Goon disguised as security guard zooms around in bizman's car, commits murder

Nagpur: A Bhandara-based criminal, Akash Narnaware, 24, who committed serial crimes in the guise of a security guard was exposed after the murder of a 60-year-old scrap dealer, Abdul Rahim, at Wathoda Ring Road. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Every night, Narnaware would stealthily drive out with the car of a businessman, as the owner preferred to leave the key in the basement. Sources stated Narnaware, nabbed from Gondia on Wednesday, also had a past murder case against him in Nagpur rural. CCTV footage of Narnaware's heinous assault on Rahim with a broken axe from the victim's scrap shop left police startled by its brutality. What also intrigued Nandanvan police was the assailant donning the uniform of a security guard, who reached the murder site on a grey-coloured Fortuner SUV. Scanning of CCTV cameras at various locations led Nandanvan police team of senior inspector Vinayak Koli and Zonal DCP Rashmitha Rao to an apartment at Shankar Nagar, where the Fortuner car was spotted. The image of the assailant in CCTV footage helped police get the first crucial clue on the assailant's identity. Police said Narnaware bore a grudge against Rahim, likely related to a monetary dispute over sale of stolen scrap. Narnaware was spotted on CCTV footage in the early hours of June 14 in front of Rahim's shop, which had cameras fitted on the exterior of the outlet. After parking the car, he was seen walking up to Rahim, who was asleep outside his outlet. Narnaware picked up a broken axe to repeatedly assault Rahim. As per CCTV footage, Narnaware struck Rahim seven times. Rahim succumbed to injuries on June 16 at the govt medical college and hospital. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The attack led to a commotion, which drew attention of Rahim's kin, who reached the place too. Narnaware managed the situation by stating he too was surprised to see the victim lying in a pool of blood after he reached the scrap shop to pick a spanner as his car developed a snag. Zonal DCP Rao stated cell phone call details of Narnaware suggested he may have had some dealings with the victim (Rahim). "We are not ruling out the murder to be a fallout of a monetary dispute over scrap sales," said Rao, adding her team from Nandanvan police station picked up Narnaware from his kin's residence when he was engaged in dining. DCP Rashmitha Rao informed that an additional offence was registered against the unauthorised security agencies that hired goon Akash Narnaware without police verification. "Security guards cannot be deployed without valid police clearances and verifications. The violations would attract penal provisions," said Rao, adding an offence was registered against Ashish Bagde for operating security agencies where guards were deployed without police verification.

Toyota clears the air on insurer's lawsuit over 2022 Durban floods

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) says it has nothing to do with a lawsuit brought by its insurer against several government bodies in connection with the devastating floods that ravaged KwaZulu-Natal in 2022. The case has been filed by Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co Ltd, the company that covered Toyota's losses after flooding shut down its Prospecton manufacturing plant near Durban in April 2022. The insurer is now going after the eThekwini municipality, the department of transport and Transnet in an effort to recover the payout it made. This kind of legal move is known as subrogation — when one party steps into the legal rights of another party, typically to pursue a claim or recover losses. The process often involves an insurance company taking over a policyholder's right to sue a responsible third party after paying out a claim. Toyota, however, has made it clear it's not behind the lawsuit, not funding it and won't see a cent if the insurer wins the case. 'We became aware of the legal proceedings and, with Tokio Marine's approval, reached out to the parties involved to let them know what was coming,' said TSAM in a statement. With the matter now officially before the courts, TSAM says it won't be commenting any further. Questions about the case, it added, should be directed to Tokio Marine. The 2022 floods caused widespread damage across the province and forced a temporary shutdown of the Prospecton plant, which is a key production hub for models such as the Hilux, Fortuner, Hiace, Corolla Cross and Corolla Quest. The disaster also dealt a blow to the local supply chain and export schedules.

Gift of the Givers faces intimidation from 'water mafia' during flood relief efforts

Gift of the Givers teams are now being escorted to deliver water to residents in Mthatha. Image: Gift of the Givers Humanitarian aid organisation, Gift of the Givers, which has been pivotal in assisting those affected by the floods in the Eastern Cape, are being intimidated by 'water mafia'. Speaking to IOL, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, founder and chairman of Gift of the Givers, said members of the 'water mafia' have been trying to intimidate its drivers while delivering life-saving water to the people of Mthatha who have been severely affected by the recent floods. 'Given the hardships and difficulties of the people and the fact that 90 people have passed on, the behaviour of the water mafia is totally disgusting. We appreciate the fact that the SAPS acted immediately by sending out a convoy (vehicle in front and behind) our water tankers. The situation has completely calmed down. However, we are calling on the community of Mthatha to help us locate a black [Toyota] Fortuner. It is the Fortuner from which the threat was made; this person needs to be arrested,' Dr Sooliman said. He also issued a stern warning for the 'water mafia'. Next Stay Close ✕ 'This is a message to all water mafia: we will take you on wherever you are. Gift of the Givers is not afraid of anyone. We have the support of the government, SAPS, SANDF, and above all, we have the support of the communities and the municipalities. When it comes to assisting people in dire need, as is the case in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, this kind of heinous behaviour has to stop. Profiteering from the hardships of people has to stop. We hope we are provided support in all areas where the water mafia is capitalising,' he said. Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, also strongly condemns the threats and intimidation directed at Gift of the Givers. 'It is alleged that members of a so-called 'water mafia' reportedly linked to service providers contracted by the OR Tambo District Municipality, threatened Gift of the Givers staff as they distributed clean drinking water to residents impacted by the recent floods,' Mchunu said. Mchunu was in Mthatha at the weekend to engage with and thank members of the SAPS for their efforts during the floods, which have, to date, claimed 90 lives and displaced hundreds more. 'The police will not tolerate any attempt to intimidate or obstruct those who are working tirelessly to save lives and bring relief to our people. Gift of the Givers has consistently been a source of hope and dignity to South Africans in their hour of need. Any attack on them is an attack on the very principle of Ubuntu. No individual or group will be allowed to profiteer off disaster or compromise the safety and well-being of our people. Law enforcement will act decisively,' Mchunu said. He further stated the SAPS will ensure the safety of all humanitarian workers in the area and hold those responsible fully accountable under the law. 'We have also been made aware of individuals who go to the homes of those who lost their lives due to these floods, with a view to committing acts of theft from these homes. Police have been deployed to ensure the safety of the property of the deceased,' Mchunu added. Dr Sooliman welcomed the backing by the minister. IOL

Noida: Police rescued a businessman and his driver who were kidnapped on Thursday, and also arrested five persons who reached out to their targets by offering fraudulent loan assistance. Two cars (Fortuner and Sonnet) that were stolen from the abducted men and Rs 75,000 in cash, one Samsung watch, three mobile phones, eight ATM cards, Aadhar cards, one laptop with a charger, two cheque books, and an illegal pistol with cartridges were recovered from the accused. They assaulted the duo and also took away the car, money, and other valuables from the house. According to Shakti Mohan Avasthy, deputy commissioner of police, Central Noida, the accused were traced on Saturday following a tip-off received by Surajpur police. They would build a rapport with the targets, only to provide a large amount of money and soon threaten them to return it at the rate of 30 percent interest per month. Targets who refused to do so were kidnapped and assaulted. The duo contacted Akshaydeep and Chetan Yadav (sons of Yadav) to arrange a loan for their company, Pawan Energy India, based out of Sector 135. In Sept 2024, Pravendra sent them Rs 3 crore but soon demanded 30% monthly interest. The Yadavs repaid Rs 3.17 crore, but the gang demanded another Rs 3 crore. When they refused, the gang kidnapped Yadav and his driver, Sachin, at gunpoint. They were then taken to Sonipat and later brought back to force them to pay Rs 3 crore. An FIR was filed against seven persons under sections 140(1) (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351 (3) (criminal intimidation), 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), 308(5) (extortion), 309(4) (robbery), 317(2) (stolen property) of the BNS. The search for other accomplices of the accused is ongoing, said DCP Avasthy.
