Amarnath Yatra arrangements: After pahalgam terror attack conducting of smooth and safe annual Amarnath Yatra became a major challenge for government. Home minister Amit Shah himself took two review meetings and security, and other facilities were discussed and finalised.
Apart from major security arrangements, Artificial intelligence (AI) will be guarding the pilgrims during the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu Kashmir. The introduction of the Facial Recognition System (FRS) for the Amarnath Yatra in 2025 marked a significant enhancement in the security framework for the annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir.
The system aimed to enhance pilgrim safety by identifying potential threats, such as terrorists, overground workers, or other blacklisted individuals, in real-time using facial recognition technology integrated with surveillance cameras. The FRS is deployed for the first time during the Amarnath Yatra.
The system is specifically introduced along the Pahalgam and Baltal routes, and on every camp of pilgrims from Jammu to Kashmir. The primary objective is to bolster security by identifying potential threats, including suspected terrorists, overground workers, or other blacklisted individuals, in real-time.
The FRS utilises advanced surveillance cameras equipped with facial recognition technology to scan and match faces against a database of known suspects. The system is integrated with images of active terrorists and other individuals on security watchlists, enabling immediate alerts to security forces if a match is detected. This real-time identification capability enhances the ability to respond swiftly to potential threats during the high-traffic pilgrimage. The introduction of FRS reflects a shift toward technology-driven policing to counter Terror threats.

MDMK will seek more seats but not at the cost of coalition, says Durai Vaiko
The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) will seek a higher share of seats in the upcoming elections but without compromising on the collective interests of the DMK-led alliance, said the party's principal secretary and Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko on Saturday. 'A party must win at least 12 Assembly seats to secure official recognition. We certainly want to grow and will seek more seats, but any decision will be taken in a manner that does not disrupt alliance unity,' he said speaking to reporters here. Commenting on recent remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the English language, he criticised the BJP's stance as regressive. 'It is bilingual education and English that have enabled Tamils to find employment across the world. The BJP insists on a third language in schools, yet questions the role of English — this contradiction is unconvincing,' he said.

Foremost priority is to ensure forest lease holders receive entitlements: Chhattisgarh CM
Even as joint security forces continue operations across several States to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah's resolve on a 'Naxal-Mukt Bharat' by March 2026, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said that his government's 'foremost priority is to ensure that every forest land lease holding family received their rightful entitlements'. An official told The Hindu that this flows from the government's thinking that 'there is a clear correlation between FRA (Forest Rights Act) enforcement and reduced Naxal activity'. The Forest Rights Act, 2006, recognises and vests forest rights with Scheduled Tribes and forest-dwelling communities. 'The approach is holistic, combining rights recognition, economic empowerment, and security measures to strengthen tribal self-governance and counter extremism,' the official said, adding, 'Reports from the ground indicate that in districts with robust FRA implementation, Naxal recruitment has dropped. Gram Sabhas now resolve many local disputes without Maoist interference, showcasing the positive impact of tribal self-governance.' In response to questions on FRA implementation in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled State, the Chief Minister told The Hindu that his government had streamlined the 'fauti naamantaran' — the process of transferring ownership of land after the death of the leaseholder as well, 'so that legal heirs face no hurdles'. 'By simplifying and streamlining the process of 'fauti naamantaran', we have made sure that after the demise of a lease holder, their legal heirs face no hurdles in claiming their rightful ownership,' Mr. Sai said. Also Read | Forest rights concerns could influence electoral results in nearly a third of constituencies, says study 'With their names now officially recorded, they not only become the lawful owners of the land but also gain easier access to various government schemes and benefits,' he said, adding that the streamlined process had 'provided forest rights holders with a new foundation of economic, social, and familial security'. 'It has boosted the confidence of our rural and tribal communities and strengthened their trust in the government,' the CM said. This thinking is also reflected in the State government's 2025 policy for the surrender and rehabilitation of Naxals and victims of violence, which has provisions to give land titles, financial aid, and livelihood assistance to surrendered Naxals and victims, the State government official further said. 'By recognising land and forest rights, the government has addressed long-standing tribal grievances, which Naxals previously exploited for recruitment. In conflict-prone areas such as Abujhmad, granting habitat rights has strengthened trust between tribal communities and the administration,' the official said. The State government has especially focused on granting community rights titles under the FRA, data showed, with officials adding that Chhattisgarh had been granted over 4,300 Community Forest Resource Rights (CFRR) titles in the past 1.5 years. Public data from FRA implementation further showed that while, as of 2018, individual rights titles under the FRA were more than twice the number of community titles granted, the dataset for the last one year showed community titles outnumbering individual titles. This comes in the backdrop of the Union government trying to give a fresh push to the implementation of the FRA across the country by funding the setting up of over 300 FRA cells to facilitate the law's implementation. This effort is the first time the Union government is setting up mechanisms to help in the implementation of the law, which was hitherto largely in the domain of State governments.

People will give punishment to DMK in 2026 assembly elections: AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami
COIMBATORE: AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday said that people of the State will give punishment to the DMK in the upcoming 2026 election through the poll results. 'We have already condemned the DMK minister and DMK functionaries for their abusive speech. As far as the DMK is concerned, there is a commotion among the people of Tamil Nadu as the anti-people regime is in progress. To hide it, DMK functionaries are in the habit of spreading abusive messages and speech in public meetings and social media handles, and for this, the people of the state will give punishment to the DMK in the 2026 assembly election results,' said Edappadi K Palaniswami while addressing the media. Responding to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement that a time would come when those speaking English in the country would 'feel ashamed', Edappadi K Palaniswami said that Amit Shah had just shared his opinion. "Amit Shah shared that on the basis that the people are giving importance to English instead of their mother tongue, and the mother tongue is important for each of them," he said. EPS also said that the former AIADMK minister and Deputy Propaganda secretary K Pandirajan had clearly explained on Keezhadi excavation during AIADMK rule, both before and after the demise of former CM J Jayalalithaa. EPS has also extended his greetings to the organisers (Hindu Munnani) of the Lord Murugan conference being held at Madurai. 'It is a democratic right for an organisation to worship favourite gods and based on that, an organisation is organising a religious conference for Lord Murugan in Madurai,' he said. Speaking about International Yoga Day, EPS said, 'Yoga activity is important for physical and mental health and wellbeing, and I greet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for organising the event.
