Zayed Khan on why Akshay Kumar-Sanjay Dutt's Rs 100-crore film Blue flopped at box office: 'Hollywood's best action directors were involved...Kylie Minogue featured...'

Zayed Khan reflects on 'Blue,' acknowledging its ambition and star power with Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt, but also its failure to connect with audiences despite a massive budget. He attributes this to a disconnect between the screenplay and execution, hindering its potential as a franchise. Creative differences and storytelling issues ultimately led to its underperformance. Years after stepping away from the limelight, Zayed Khan has revisited one of his most ambitious projects—Blue. In a candid chat, the actor opened up about the film's massive scale, what it promised, and why it ultimately failed to deliver. The film also featured Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt in lead roles. On Siddharth Kannan's podcast, Zayed reflected on Blue as a film that was ahead of its time. He likened its concept to an early version of the Fast & Furious franchise and believed it had all the elements—slick action, high production value, and a star-studded cast including Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta , and Katrina Kaif—to turn into a successful franchise. Despite its star-studded cast and ambitious scale, Blue fell flat at the box office. The film featured Katrina Kaif in a cameo and included extensive underwater sequences, but it ultimately failed to strike a chord with audiences. He further attributed Blue's failure to a gap between the screenplay and its on-screen execution. He felt the film didn't translate the script's potential effectively, pointing out that even the most visually impressive scenes fall flat if the narrative lacks cohesion. For him, the core issue lay in the storytelling—emphasizing that impactful action stems from a strong screenplay, not just high-octane visuals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo Blue was originally envisioned as the start of a franchise, with director Anthony D'Souza planning a sequel titled Aasman in 2012. However, the follow-up never took off. Zayed Khan hinted at behind-the-scenes challenges, suggesting that creative differences among team members may have played a role—though he noted such clashes are not unusual in filmmaking. Made on a then-unheard-of budget of ₹100 crore, Blue was a lavish production that spared no expense. Zayed Khan noted that the film brought in top Hollywood action directors and even featured international pop star Kylie Minogue , praising the team for delivering high production value despite the film's eventual underperformance. Zayed Khan began his acting career in 2003 with Chura Liya Hai Tumne, but it was his role in the 2004 hit Main Hoon Na alongside Shah Rukh Khan that brought him widespread recognition. Despite a strong start, his career lost momentum over time, eventually prompting him to step away from the spotlight.

Zayed Khan says he felt his flop Blue was ‘Fast & Furious ka baap' while reading script: ‘We spent Rs 100 cr on it, Kylie Minogue sang'

Unlike his cousin Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan is still waiting for a comeback on screen. Both the actors were part of some memorable films back in the 2000s before their careers began deteriorating. Fardeen has made a comeback now with Heeramandi and Khel Khel Mein last year, and the hit Housefull 5 this year. But Zayed's last stint was the TV show Haasil in 2018. Zayed feels he did films which were way ahead of their time, which explains why they didn't work at the box office back then. He specifically named Leena Yadav's 2005 psychological drama Shabd, his home production and Sahil Sangha's 2011 romantic comedy Love Breakups Zindagi, and Anthony D'Souza's 2009 action adventure dud Blue as films ahead of their time. 'If you'd read the script of Blue, you'd have felt ye Fast & Furious ka baap hai (this is superior to Fast & Furious). It was fantastically done, and I felt Blue is really going to break all barriers. With that cast — Akshay, Sanju, Lara, and Katrina — I felt it's going to go in the direction of a franchise,' said Zayed on Siddharth Kanan's podcast. Produced by Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision, Blue starred Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta, and Zayed, with Katrina Kaif in a cameo. With large portions shot underwater, the film bombed at the box office. 'The failure surprised me because I don't think we caught the script like how it was written. I had told Anthony. You can shoot amazing things and feel like a badshah (king), but when you don't stitch the narrative correctly with thehrao (poise)… the action scenes can be done well without even a fist being raised, it can all be in the screenplay. There was a difference between cup and lip, of how that should've translated on screen,' argued Zayed. Blue was indeed intended to be a franchise as D'Souza had even revealed his plans to make a sequel titled Aasman in 2012. However, Zayed hinted that there were creative differences between the cast, particularly Kumar, and the makers on the sets of Blue. He said, 'I wouldn't want to say because there were some creative differences between people on set, but doesn't that happen all the time?' Zayed also revealed that the makers left no stones unturned while making the film. 'We'd spent Rs 100 crore then, it was unheard of. And I have to say they did a fantastic job at the production, with the best of action directors from Hollywood and Kylie Minogue coming in,' recalled Zayed. The popular Australian singer crooned the dance song 'Chiggy Wiggy' alongside Sonu Nigam in Blue, and also featured in the song alongside Kumar. Later, he clarified he was joking about the same.

Ryan Phillippe's New Drama Series Hits #3 on Prime & the Trailer Is Packed with Emotion and Adrenaline

With new shows dropping every day, it's easy for a few to slip through the cracks—or in this case, past my eyeballs. That said, it didn't take long for Motorheads, a new original series from Prime Video, to catch my attention. I was actually logging in to check out the new thriller The Better Sister (mini-review on that here), but a quick scroll through the platform's Top 10 list stopped me in my tracks. Sitting pretty at #3? Ryan Phillippe. Naturally, I clicked. And that's how I discovered Motorheads. Sabrina Lantos/Prime Video The series is a high-octane, coming-of-age drama set in a fading Rust Belt town. It centers around a group of teens who bond over street racing, love, heartbreak and the thrill of getting behind the wheel for the very first time. Think Fast & Furious energy with a high school twist. Phillippe plays Logan Maddox, a former NASCAR driver turned auto body shop owner. He's joined by Nathalie Kelley (The Vampire Diaries, Dynasty), who plays an ER nurse returning to her hometown of Ironwood, Pennsylvania with her teenage twins. You'll also spot Michael Cimino from Love, Victor and Never Have I Ever, who plays Zac—Samantha's reluctant Brooklyn-born son adjusting to small-town life. Rounding out the cast are Melissa Collazo, Uriah Shelton and Nicolas Cantu. The trailer opens with a line that sets the tone: 'There are two types of people in this world—those who hit the brakes and those who hit the gas. The question you have to ask yourself is 'Which one are you?'' And honestly? It's kind of a vibe. Also, sidenote: when did Ryan Phillippe's voice get that deep? The last time I really remember hearing his voice was when I rewatched 1999's Cruel Intentions—he was around 25 then. So yeah, hearing how deep it is now definitely caught me off guard. Voice surprise aside, Motorheads looks like an easy, engaging watch with just the right mix of drama, fast cars and heartfelt moments. All 10 episodes are streaming now on Prime Video—will you be watching? Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox? Last Updated: Yung Sammy & BBB's new track Top Boys blends Delhi car culture with AI FX, bold desi bars, and a game-changing music video. Watch the future of Indian hip-hop. South Asian rap's rising powerhouse YUNG SAMMY has once again ignited the scene, this time joining forces with fellow fire-spitter BBB for a genre-bending track that pushes boundaries like never before. Their latest release, Top Boys, isn't just a song—it's a movement. Accompanied by a visually arresting music video packed with drifting supercars, gritty realism, and cutting-edge AI-generated effects, the track marks a bold evolution in Indian hip-hop storytelling. Filmed on the vibrant streets of New Delhi, Top Boys blends the swagger of street culture with a futuristic cinematic edge. The music video is a high-octane visual experience featuring high-performance vehicles spinning through smoke and metal, but it's the addition of AI-generated morphs and surreal effects that elevate it into something truly groundbreaking. As one fan put it, 'It's like Fast & Furious met Blade Runner—and then took a detour through South Asia." View this post on Instagram A post shared by YUNG SAMMY (@yungsammy___) Musically, Top Boys hits hard with slick, bass-heavy production and cinematic instrumentation, creating a sonic landscape that matches its visual punch. YUNG SAMMY and BBB bring fierce energy to their verses, trading bars that exude ambition, confidence, and cultural pride. Lyrically sharp and rhythmically infectious, the track speaks directly to the aspirations of India's next-gen artists and global desi youth. 'This one's all about UP16—when we say Top Boys, we're talking about the ones running the city," says YUNG SAMMY. 'It's a flex on our hustle, our come-up, and where we're at now. For the clubs, the streets, the Hip Hop heads. And we're repping our code hard." Sammy's signature flair shines through as he switches accents, mixing African slang with Hindi—a nod to his Nigerian-Indian identity and his commitment to breaking language and cultural barriers through music. For BBB, the track is deeply personal. 'It wasn't just another studio collab. Top Boys is a celebration of friendship, growth, and everything we've seen the music scene become. From day one to now—it's all in there." Released under the trailblazing DESI TRILL label, co-founded by Shabz Naqvi and Ty-Ty Smith and globally distributed by Universal Music Group, Top Boys stands as a shining example of the label's mission to merge South Asian sonic heritage with global hip-hop. 'YUNG SAMMY is growing fast," says Naqvi. 'He's putting Delhi on the global map—and with Top Boys, he's not just representing, he's leading. This is what the future of Indian hip-hop looks like." YUNG SAMMY continues to rise as one of the most unique voices in the Indian music scene. Born in Nigeria and raised in India, he's the first Nigerian-Hindi rapper to feature on Charlie Sloth's iconic Fire In The Booth platform on Apple Music. With previous hits like G Class and All In gaining traction and his debut EP In the Building already making waves, Top Boys further cements his place in the hip-hop vanguard. As DESI TRILL aims to revolutionize what Desi hip-hop can sound and look like, Top Boys arrives not just as a track—but as a cultural statement, revving up engines and expectations alike.
