Tigers Make Big Announcement to Celebrate Historic Start to Season
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Tigers are off to their best start after 70 games — slightly more than 40 percent of the season — since 2006. That was the year the Tigers returned to the World Series after a 21-year absence. Despite losing to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 in the Fall Classic, the Tigers won 95 games that season. After 70 they stood at 46-24. This year, the Tigers are just one game behind that 2006 pace, one of two teams with a 45-25 record, the best in MLB. That's also 11 games ahead of where the Tigers were last year, at 34-36. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 08: Gleyber Torres #25, Wenceel Pérez #46, Riley Greene #31 and Parker Meadows #22 of the Detroit Tigers celebrate their win against the Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park on June 08,... DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 08: Gleyber Torres #25, Wenceel Pérez #46, Riley Greene #31 and Parker Meadows #22 of the Detroit Tigers celebrate their win against the Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park on June 08, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. MoreThe only other 45-25 team after 70 games is the New York Mets. But there is one big difference between the two teams. The Mets are paying heavily for their 45 wins, with a payroll of $324.2 million — second highest in MLB, roughly $12.6 million behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Tigers payroll? At $144.1 million, Detroit ranks 18th of all big league clubs and pays out just 44 percent of what the Mets are spending. What accounts for the Tigers' surprising success? Any number of factors, of course, but the most important has to be pitching. At 3.22 Detroit boasts the fourth-best ERA in MLB and second-lowest in the American League. Led by 28-year-old lefty Tarik Skubal, last season's AL Cy Young Award winner with a 1.99 ERA in a league-leading 90 1/3 innings pitched, Tigers starters have the second-best ERA in the majors, at 3.03, behind only the Mets (2.79). And while their overall bullpen ERA is an 11th-ranked 3.54, the Tigers have three relievers who have thrown at least 30 innings with an ERA under 2.00. They are Will Vest (1.83), Tommy Kahnle (1.50), and Brant Hurter (1.75). More MLB: Tigers Urged To Reunite With Familiar Face By Former MLB Executive The Tigers' success extends beyond the baseball field, according to an announcement by the team on Friday. The red-hot club is drawing big TV numbers. "Tigers games on FanDuel Sports Network Detroit rank as some of the most-watched programming across baseball this year," the team said in the announcement. "Through June 9, average household impressions on our linear television broadcasts have jumped 82 percent compared to the same point last season, the largest such increase for any MLB team (excluding Toronto)." The Tigers' local TV ratings, an average of 4.46 per game, rank second among all MLB teams. Streaming numbers are also up — way up — according to the Tigers' announcement, with a jump of 93 percent compared to last season. The Tigers open a three-game inter-league series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday at Comerica Park. Hurter will get the start, only his third of the season, in what is slated as a bullpen game for Detroit. More MLB: Brewers Sensational Pitching Prospect Has Bizarre, Mind-Blowing MLB Debut

2025 MLB odds: Bettors backing Detroit Tigers to win AL Pennant
With their 44-25 record, the Detroit Tigers are currently one of the best teams in Major League Baseball, sitting atop the standings in the AL Central. And with all the success Detroit has had so far this season, bettors have taken note. At BetMGM, the Tigers' odds to win the World Series opened at +4000. So a $10 bet on Opening Day would have pocketed $410 total if the Tigers end up winning the Fall Classic. They're now all the way down to +800, where a $10 bet would only win $90 total. But there's more. In World Series futures at BetMGM, the Tigers have the third-highest ticket at 8.2%, behind the Dodgers (14.1%) and the Phillies (9.3%). In the AL Central, they're the heavy favorites at -600, but also have the highest ticket (32.7%) and the highest handle (39.5%). When it comes to the team with the shortest odds to win the AL pennant, that's the Yankees at +200. But it's the Tigers with the highest ticket (24%), the highest handle (23.6%) and the team that is BetMGM's biggest liability. Let's take a closer look at Detroit's odds at BetMGM as of June 12. Tigers to have most regular-season wins: +450 (bet $10 to win $55 total) World Series: +800 (bet $10 to win $90 total) To win AL: +300 (bet $10 to win $40 total) To win AL Central: -550 (bet $10 to win $11.82 total) AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal: -220 (bet $10 to win $14.55 total) AL MVP winner Tarik Skubal: +10000 (bet $10 to win $1,010 total) So are the Tigers really worth backing, after barely sneaking into the 2024 postseason with an 86-76 record? FOX Sports MLB writer Rowan Kavner is "starting to believe," and that's largely because of Spencer Torkelson. "[He] looks primed for a career year for a team that desperately needed more infield pop from somewhere," Kavner wrote. "I don't think this is a top-five team, but I do think this is a top-10 team and the best club in the AL Central." FOX Sports' Deesha Thosar echoed a similar sentiment. "The Tigers look like the real deal, especially because they're the only team in the AL Central with a positive run differential," she noted. "Detroit's only legitimate threat to win the division is Cleveland, and even then, the way the Tigers are playing right now, I'm expecting them to enjoy another trip to the postseason. "The Tigers have a top-10 offense in baseball in terms of wRC+, and if they can sustain that level of dominance on both sides of the ball, then they might just have a deeper playoff run in their bones." Hypothetical Trade Outline Sees Yankees Acquiring Cy Young Winner At Deadline
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees lost Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery before the season began, and now Heavy MLB's Cole Shelton believes reigning Cy Young winner Chris Sale could be the answer for the Yankees as the season closes in on the All-Star break. After a miserable start, the Atlanta Braves' season has not taken off since the return of their superstar Ronald Acuña Jr. They entered Thursday in fourth place in the National League East. MLB Analyst Chris Rose believes Sale could headline the market of starting pitchers in late July. MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JUNE 09: Chris Sale #51 of the Atlanta Braves throws a pitch in the first inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on June 09, 2025 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JUNE 09: Chris Sale #51 of the Atlanta Braves throws a pitch in the first inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on June 09, 2025 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Photo bySale was riddled with injuries with the Boston Red Sox, but after an outstanding season with the Braves last year, his career has been set back on track, and with a 2.79 ERA and 107 strikeouts is likely to be called about if the Braves are unable to correct course . Shelton proposed the Yankees send two top-10 prospects to the Braves in return for Sale. The Yankees would part ways with outfielder Spencer Jones and left-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge. If Sale is on the market, plenty of teams that are shopping for pitching will be calling for him. That reality, combined with a team option to keep Sale next season as well, will likely drive the price up. The Yankees are hungry for another World Series championship, and after falling short in the Fall Classic last season, they could find themselves more aggressive in the trade market than normal this season. Yankees will look different in first rematch with Dodgers since World Series loss
Yankees will look different in first rematch with Dodgers since World Series loss The last time the Yankees were at Dodger Stadium, they lost Game 2 of the 2024 World Series, 4-2. The defeat, which featured a gem from the Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a clunker from Carlos Rodón and a home run from Juan Soto, put the Yankees in a 2-0 hole in the Fall Classic. They went on to lose their first World Series since 2009 in five games in sloppy fashion, sparking an offseason of trash talk from the backend of Los Angeles' roster as the Bombers rebuilt their own. Advertisement 'I don't like hearing that,' Aaron Boone said of the jabs this spring, 'but the reality is we didn't play our best in the series and they won. So they have that right to say whatever. Hopefully we're in that position this year and handle things with a little more class.' With the playoffs still months away, the stakes won't be as high when the first-place clubs begin a three-game series in L.A. on Friday. Still, the Yankees, fresh off a sweep over the Angels after a 1-0 win on Wednesday, would love to extract some regular season revenge with a group that looks noticeably different than the one that the Dodgers knocked down on baseball's biggest stage. Gone is Soto, who spurned the Yankees – and lightly flirted with the Dodgers – before signing a record-setting contract with the Mets. The Yankees also moved on from Gleyber Torres, Anthony Rizzo, Alex Verdugo and Nestor Cortes, who all played large – if not necessarily successful – parts in the 2024 World Series. Giancarlo Stanton, meanwhile, has yet to play this season due to tennis elbow injuries after terrorizing his hometown Dodgers and other playoff opponents last October. The Yankees will also be without Gerrit Cole, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Luis Gil, Oswaldo Cabrera and Fernando Cruz, among others, this weekend. Advertisement After losing the Soto sweepstakes, the Yankees pivoted to Max Fried, Devin Williams, Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger. Fried, the biggest and first splash following Soto's departure, has been sensational, recording a league-best 1.29 ERA over 11 starts and leading the Yankees' rotation with Cole sidelined by Tommy John surgery. A childhood Dodgers fan who went to high school in L.A., Fried is scheduled to start the first game of the series. Williams, meanwhile, has had a bumpy tenure in New York thus far. Initially under the impression he'd be traded to the Dodgers over the winter, the reliever started the season as the Yankees' closer, only to pitch his way out of the role. Williams has mostly been effective since, though he wobbled his way through his first save opportunity in a month on Tuesday in Anaheim. Goldschmidt, 37 and coming off the worst year of his career, has been a bargain for the Yankees, hitting .347 with five home runs and 27 RBI while stabilizing first base. Meanwhile, Bellinger, who won an MVP Award with the Dodgers in 2019, has found his footing after a rocky start, hitting .318 with five homers and 16 RBI this month. Advertisement Together, the two veterans have helped lengthen a post-Soto lineup that is also now reliant on – and getting significant contributions from – youngsters Ben Rice and Jasson Domínguez. Of course, Aaron Judge's continued otherworldly performance has also helped the Yankees put together one of baseball's best offenses. That lineup will go up against a pitching staff that is not at full strength, as L.A. starters Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki and Blake Snell – the latter two being of interest to the Yankees this past offseason – are on the injured list. The Dodgers' bullpen is also missing Kirby Yates, Evan Phillips, Michael Kopech, Brusdar Graterol and Blake Treinen. They've had their own closing issues, too, as Tanner Scott, signed to a four-year, $72 million deal over the winter, has allowed nine earned runs over his last five appearances. With the Dodgers down more than a few pitchers, Tony Gonsolin, Landon Knack and Yamamoto – pitching like an early Cy Young contender – are slated to start in the series. Advertisement Fried, also making an early bid for pitching's most prestigious hardware, will be followed by red-hot rookie Will Warren. The Yankees have yet to announce their Sunday starter, though their options are Rodón, pitching like an All-Star and looking for redemption at Chavez Ravine, or ex-Dodger Ryan Yarbrough, a swingman who has been a revelation for the Yankees' rotation recently. The Dodgers also have one of MLB's better offenses. Like the Yankees, they rank in the top-three in runs, home runs, wRC+ and fWAR.
