Man wins £10m lottery jackpot – then wife delivers unexpected news
A man secured a whopping lottery win only for his wife to announce she too had big news moments after, something he admits he 'didn't believe' at first A man who secured a whopping £10 million lottery win was left stunned when his wife delivered 'unbelievable' news. The man managed to match all of the numbers on April 23. Moments later his wife revealed she too had won big, choosing an almost identical set of numbers. While she missed out on the main jackpot, her ticket was enough to bag around £51,000. The couple, from Hillion in Brittany, France, have chosen to remain anonymous as they adjust to their newfound riches. Speaking to Française des Jeux, the company that administers the nation's lottery, the man said he 'didn't believe it' at first. They won the jackpot in April, but have only just decided to validate their tickets, reports ICI. Mathematicians estimate the odds of winning the lottery with a single bet are around one in 19 million. They said winning two of the prizes on the night is an 'extremely rare joint probability,' although they concluded it is mathematically possible. The couple's jackpot is the second-highest ever claimed in the Côtes-d'Armor region. It comes after another lucky winner secured around £14.4 million in the EuroMillions draw in March 2020. After their win, the local shopkeeper says he has seen a notable increase in people coming in to buy their lottery tickets. Cecile, who owns the tobacco shop in Le Havane, said: 'People are much more likely to come in and play.' The excitement has even spilled over into neighbouring business in Hillion. Charlotte, who owns a beauticians nearby, said: 'People were stopping or slowing down while pointing at the tobacco shop last week.' Customers visiting the tobacconists however say they are well aware of the luck needed to pick the winning digits. Speaking to ICI, Fabien said: 'These are people who chose their numbers. If they had played elsewhere, they would have won too.' The largest lottery win in Europe is said to have been in Spain, where a single winning ticket secured a £316,214,310 jackpot. It was however split between 90 people. Meanwhile a EuroMillions winner in the UK secured a £195.7m jackpot in 2022. It put them among the top 15 lottery wins of all time in the United Kingdom. At the time, Andy Carter, Camelot's senior winners' adviser at the National Lottery, said: "This is absolutely incredible news." It put the winner ahead of Joe Thwaite and his wife, Jess, from Gloucestershire, who previously held the record for the biggest UK lottery win. The couple secured £184m in May 2022. Joe, who discovered the win when he checked his phone at 5.15am, said: "Generally my luck is pretty terrible, to be honest with you. "I saw how much and I didn't know what to do. I couldn't go back to sleep, I didn't want to wake Jess up, so I just laid there for what seemed like forever. I spent some time searching for property with no budget limit, which was a novelty!"
