Goals galore for Aussie hockey aces in Pro League romps

Australia's national hockey teams have enjoyed another stand-out day in the FIH Pro League with the Kookaburras continuing their title defence by hitting Ireland for six in Belgium before the Hockeyroos outclassed their English hosts 3-0 in London.
The men's team were the first in action on Wednesday in Antwerp, the Kookaburras brushing aside Ireland 6-1 - exactly the same score they'd beaten them by 24 hours earlier in Antwerp and a fifth consecutive victory on their European sojourn.
Their unbeaten European run has seen the team shoot up six places to second in the standings, but still nine points adrift of strong tournament favourites, the Netherlands.
Australia were once again in a different class to a struggling Irish outfit, with two goals from Nathan Ephraums, and further strikes from Jeremy Hayward, Craig Marais, Davis Atkin and Ky Willott - courtesy of a brilliant volleyed assist from Tom Craig - sealing the most comfortable of victories.
"It was nice to back up last night's match with another win. The Irish are very tough and to score six goals against a team like that is a great result," said Marais.
"We've got a reasonably young group and there's not much fear. We've been given the licence from Mark Hager and the coaching staff to play with freedom and you can see that in a lot of the boys, everyone's taking the game on, everyone's supporting each other and it's really enjoyable."
On a sweltering afternoon at the Lee Valley Centre in London, with temperatures nearing 36°C at pushback, Australia's Hockeyroos were this time too hot for their hosts, just 24 hours after losing 1-0 to the same opponents.
The Hockeyroos broke the deadlock in the second quarter, with Moreton Bay's Jade Smith lashing home a blistering finish - her fifth goal in 12 appearances since making her debut in February.
They doubled their advantage on a counter-attack in the 38th minute with Grace Stewart netting her 38th international goal before Greta Hayes sealed the win in the final quarter.
"The team has been putting in a lot of effort behind closed doors, so to come out here and get the win is a huge result," said player of the match Tatum Stewart.
The Hockeyroos are now fourth in the table, but well adrift of the top three, with the Netherlands already crowned champions ahead of Argentina and Belgium.

Mary Fowler shortlisted for PFA Player of the Year gong

Australian star Mary Fowler is on the six-person shortlist for the Professional Footballers' Association Women's Player of the Year award. Voted for by fellow professional players, Fowler was included, along with teammate Yui Hasegawa, following her most productive Women's Super League season to date for Manchester City. They are joined by Alessia Russo and Mariona Caldentey from European champions Arsenal, Erin Cuthbert from WSL champions Chelsea, and Manchester United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Also in the running for the PFA Young Player of the Year gong, 22-year-old Fowler picked up six goals and seven assists in the campaign, and her two goal involvements in four successive WSL matches set a competition record in February. Despite having her season cut short by injury in April, the Matildas star was the only City player to reach double figures in goals and assists in all competitions. Japan international midfielder Hasegawa - who won City's Player of the Season award - completed the most dribbles in the WSL across the campaign and was involved in more shot-ending sequences than any other player in her position. She also won possession more times than any other player in the top flight across the season. Russo scored eight times in Arsenal's European success and was joint top scorer in the WSL with 12 goals. Her teammate Caldentey managed nine goals and five assists in the WSL and added eight more in the Champions League. The winner will be announced at the PFA Awards ceremony in Manchester on August 19. Not quite a Jannik singer, but Italian stars team up

World tennis No.1 Jannik Sinner is to release a duet with famous Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. The song, Polvere e Gloria (meaning Dust and Glory), features three-time grand slam champion Sinner repeating parts of his winning and losing speeches, which he recorded at Bocelli's studio in Tuscany. "I am very happy and honoured to be part of this project with Andrea, who for 30 years has been a unique and extraordinary voice, a flag for our country in the rest of the world,'' Sinner said. "I could never have imagined hearing my voice in one of his songs. It's extremely moving." The track features both Italian and English lyrics. The accompanying music video features personal and archive images from the duo's childhoods, along with scenes filmed as they collaborated at Bocelli's estate. Sinner is the first Italian to top either the men's or women's singles world rankings in tennis. Bocelli began his career in 1994 and has performed at major events around the world, including the Olympic Games and the World Cup. He performed while stood alongside Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri as the Foxes celebrated their Premier League title success in May 2016, and also sang out the show on Gary Lineker's final Match of the Day appearance in Britain.
