OGW detected in face recognition system in Anantnag, nabbed

Ahead of the forthcoming Amarnath Yatra, the Facial Recognition System (FRS) deployed by Anantnag district police at Langanbal Naka detected an over ground worker (OGW) on Thursday. Police said that the individual, a resident of Seer Hamdan (police station Mattan jurisdiction) with a prior FIR registered in 2005, was working as a carpenter. He was subsequently handed over to the Pahalgam police station for further legal action, they added. 'This swift interception highlights the impact of technology-driven policing and is to send a clear deterrent message to miscreants as SANJY-2025 approaches,' Police spokesman said, adding that Anantnag district police has already enhanced electronic surveillance along all yatra corridors to ensure a safe and seamless pilgrimage experience. Amarnath Yatra: Facial Recognition System Flags First Suspect, Alleged OGW Detained Langanbal

In view of the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2025, the Anantnag Police has enhanced security measures to ensure a safe and peaceful pilgrimage. As part of these initiatives, high-resolution Facial Recognition System (FRS) cameras have been installed at multiple locations along the Pahalgam-to-cave route, including Langanbal Naka — a key checkpoint on the Yatra path. Today, during routine surveillance using the newly installed FRS, the system successfully flagged a suspicious individual whose facial data matched entries in the security database. Upon immediate verification and investigation, the individual was identified as an Over Ground Worker (OGW) affiliated with a terrorist outfit, according to a statement by Anantnag Police on X. The suspect was promptly taken into custody, and a detailed investigation is currently underway to ascertain his links and any potential threats. This successful identification and detention underscore the effectiveness of the Facial Recognition System in preemptive threat detection and maintaining public safety. The FRS, part of the enhanced security framework for the Yatra, has been deployed along the Pahalgam route and other paths leading to the holy cave. The system provides real-time alerts — including a hooter at the surveillance center — to identify blacklisted individuals, such as active terrorists and suspected OGWs, by analyzing facial features against a secure database. This technology-driven approach is aimed at ensuring a secure pilgrimage by deterring potential threats and strengthening surveillance across the Yatra corridors. The operation highlights the Anantnag Police's broader efforts to leverage technology for public safety during high-profile events like the Amarnath Yatra, especially amid heightened security concerns in the region.

Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir to go hi-tech..., pilgrims to be guarded by...,

Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir to go hi-tech..., pilgrims to be guarded by..., Amarnath Yatra arrangements: After pahalgam terror attack conducting of smooth and safe annual Amarnath Yatra became a major challenge for government. Home minister Amit Shah himself took two review meetings and security, and other facilities were discussed and finalised. Apart from major security arrangements, Artificial intelligence (AI) will be guarding the pilgrims during the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu Kashmir. The introduction of the Facial Recognition System (FRS) for the Amarnath Yatra in 2025 marked a significant enhancement in the security framework for the annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. The system aimed to enhance pilgrim safety by identifying potential threats, such as terrorists, overground workers, or other blacklisted individuals, in real-time using facial recognition technology integrated with surveillance cameras. The FRS is deployed for the first time during the Amarnath Yatra. The system is specifically introduced along the Pahalgam and Baltal routes, and on every camp of pilgrims from Jammu to Kashmir. The primary objective is to bolster security by identifying potential threats, including suspected terrorists, overground workers, or other blacklisted individuals, in real-time. The FRS utilises advanced surveillance cameras equipped with facial recognition technology to scan and match faces against a database of known suspects. The system is integrated with images of active terrorists and other individuals on security watchlists, enabling immediate alerts to security forces if a match is detected. This real-time identification capability enhances the ability to respond swiftly to potential threats during the high-traffic pilgrimage. The introduction of FRS reflects a shift toward technology-driven policing to counter Terror threats.

Kashmir Reawakens: 16 Tourist Spots Reopened After Pahalgam Terror Attack

From local residents to tourist traders and visitors, everyone has welcomed the reopening of Kashmir. The Valley is buzzing with activity as 16 out of the 48 closed tourist spots have reopened following improved security conditions after the deadly Pahalgam attack. The clouds of terror have begun to lift as 16 tourist destinations — eight in the Kashmir Valley and eight in the Jammu region — have been reopened. These spots had been closed after the April 22, 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. This phased reopening, announced by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, aims to revive tourism and restore public confidence, as the attack had severely impacted the region's economy. Reopened Destinations Include In Kashmir: Betaab Valley, the park near Pahalgam Bazaar, Verinag Garden, Kokernag Garden, Achabal Garden (Anantnag district), Badamwari Park, Duck Park (near Nigeen Lake), and Taqdeer Park (near Hazratbal, Srinagar). In Jammu: Sarthal and Dhagar (Kathua), Devipindi, Siad Baba, and Sula Park (Reasi), Guldanda and Jai Valley (Doda), and Pancheri (Udhampur). The decision has been met with enthusiasm from tourists and locals alike, seen as a sign of returning normalcy. The upcoming Amarnath Yatra is also expected to significantly boost the region's tourism sector. Tourist traders and locals, especially in Pahalgam and Srinagar, have expressed relief, as their livelihoods were heavily affected by the closures. Pony owners, shikara operators, and vendors are hopeful about regaining lost income. Many had been urging the administration to reopen destinations, and now that some have, a sense of relief is widespread. Manzoor Pakhtoon, head of the Kashmir Houseboat Industry, remarked, 'We had said if destinations remain closed, it sends a negative signal. We thank the administration—it's a welcome step. We hope more places reopen soon. Registrations for the Amarnath Yatra and train arrivals show signs of tourism picking up again.' Security Measures Stepped Up To address safety concerns, the administration has implemented a full spectrum of security measures. This includes: Deployment of CRPF and Jammu & Kashmir Police at all tourist sites Tourist Police Units at each location to support visitors High-resolution CCTV and FRS (Facial Recognition System) cameras at entry/exit points, parking areas, main roads, and crowded spots 24/7 surveillance with motion detection and night vision Central monitoring rooms set up in each district Facial recognition databases integrated with blacklisted individuals to proactively flag threats Boosts to Tourism Efforts to restore confidence include the launch of the Vande Bharat Express connecting Kashmir to Katra, rising tourist footfall, and recent visits by a parliamentary committee to assess the region's security. Promotional efforts, including tourism vouchers and social media campaigns, are also in full swing. While 32 tourist destinations remain closed, officials have confirmed they will reopen in a phased manner based on ongoing security reviews in the coming weeks.

How Crime Kundli may help cops end dual lives

New Delhi: has made a significant move to step up its crime control capabilities with the introduction of a consolidated system that integrates data points, including biometric information, to provide a comprehensive platform to its personnel for accessing information on criminals. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This web-based desktop software, named Crime Kundli, enables police personnel across all districts and units to access a vast repository of data on criminals, including seven types of biometric data: fingerprints, face, iris, voice, handwriting, footprint, and tattoos. The inclusion of voice, footprint, and full iris scan features will further aid in identifying suspects, sources said. "The system's advanced search and upload features will allow for efficient matching of biometric data, reducing the likelihood of false identities and duplicate records. Each individual will be assigned a unique ID number, streamlining records and eliminating duplicates, even if they use multiple aliases," said a senior police officer. Earlier, duplication issues often arose when the same criminal's data was entered multiple times under different aliases or modified identities. "The system's linkage with the Facial Recognition System (FRS) will further enhance its capabilities. Using FRS and iris scans, even partially visible faces of suspects can now yield potential matches," another senior police officer said, adding, detailed information on a person's modus operandi will also be available, enabling police to anticipate and prevent crimes more effectively. When contacted, Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Devesh Chandra Srivastava said, "The goal is to bring in more reliability, accuracy and speed so that we can correctly identify and track criminals using latest technology in day-to-day policing." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The platform is now being used by police personnel and units across the city to maintain and update the records of the criminals in the city. With enhanced search and upload functions, police personnel can now use specific keywords to identify patterns and link them to individuals using biometric matches. Police said this will ensure precise identification of a suspect by cross-referencing traits with biometric data. "This consolidated system will undoubtedly prove to be a valuable tool for Delhi Police, enabling them to stay one step ahead of criminals and make the city a safer place for its residents. With this cutting-edge technology, police can now access a wealth of information on criminals in one platform, leading to better crime control and prevention," said a senior police officer. Additional biometric features like voice recognition and footprint analysis further aim to strengthen the system, ensuring that even if criminals attempt to change their identity, their core physical traits remain traceable. Each individual is assigned to a unique identification number, eliminating redundancy and enabling seamless tracking within the criminal database.
