Neuer: Bayern happy to be at Club World Cup while others miss out
ORLANDO: Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is happy to be at the new-look Club World Cup and said only time will tell whether the event will be a success, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. The football tournament has been expanded from seven to 32 teams and has a prize money of around US$1 billion (RM4.2 billion). Critics say it adds to an already saturated match calendar and raises player burnout fears. Bayern, who arrived on Tuesday at their base camp in Florida, and Borussia Dortmund are Germany's representatives at the June 14 to July 13 event in the United States. But with European countries limited to two teams per country, and with qualifying based on past results, there are also prominent absentees such as English champions Liverpool and Spanish double winners Barcelona. "I believe it is something special to be part of it. There are teams which are not part of it. It hurts them. They would surely also like to play," Neuer said ahead of Bayern's opener on Sunday against Auckland City. The tournament is to be held every four years, and Neuer did not want to come to any conclusions about it just yet. "We will see in a few years or decades what kind of standing this tournament format will have. It is difficult to say right now because it is played for the first time," he said. "We are looking forward to the tournament. We know what is at stake and we are happy to be part of it." But Neuer also said he was aware of the risks as the event, after a long domestic and European season, adds considerably to player workload. "The calendar is becoming tighter and tighter. This tournament takes place every four years. It is good that it isn't every year. It is becoming more and more. That is something to think about," Neuer said. – BERNAMA-dpa
