World's best airline named as Qantas climbs back from low point

Virgin Australia's new partner – and part owner – Qatar Airways has been named the world's best airline for 2025 at the annual World Airline Awards for the second consecutive year. It's the ninth time the Middle Eastern carrier, which took a 25 per cent stake in Virgin earlier this year, has taken out the award. Qatar Airways also won world's best business class at the awards. Singapore Airlines came second in the rankings, followed by Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific, Dubai's Emirates and Japan's All Nippon Airways. Meanwhile, Qantas surged 10 places to be named the world's 14th best airline, up from its low point in 2024 where it fell to 24th place. It's still a far cry from its previous highs – the airline was rated in the top five as recently as 2022. Its decline followed the early departure of long-term chief executive Alan Joyce in 2023 to make way for chief financial officer Vanessa Hudson and a series of scandals including illegally sacking staff, selling fares for flights that had already been cancelled and criticisms over the availability of rewards seats for Frequent Flyer members. Virgin Australia also had better results this year, climbing from 43rd to 34th place. Jetstar, however, continued to slide, with its rating dropping from 75th last year to 88th in this year's top 100. Qatar Airways win comes just after Virgin Australian relaunched long-haul international routes using 'wet leased' Qatar Airways planes and crew. The first Virgin Australia wet-least flight departed from Sydney to Doha on Thursday last week. Qantas won eight awards at the event – announced on Tuesday at the Paris Air Show's Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace (Museum of Air and Space) – but all were regional awards for Australia/Pacific-based airlines. Its wins included best business class, best economy class, best premium economy, best catering in both business and economy, and best cabin crew.

This Popular Amtrak Line Is at Risk of Closure—What to Know

A Fort Worth, Texas, to Oklahoma City train service known as the 'Heartland Flyer' may soon end due to funding cuts. The Amtrak-operated service may end no later than Oct. 1, unless a funding disruption is may soon be the final call for a popular Southern train route. Amtrak's Heartland Flyer train line, which operates daily between Fort Worth, Texas, and Oklahoma City may soon face closure. Behind the decision to end the train route is a looming $7 million budget shortfall in funding. The Texas Department of Transportation requested the $7.05 million from the state's legislative budget, but the request was not approved, according to Amtrak. The funding helps maintain the operations of the route, along with funds from Oklahoma and ticket sales. The train departs Oklahoma City at 8:25 a.m. and arrives in Fort Worth at 12:27 p.m. The four-hour, two-minute train ride is just one hour longer than if a traveler were to drive the same route. The train makes stops in Norman, Oklahoma; Gainesville, Texas; and several other towns. 'With service that supports Texas' continued economic growth and the region's connectivity, sustaining the Heartland Flyer is essential to maintaining momentum and ensuring long term mobility in the region," Amtrak President Roger Harris said in a statement. Amtrak also points out that the service may be critical in 2026, when Dallas and Fort Worth host portions of the World Cup. The rail service says that the Heartland Flyer will provide access into the metropolitan area from surrounding communities and alleviate congestion.'I used to work in downtown Fort Worth and we got so many customers coming in for day trips on the Flyer," one person shared in the Amtrak thread on Reddit about the service. 'Big economic hit for downtown hotels and restaurants."The Amtrak-operated service has several coach cars and amenities onboard include a cafe that serves a variety of hot breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack items. Passengers are also able to make reservations for small dogs or cats to join them on the train. Travelers who have tickets on the service should check with Amtrak for any updates and monitor Amtrak's travel advisories for the latest news on the than 80,000 people purchased tickets on the Heartland Flyer in 2024, and the service also connects the region to destinations from Chicago and Los Angeles. Fayetteville OKs 1 student housing project but blocks another

Fayetteville's Planning Commission denied rezoning plans Tuesday for one student-oriented housing project, but approved development plans for another such project, the Fayetteville Flyer reported. The big picture: Enrollment has reached record-high levels at the University of Arkansas, and there aren't enough on-campus beds. About 1,200 students were placed in off-campus housing in the fall through UA contracts with apartment complexes. State of play: The Planning Commission voted 5-2 against rezoning nearly 3 acres between Hill and University avenues, where two apartment complexes and a historic home now sit, the Flyer reported. The properties have about 40 combined units, including the home that is used for short-term rentals. Chicago-based Core Spaces would like to build a student-oriented complex with 313 units and 719 bedrooms on those acres, some of which would be seven stories. Public comment before the meeting included concerns about displacing area residents and a lack of affordable housing, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. "This particular area has been so hit hard by redevelopment. I don't see the rezoning being in the best interest of the city right now," Commissioner Nick Werner said. Yes, but: The commission voted 6-1 in favor of a development plan for a student housing project along Duncan Avenue, just east of the Fayetteville High School football stadium, the Flyer reports. That plan by Austin, Texas-based Endeavor Real Estate Group calls for 294 units and 1,011 bedrooms, with a seven-story parking garage. The City Council approved rezoning for the project in August. Eleven structures with 44 units occupy the property. Commissioner Brad Payne said the plan made sense considering location, design and proximity to public transit, according to the Flyer.
