From Avatar to Titanic, movies that broke records and earned billions in Hollywood

When it comes to Hollywood blockbusters, a few movies have gone far beyond just entertaining audiences – they have rewritten box office history. With their mix of drama, action and intrigue, these films have managed to shatter records while earning a special place in the hearts of viewers. According to data from Box Office Mojo, the following titles top the list of the highest-grossing films of all time: Directed by James Cameron, Avatar was a visual spectacle that introduced us to the world of Pandora. With groundbreaking 3D effects and motion capture, it redefined what cinema could look like. The story of Jake Sully and the Na'vi people resonated with audiences worldwide. With a $2.9 billion lifetime collection, it is the highest-grossing film of all time. A Marvel masterpiece, Endgame was the ultimate superhero payoff. Directed by the Russo brothers, it brought together the Avengers for one last epic battle against Thanos. The film featured a massive cast including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson. With over $2.79 billion in earnings, it held the top spot for a while. The long-awaited sequel to Avatar, this one took over a decade to arrive. James Cameron returned with more underwater visuals, new characters and expanded world-building. Though the hype was not as massive as the first film, The Way of Water still made a huge splash and grossed over $2.3 billion globally. Another James Cameron classic, Titanic blended romance with tragedy. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the film told the heart-wrenching story of Jack, Rose and the ill-fated ship. The project captured hearts worldwide and earned over $2.26 billion. JJ Abrams revived the Star Wars franchise with The Force Awakens, introducing new entrants like Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren while honouring legacy characters like Han Solo. The nostalgic return attracted a whole new generation and earned over $2.07 billion. Avatar (2009) holds the record with over $2.9 billion in global earnings. Avengers: Endgame (2019) is Marvel's highest earner, with around $2.79 billion. Both projects were directed by James Cameron.

Marvel Boss Kevin Feige To Quit After Avengers: Secret Wars? Viral Rumour Shocks MCU Fans

Last Updated: Back in February 2024, there were whispers that Kevin Feige might be leaving Marvel to focus on a Star Wars reboot. Is Kevin Feige planning to exit Marvel Studios after Avengers: Secret Wars? That's the burning question circulating across social media after a viral post claimed the Marvel Studios President might part ways with the studio in 2027. The rumour, which first surfaced via the fan account @MCUSource on X (formerly Twitter), has ignited a flurry of reactions from MCU fans, sparking debates over the future of the franchise. 'BREAKING: Kevin Feige is planning to leave Marvel Studios after the release of #Avengers: SECRET WARS!" the unverified post read. Neither Marvel nor Disney has released any official statement to confirm or deny the claim, but that hasn't stopped fans from weighing in. #Avengers: SECRET WARS! — MCU Source (@MCUSource) June 17, 2025 One fan reacted, 'Wonder why? It's not like the whole mcu is gonna reboot or something like that… right?……" Another praised Feige's legacy: 'Well, love it or hate it, he built something completely singular in its success in film history." Some speculated that creative differences with Disney could be a factor. 'The power struggle with Disney might be at play… they apparently want more MCU content and Mr Feige want to take a different approach," one user guessed. Many acknowledged the fatigue plaguing recent Marvel releases, while also lauding Feige's past achievements. 'SALUTE HIM FOR ALL HE'S DONE… BUT IT IS TIME FOR SOME NEW BLOOD AND NEW IDEAS," read a comment. Another added, 'Honestly, might be the smartest move at this point. Feels like Feige emptied the tank with Endgame… no soul, no momentum." Interestingly, this isn't the first time Feige's potential exit has made headlines. Back in February 2024, there were whispers that he might be leaving Marvel to focus on a Star Wars reboot. Those rumours, like this one, were never substantiated. Despite the speculation, Marvel's official release calendar remains unchanged. In fact, Feige has been actively discussing upcoming projects, including the much-anticipated introduction of the Fantastic Four and X-Men into the MCU, suggesting he's still very much at the helm. For now, the report remains a rumour with no concrete backing. But with the MCU at a turning point, fans are watching every move Feige makes. First Published: June 19, 2025, 20:38 IST

Meghan Markle Shows She's Still Not Ready to Accept Her Flaws

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Meghan Markle was asked what she would have done differently to re-write her narrative and responded: "I would ask people to tell the truth." The Duchess of Sussex was asked the question as a guest on the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast, but her answer is problematic for a number of reasons. The most obvious is that the veracity of some of her own and Prince Harry's past statements has been called into question. However, there is a second underlying issue, which is that she did not actually answer the question that was put to her, and swerving it speaks to a longstanding flaw in her messaging. Meghan Markle attends the Children's Hospital Los Angeles gala at L.A. Live Event Deck, in Los Angeles, California, on October 5, 2024. Meghan Markle attends the Children's Hospital Los Angeles gala at L.A. Live Event Deck, in Los Angeles, California, on October 5, Meghan Markle Told Emma Grede About 'The Truth' Grede asked Meghan: "If you could rewrite your public narrative from scratch, is there anything that you would do differently?" The duchess replied during Tuesday's episode: "Yes, I would ask people to tell the truth." The remark sparked a perhaps predictable backlash from the British press, with some newspapers going as far as suggesting it was a veiled attack on the monarchy. It is easy to see how some might view the comment as hypocritical after some of Meghan and Harry's own statements have been publicly questioned. For example, Meghan's account of an unnamed royal expressing "concerns" about her unborn child's skin tone in March 2021 prompted King Charles III to write to Meghan to say the comment was simply curiosity, according to biography Endgame. And when Harry told ITV in January 2023 that Meghan had never accused the royals of racism but rather unconscious bias, it prompted some to argue that if the public had misinterpreted her comments, the couple should have corrected the record right away instead of waiting around a year and a half. Dickie Arbiter, a former spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth II, also said he was misquoted in Prince Harry's book, Spare, which suggested he was part of a "Fleet Street jury" and "concluded, with his fellow jurors, that we should hereafter 'expect no mercy'" following the couple's decision to quit royal life. In reality, the quote had come from British journalist Sir Trevor Phillips, while Arbiter told Newsweek he deserved an apology, though he did not get one. There are innumerable other examples, from the Archbishop of Canterbury correcting Harry and Meghan's account of marrying in secret to the couple contradicting each other in relation to Meghan's first curtsy to Queen Elizabeth II. In their 2022 Netflix biopic, Meghan said she messed up the curtsy: "I mean, Americans would understand this. We have Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament [a dinner theater]...it was like that." But in Spare, Harry wrote: "Meg went straight to her and dropped a deep, flawless curtsy." And, of course, Queen Elizabeth II responded to their 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview with the famous line: "Some recollections may vary." The problems, though, go beyond the question of whether it is hypocritical for Meghan to demand the truth from others. Prince Harry Denounces the Media Days Into Their Relationship Not least of all, the couple effectively did ask people to tell the truth, albeit using a more elaborate form of words. Harry released a statement through Jason Knauf, the communications secretary at Kensington Palace, on November 8, 2016, just more than a week after their relationship became public knowledge, which stated: "The past week has seen a line crossed. His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. "Some of this has been very public—the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments. "Some of it has been hidden from the public—the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life." The reference to "defamation" and a "smear" was a clear indication Harry felt the stories in the papers were untrue. And that was itself a re-iteration of Harry's longstanding and very well-known position in the British media. For example, when he turned 21, he gave an interview in which he spoke about how protective he was of then-girlfriend Chelsy Davy: "I suppose that is the media in general. There's truth and there's lies and unfortunately I can't get the truth across because I don't have my own column in the paper." Meghan also made similar comments during an interview in 2019 for ITV documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey: "I never thought this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair. And that is the part that is hard to reconcile." All of these interventions were interpreted as pleas for the media to tell the truth at a point when Harry had very firmly established his position that the tabloids were full of lies. Needless to say, none of these interventions resolved the couple's conflicts with the media. Harry and Meghan's Inability to Acknowledge Their Own Flaws In reality, Meghan's answer has the effect of deflecting the question away from how she might have done things differently and onto her frequently repeated existing narrative about what others should have done differently, namely, she wanted them to tell the truth and feels they did not. And it has been said for years that for all their criticisms of other people, Harry and Meghan have done nowhere near enough to acknowledge their own flaws. Rather than batting the question away, Meghan could have finally engaged with the idea that some aspects of her current situation may be a product of her own past mistakes. Prince Harry told Anderson Cooper during his 60 Minutes interview in January 2023: "Meghan and I have continued to say that we will openly apologize for anything that we did wrong, but every time we ask that question, no one's telling us the specifics or anything." However, that statement is hard to reconcile with the passage of his book Spare, in which he described tensions with the staff: "Nerves were shattering, people were sniping. In such a climate there was no such thing as constructive criticism. All feedback was seen as an affront, an insult. "More than once a staff member slumped across their desk and wept. For all this, every bit of it, Willy blamed one person. Meg. He told me so several times, and he got cross when I told him he was out of line." The question of whether there is anything Meghan and Harry might have done differently may well come up again in the future, and it might not be the worst idea for them to have an actual answer for it that does not deflect the blame onto others. ‘Good thing with Nepo is one doesn't even need to beat him': Anish Giri takes fresh shots at Ian Nepomniachtchi

The controversy which began at the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team event last week with WR Chess being allowed to replay a game seems to have spawned a new chess feud. Anish Giri has taken potshots at Ian Nepomniachtchi via X after he had remonstrated with the WR Chess team and exchanged words with these Russian in particular at the London event. The issue had started when WR Chess had lost the first match of the two-match quarter-finals to the Germany and Friends team. But WR Chess had then protested, claiming they were not informed officially of their start times for the round, which had led players to arrive late at the board. Alireza Firouzja had arrived for his game 15 seconds late for a three-minute game. Meanwhile, Nepo arrived with just 1 minute, 4 seconds left on his clock for his game against Vincent Keymer. Hikaru Nakamura arrived with just 38 seconds left on his clock for his clash with Matthias Bluebaum. Consequently, all three lost their games. The organisers had allowed the teams to replay the first match of the quarter-finals after lengthy deliberation. But not everyone was happy with the decision. A video from ChessBase India had shown Anish walking up to the WR Chess team and exchanging words with Nepomniachtchi and Nakamura. Anish was repeatedly asking the players if they would have replayed the game if they had won. Nepo, in response, had thrown comments like: 'Big expert in law, Anish. Since when?' and 'Next FIDE president' at the Dutch GM. 'Anish seems to smart, but whenever he opens his mouth… it's already questionable,' said Nepo. 'Why does he care so much,' Nakamura had asked. The tournament had ended with WR Chess winning the blitz title. Reacting to the incident, American GM Hans Niemann posted on X: 'I think Anish and Nepo should settle things on the chess board. Happy to sponsor a match on Endgame!' To this, Anish replied, while tagging Nepomniachtchi: 'The good thing with Ian is, one doesn't even need to beat him. Just hang in there long enough and he will probably accept to share the title. What do you think, Ian?' Anish's dig about 'sharing the title' was a reference to Nepo and Magnus Carlsen agreeing to share the FIDE World Blitz title late last year after playing out multiple draws. Niemann then posted: 'Perhaps if the winner becomes FIDE president, you can be CO FIDE Presidents.' In another tweet, Anish had responded to the comment about becoming FIDE president. 'My FIDE presidency will have to wait for a long-long while, but the first seed has evidently been planted today,' she posted.
