Man wins £10m lottery jackpot – then wife delivers unexpected news
A man secured a whopping lottery win only for his wife to announce she too had big news moments after, something he admits he 'didn't believe' at first
A man who secured a whopping £10 million lottery win was left stunned when his wife delivered 'unbelievable' news.
The man managed to match all of the numbers on April 23. Moments later his wife revealed she too had won big, choosing an almost identical set of numbers.
While she missed out on the main jackpot, her ticket was enough to bag around £51,000. The couple, from Hillion in Brittany, France, have chosen to remain anonymous as they adjust to their newfound riches.
Speaking to Française des Jeux, the company that administers the nation's lottery, the man said he 'didn't believe it' at first. They won the jackpot in April, but have only just decided to validate their tickets, reports ICI.
Mathematicians estimate the odds of winning the lottery with a single bet are around one in 19 million. They said winning two of the prizes on the night is an 'extremely rare joint probability,' although they concluded it is mathematically possible.
The couple's jackpot is the second-highest ever claimed in the Côtes-d'Armor region. It comes after another lucky winner secured around £14.4 million in the EuroMillions draw in March 2020.
After their win, the local shopkeeper says he has seen a notable increase in people coming in to buy their lottery tickets. Cecile, who owns the tobacco shop in Le Havane, said: 'People are much more likely to come in and play.'
The excitement has even spilled over into neighbouring business in Hillion. Charlotte, who owns a beauticians nearby, said: 'People were stopping or slowing down while pointing at the tobacco shop last week.'
Customers visiting the tobacconists however say they are well aware of the luck needed to pick the winning digits. Speaking to ICI, Fabien said: 'These are people who chose their numbers. If they had played elsewhere, they would have won too.'
The largest lottery win in Europe is said to have been in Spain, where a single winning ticket secured a £316,214,310 jackpot. It was however split between 90 people.
Meanwhile a EuroMillions winner in the UK secured a £195.7m jackpot in 2022. It put them among the top 15 lottery wins of all time in the United Kingdom.
At the time, Andy Carter, Camelot's senior winners' adviser at the National Lottery, said: "This is absolutely incredible news."
It put the winner ahead of Joe Thwaite and his wife, Jess, from Gloucestershire, who previously held the record for the biggest UK lottery win. The couple secured £184m in May 2022.
Joe, who discovered the win when he checked his phone at 5.15am, said: "Generally my luck is pretty terrible, to be honest with you.
"I saw how much and I didn't know what to do. I couldn't go back to sleep, I didn't want to wake Jess up, so I just laid there for what seemed like forever. I spent some time searching for property with no budget limit, which was a novelty!"

Reason playing EuroMillions now gives you best chance of winning £14m jackpot
EuroMillions runners Allwyn have said people could be within a better chance of winning the coveted grand prize if they get in on the ground floor after a rollover EuroMillions players have their best chances of winning the multi-million-pound jackpot ever for one key reason, the lotto organisers have revealed. The grand prize - which grew to an incredible £208 million (€250 million) this week before it was claimed by one ultra-lucky Irish winner - has reset, and returns tonight with a much reduced but still sizeable £14 million fortune up for grabs. Potentially hundreds of millions of people will be buying EuroMillions tickets as they jostle for an opportunity to scoop up the life-changing cash, despite the generally slim chances of a possible win. According to organisers Allwyn, people who play for the unajusted base amount have a better chance of winning. A spokesperson for the firm said that fewer people tend to play when the prize is "just" £14 million, with more players crawling out of the woodwork when the sum reaches eye-popping nine-figures. They told The Sun "excitement grows" as the jackpot multiplies, with more groups and "syndicates" joining the fray as it continues to gather steam. They said: "EuroMillions is designed to be a huge, rolling jackpot game. So, we always have more people enter as the jackpot rises and excitement grows. "We also see more syndicates and groups playing the game as the jackpot climbs. However, every draw, the odds of winning the jackpot remain the same no matter what the jackpot amount." The spokesperson added it could be argued that, when fewer people participate in a EuroMillions draw, they are "less likely to share" their winnings with others. They concluded: "You could possibly argue that, if fewer people play, then you are potentially less likely to share the jackpot with other winners." The odds of winning at all, however, remain vanishingly slim at roughly one in 139,838,160, a rate that remains unchanged regardless of the number of people who buy tickets. The chances of winning any one of the smallest totals is also quite low, with one in 621,503 people winning the lowest four-figure amount of £1,405.23. The chances of winning just over a tenner in the draw are nearly one in 1,000, and only one in 22 players stand a chance of picking up just £2.72. The last EuroMillions jackpot winner was a player who purchased their ticket at a shop in County Cork, Ireland, who came forward to claim their prize on June 19. Little else is known about the mysterious jackpot winner, who is the 18th person from Ireland to claim the prize, which is the largest to be received in the country. The last person to win the EuroMillions jackpot came forward in February 2022, when they claimed a quick pick ticket worth £25.6 million (€30.9 million).

Set for life draw results: Full list of the winning numbers
One ticket holder has struck it lucky after winning the Set for Life £10,000 a month for a year prize. The lottery draw was held last night and the winning numbers were 8, 10, 12, 28 and 45. The life ball number was 9. No one got all five numbers and the life ball, which would have seen them win £10,000 a year for 30 years. However, one holder matched five numbers, which means they win £10,000 a month for a year. It's not clear if the prize has been claimed. Set For Life is an annuity lottery, which means that its biggest prizes are paid out in regular instalments over an extended period of time, rather than in one lump sum. If you win the top prize you will receive regular payments into your bank account of £10,000 a month for the next 30 years. The second prize pays out £10,000 a month for 12 months. There is a prize fund cap of £16 million, which would require five players to match all the numbers. If this ever happens, each winner will be given the choice as to whether to receive their share of the £16 million as an annuity or a lump sum. If you enter as a syndicate, the National Lottery will only pay out the prize to a single claimant, so the syndicate would need to decide who is responsible for claiming the prize and how the annuity payments will be shared with other members of the syndicate. From time to time, the National Lottery holds Set For Life Super Chance draws. In these draws, you only have to match five main numbers to win the top prize of £10,000 for 30 years. This week mum-of-four Olivia Love, 36, shared what she does day-to-day after winning £10,000 a month for a year. The 36-year-old scooped her Set for Life prize in May and has since quit her supermarket job. More Trending Yesterday it was revealed the lucky EuroMillions winner who scooped £208,000,000 on Tuesday bought their ticket in County Cork. The prize – the largest in EuroMillions history – remained unclaimed for a couple of days but the winner has now made contact with the National Lottery, it was confirmed. The jackpot had been sat at £208million for two weeks after it reached its maximum size earlier this month. This will be Ireland's 18th winner of the EuroMillions jackpot.
