I Just Got Back From Spain And Everyone Was Wearing These Shoes - So I Caved Too

I just got back from spending a week in Madrid and while I explored the usual sights; Retiro Park, the Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor, there was another sight I was desperate to stop by - the Flabelus store. For those who have never heard of the brand, let me introduce you. Flabelus is a Spanish label who took a traditional Venetian slipper and added a Spanish twist with its plush velvet outer and delectable range of colour combinations to choose from. Its shoes are now quietly (or maybe not so quietly) taking over wardrobes (and the Grazia office too). As it turns out the story behind the brand is as sweet as its shoes. When founder Beatriz de los Mozos first dreamt of importing the classic Furlane slipper to Spain, it wasn't a grand business plan but a passionate hunch. Beatriz spoke to Grazia's Hannah Banks-Walker to explain: 'I loved the shoes, but I wanted to adapt them to the Spanish market.' The twist? Her two best friends were meant to co-found the brand with her but had to step back, 'but during that meeting we found the name: Fla (Flaminia) -Be (Beatriz) -Lus (Lucrecia) is the combination of our three names.' A few meetings with Spanish espadrille factories later, and the first Flabelus shoe was born - a slipper-espadrille that tows the line between the two. ©Instagram/@gabrielagriffith Velvet Antonia Mary Janes Black There's nothing more versatile than a black pair of Mary Janes, which is why this Flabelus pair is so popular. Wear them with jeans, a midi skirt or mini dress, the shoes will go with everything you already have in your wardrobe, but can also easily elevate any outfit too. Since then, Flabelus' cult shoes have been spotted more times than I can count on Instagram, and the brand gives a lot of credit to its socials for creating a community with one thing in common - a collective obsession with Flabelus shoes. 'We're very lucky because our clients love posting the shoes online,' Beatriz says, 'of course we work hard to place the shoes in the wardrobes of the coolest ambassadors all over the world.' And cool women they are. Billie Eilish once uploaded an Instagram post wearing them ('I nearly had a heart attack' Beatriz admits), and fashion editors across Europe are racing to get their hands on the deep burgundy Lucrecia Mary Janes - one of the bestsellers. ©Instagram/@gizemkocacinar Mary Jane Shoes Red Velvet A best-seller for Flabelus, its burgundy velvet Mary Janes are popular for good reason. With a distinctive branded sole that's made out of recycled bike tyres and a strap finished with contrast stitching and a buckle - the Flabelus Mary Janes are a shoe that will never go out of style. Wear with denim shorts or a maxi dress. My thoughts? The Flabelus Mary Janes are, honestly, one of the most comfortable pairs of shoes I've slipped my feet into (and that's not an exaggeration). I wore them while walking sometimes over 15,000 steps a day on holiday, to a Sam Fender concert, and now I'm home, the Mary Janes have also become a mainstay in my office wardrobe - styling them with anything from wide-leg trousers to midi dresses. The velvet is soft on the outside, the insole is soft on the inside and the sole (that's cleverly crafted from recycled bike tyres) is a feature I really love - especially considering the fact that most ballet flats don't really have any sort of protection between your foot and the floor. The only negative thing about Flabelus' Mary Janes is the sizing - be warned, they come up super small - even the sales associate advised me of that. I'm usually a size 4.5/5 and have quite narrow feet, so I sized up to a 6 and they fit much better than the size 5 I originally tried. If you never thought you'd see the day where the shoe you used to wear back in 2004 is suddenly everywhere once more, well I'm sorry to tell you - Mary Janes are back like they never left. The shoes have inevitably gotten a lot more chic - we can all probably be glad the stiff and patent iterations are no longer - all thanks to Flabelus' iconic and quietly luxurious velvet styles. Plus, while the shoes might look dainty, Flabelus' Mary Janes are actually made for everyday wear, whether you're heading to the office, to brunch, to the market, or even to Madrid. Aside from comfort, Flabelus tick all the boxes for sustainability, craftsmanship and - perhaps the hardest one to achieve - a sense of identity than runs deeper than any trend (I can't tell you how many people stopped me in the street to say 'are they Flabelus?' when talking about my shoes). And, as Beatriz puts it 'every pair of shoes tells a story', so, if you're going to invest in a Mary Jane this summer, make it one with soul. 4. Velvet Uta Mary Janes Green 5. Monochrome Monday: Xenon Blue

Xenon Blue is the colour of cool confidence—part sci-fi, part summer memory. From chrome nails to pool tiles, it's sharp, sleek, and undeniably magnetic. This Monday, it gets its moment. Blue has always been a shapeshifter, sometimes icy and distant, other times calm and contemplative. But Xenon Blue feels like something else entirely. It's cooler than the sky, sharper than denim. It's the colour of novelty, of clean slates and unfamiliar cities just before sunrise. This week's blue leans futuristic. Think glass towers reflecting cloudless skies, or the shimmer on a freshly done chrome manicure. It's precise, poised, and ever so slightly aloof, like a friend who's always put together but still somehow impossible to read. It's the blue of tech dreams and vintage sports cars, of pool tiles you only ever saw on holiday. The kind of blue that says 'don't touch' and 'don't look away' at the same time. This Monochrome Monday, Xenon Blue gets her moment…: Elie Saab | Silk Long Dress Cut in lustrous silk and dyed a saturated bluel, this gown draws from Elie Saab's couture vocabulary—floor-grazing, form-following, and photogenic from every angle. Flabelus | Aurora Handmade in Spain with recycled velvet and jute soles, the Aurora blends slipper-like comfort with ballroom-adjacent structure. A practical flat with aristocratic references. Dolce & Gabbana | Light Blue for Him & Her Built around Sicilian lemon and cedarwood, this fragrance duo offers crisp top notes and a clean drydown. A direct, linear scent profile with mass appeal. Oceanus | Crescent Shell Bell Sleeve Dress Fully beaded and cut with flared sleeves, this Oceanus piece merges shell motifs with red-carpet engineering. Made for movement, not subtlety. Eterna | Capri Set Majolica Digitally printed with Majolica-inspired tilework, the fabric blend offers airflow without compromising on structure. Clean tailoring underlines the pattern-heavy surface. Nashwa Jewelry | The Lucid Collection Lucid features oversized quartz and citrine set in open bezels—translucent, not ornamental. The settings are sculptural, anchored in weight and polish. Mesh Mesh | Alhambra Bag In Bahari Blue Woven in PVC, this top handle bag takes cues from Spanish architecture. Bahari Blue references both the material and the coast it nods to. Sara El Emary | The Perfect Denim Collection Stitched in Cairo with contrast topstitching and selvedge-weight denim, this collection reworks classic silhouettes through a local production lens. Tailoring over trend.

Spanish Brand Flabelus Finds Its Footing in Cairo

After hosting a quiet dinner in Downtown Cairo's Mazeej, Flabelus is beginning to find its footing in the region. Apr 17, 2025 Flabelus doesn't overexplain itself. Founded in Spain in 2020, the footwear label has built its language through velvet Mary Janes, structured espadrilles, and silhouettes that feel borrowed from a bookshelf rather than a trend cycle. Each pair is named after a literary character. Each one feels like it belongs to someone with taste and time. This year, that language reached Cairo. The brand hosted a dinner at Mazeej - intimate, precise, and curated with the right crowd in mind. The shoes sat alongside conversation, surrounded by people who read context as fluently as they do form. In a video interview with SceneStyled, Pilar Oraá, the brand's PR and communications lead, spoke about the brand's evolving relationship with the Middle East and how Flabelus is looking to be part of the region's long-term creative ecosystem.
