Spain U21 vs England U21 prediction: La Roja to end Young Lions' Euros?
Spain U21 vs England U21 tips: England U21's face Spain on Saturday in the quarter-final of the European Championships and will need to be much improved from their performance last time out against Germany. Lee Carlsey's side found themselves a goal down after just three minutes despite Germany making 11 changes for the game, after already qualifying for the knockout stages. Ansgar Knauff opened the scoring when he took advantage of a mistake by Liverpool's Bayer Leverkusen-bound defender Jarell Quansah and they were 2-0 up just after the half-hour mark when Nelson Weiper somehow got in between the England defence to head home. Despite dominating possession in the second half, they struggled to create any clear-cut chances despite the introduction of £15m striker Jay Stansfield. They eventually pulled a goal back with 14 minutes remaining when a cross from Omari Hutchinson was tapped in from close range by Alex Scott. They battled in vain to secure the equaliser, meaning they finished second in Group B with one win, one draw and one defeat from their three matches. Spain finished top of Group A after wins against Slovakia and Romania and a 1-1 draw with Italy last time out. Carsley's side will take some confidence from the fact that their opponents have conceded in all three matches so far, but they have also scored six. England managed three in their opening game against Czechia but were held to a goalless draw against Slovenia and struggled to break down Germany, but they will have to be at both their attacking and defensive best on Saturday. Spain U21 vs England U21 prediction: Will Young Lions come undone? These two sides met in the final of the last European U21 Championships back in 2023, and back then, it was England who came out on top. Curtis Jones scored the only goal of the game when he deflected a free kick from Cole Palmer past Arnau Tenas in the Spain goal. England goalkeeper James Trafford ensured the victory when he saved a penalty from Abel Ruiz eight minutes into stoppage time. Football betting sites have Spain as the favourites to win the title at odds of 7/2, just ahead of France and Germany at 4/1, while England are fourth favourites at 11/2. Spain have reached the final of this competition five out of the last seven times, winning it three times, the last of which came in 2019 when the tournament was held in Italy and San Marino. They have already shown their battling qualities after netting late winners against both Slovakia and Romania, so this is going to be anything but easy for Carsley's side, who will need their experienced players to step up. Betting sites are backing Santi Denia's side at odds of 13/10, while you can get 47/20 on an England win and 12/5 on a draw after 90 minutes. Both sides are capable of scoring goals, but they have also conceded more than they would have liked and providing England have learnt the lessons from the defeat to Germany, they will make life very hard for Spain, as they look to defend their title. You can get 9/2 on either team to win on penalties or 11/2 on either team to win after extra time, and that could be worth a look. As much as I would love to see England progress, I just think Spain will have too much in Trnava. Spain U21 vs England U21 betting: England need a captain's performance We all know what James McAtee is capable of, scoring seven goals for City last season, and his side will need some of that magic against Spain. The 22-year-old made his debut in 2022 and was named captain ahead of the tournament. Betting apps are offering 19/2 on him scoring first or 22/5 to score any time, or you can get 2/1 on him to score or assist. Spain U21 vs England U21 prediction 2: James McAtee to score at any time 22/5 Unibet Please gamble responsibly When having a bet, it's vital to practice responsible gambling. Scott nets first goal for Young Lions as England progress despite Germany defeat
CHERRIES midfielder Alex Scott scored his first goal for the England U21s as the Young Lions scraped into the quarterfinals of the European Championships. The defending champions were beaten 2-1 by Germany on Wednesday night. Trailing 2-0 at the break after a poor performance, a much improved second half saw Scott score his first goal for the Young Lions, although it was not enough to spark a comeback. Excellent work by Omari Hutchinson on the left wing saw the Ipswich man dance his way past his marker and get to the byline, cutting the ball across the six yard box for Scott to finish from close range. Scott is still playing with a partial face mask over his jaw, after an elbow from Tyrone Mings fractured it and forced him to have surgery. England will now face Spain in the quarterfinals after finishing behind the Germans in Group B, thanks to one win and a draw to go with the defeat. The Czech Republic's 2-0 win over Slovenia meant the defeat did not knock the Young Lions out of the tournament, but improvement is needed from Lee Carsley's side if they are to defend their title.

Paul O'Donovan set to compete in heavyweight double at final World Cup regatta
There is a strong chance he will go head-to-head with his crewmate in Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020, Fintan McCarthy, who will also compete in a double in Lucerne. Lightweight rowing is no longer an Olympic discipline and top lightweights are moving up to openweight crews. O'Donovan will team up with Clonmel man Daire Lynch, the Paris bronze medallist in the heavyweight double. McCarthy continues his partnership with Konan Pazzaia. They took bronze on their first outing in a double at the European Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, last month. Philip Doyle, who partnered Lynch in the medal-winning double at Paris 2024, competed in a quadruple at the Europeans, but he has stepped away from the team for the moment. Brian Colsh replaces him in the quadruple for Lucerne. The original entry also included the Ireland pair of Ross Corrigan and Nathan Timoney, which last competed in the Paris 2024 final, finishing sixth. However, Timoney is recovering from injury and the crew will miss this regatta. Tiarnán O'Donnell, who won gold in the PR2 single at the first World Cup regatta last weekend, teams up with Sadhbh Ní Laoghaire in a new PR3 mixed double. They are effectively competing one level up. This will allow Ní Laoghaire, who is new to pararowing at this level, to be classified so she could be in the picture to compete at the World Championships in September. On the women's side, Ireland will have two single scullers. Alison Bergin competes alongside Fiona Murtagh, who took silver on her debut in the single at this level at the European Championships. Fermoy's Bergin competed in a quadruple at the Europeans, but Imogen Magner effectively takes her place in a crew which has now been entered as a four. Zoe Hyde and Mags Cremen will again represent Ireland in the double, while Siobhán McCrohan returns to action in the lightweight single sculls. Dominic Casey, who heads up Irish rowing as interim lead coach, continues to downplay the importance of results this early in a new Olympic cycle. 'It's a long road ahead,' he said. However, in a prepared statement, he opined: 'Lucerne is one of the standout events in the rowing calendar. The squad selected brings together a mix of youth and experience, and it's a key opportunity for us to benchmark against world-class crews as we look ahead to the next major test.'

Liverpool set price as Erik ten Hag eyes Liverpool swoop to replace Bayern star
Liverpool are braced for a bid for Jarell Quansah after Bayer Leverkusen made their interest in the Reds defender clear. But the Merseysiders will want around £40m to part with the defender. The two clubs have been locked in talks for weeks over a record £116m deal for Germany star Florian Wirtz, who will undergo his medical on Merseyside on Friday. Any deal for Quansah would be separate to that and talks will continue after the Wirtz deal is finalised rather than hold up that transfer. Liverpool would be reluctant sellers of Quansah, 22, who is currently with England's U21s at the European Championships. They have been monitoring Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who they could move for if Quansah was to leave. Guehi is out of contract at Selhurst Park next summer but is also of interest to Newcastle. Quansah signed a new contract last season and is very much admired among the Reds staff but he also wants to play more after falling down the pecking order at Anfield. Leverkusen are looking to replace Jonathan Tah, who left to join Bayern Munich and new boss Erik ten Hag is a fan of Quansah. The Bundesliga club would hope to negotiate a lower fee than £40m and would hope their dealings with the Reds may help talks. Liverpool have Virgil van Dijk, who signed a two-year deal, and Ibrahima Konate, who is entering the last 12 months of his contract, as centre-back options with Joe Gomez's future also in doubt. That would mean should Quansah move then Liverpool are likely to bring in a centre-back with Guehi a player of interest. Any more incoming transfers are likely to be put on pause this summer for the time being following a lucrative window. Jeremie Frimpong arrived from Leverkusen for a fee of £35m, while Wirtz' own arrival will see Liverpool smash their transfer record. Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez also appears to be on the verge of becoming a Liverpool player according to his dad and agent Sebastijan. Speaking on Super Indirektno, he said: 'It's only Liverpool for us and we're not going anywhere else and we won't talk to other clubs. Everything is done between us (personal terms) we just need to sort out some details but it's basically a done deal." Should Liverpool sell Jarell Quansah this summer? Share your thoughts in the comments below Liverpool are expected to pay around £45m for the Hungarian. Meanwhile, Quansah is not the only star to have been linked with an exit this summer. Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa and Andrew Robertson are all potentially candidates to leave over the coming months.
