MDMK will seek more seats but not at the cost of coalition, says Durai Vaiko

The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) will seek a higher share of seats in the upcoming elections but without compromising on the collective interests of the DMK-led alliance, said the party's principal secretary and Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko on Saturday. 'A party must win at least 12 Assembly seats to secure official recognition. We certainly want to grow and will seek more seats, but any decision will be taken in a manner that does not disrupt alliance unity,' he said speaking to reporters here. Commenting on recent remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the English language, he criticised the BJP's stance as regressive. 'It is bilingual education and English that have enabled Tamils to find employment across the world. The BJP insists on a third language in schools, yet questions the role of English — this contradiction is unconvincing,' he said.

Railways clears decks for three RoBs, two subways in Trichy: MP

Trichy: Southern Railway is exploring the construction of three new road overbridges (RoBs) and two subways to ease traffic congestion in densely populated areas near railway tracks in and around Trichy, MP Durai Vaiko said on Friday. After reviewing the proposals with officials from the Trichy railway division, the MP also confirmed that the Maris RoB is expected to be commissioned by June 2026. He visited several proposed sites, including Devathanam near Town railway station, Mela Kumaresapuram near BHEL, Mela Kalkandarkottai, and Manjathidal near Thiruverumbur. "Work for a new RoB near Town railway station is being expedited. Instead of constructing a subway for the new RoB, the railways were suggested to provide a subway for another level crossing near Town railway station to allow vehicles to reach Sanjeevi Nagar. A drain managed by the Trichy corporation runs nearby; there is feasibility for a new subway," the MP told reporters. The MP added that railway authorities are optimistic about developing a new RoB in Mela Kumaresapuram to help villagers access the BHEL Trichy complex. However, the support of the water resources and rural development departments is vital for the plan. He further noted that another new RoB is proposed at Mela Kalkandarkottai and a subway with modified specifications at Manjathidal, near the upcoming MEMU shed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "The new subway will be both taller and wider than the one proposed earlier, enabling vehicles, including small cars, to access the residential areas. "Railways have assured that their scope of work will be completed by Jan 2026. Trichy corporation will then take over the remaining work to link the approach roads," Durai Vaiko said. Earlier, he inspected the Ponmalai railway workshop, where a dedicated maintenance facility for Vande Bharat trains is proposed at a cost of 300 crore. New RoBs: 1. Subway plan for Ariyamangalam moves forward after land survey

Trichy: In a positive development for residents of Ariyamangalam, Trichy, a land survey to assess the area required for a proposed subway at Ukkadai was completed on Thursday. The subway aims to provide a safe passage across the railway tracks for pedestrians, two-wheelers, and autorickshaws. The move follows a request by Trichy MP Durai Vaiko to the Trichy railway division, urging the construction of a subway instead of the planned retaining walls along the railway line between Srirangam and Ponmalai stations. Residents and the MP had earlier met divisional railway manager M S Anbalagan to halt the wall construction, which they said would block access and force locals to take a 1.5 km detour. To advance the long-pending proposal — first raised 15 years ago — the MP formed a coordination team including two retired railway officials. With support from Trichy Corporation Zone III chairperson M Mathivanan, the team brought in a surveyor to assess the land. The survey identified the extent of railway and state-owned land, along with areas of encroachment. "There are some encroachments that need to be cleared for the subway. The land details will be shared with the railway division to proceed with the design," a source involved in the survey said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Damaged underground power cables in Trichy to be replaced

Trichy: Tangedco has sanctioned 25 lakh to replace the damaged underground power cables connecting the Ammapettai substation in rural Trichy to Inamkulathur town. The power cables beneath the railway level crossing on Trichy to Dindigul railway lines sustained damages and became defunct after the 2018 Gaja cyclone. After the disruption, Tangedco supplied power to Inamkulathur and adjoining localities including Puthukkulam and Keelapatti from the Viralimalai substation. The underground power cables will be installed for 70m long and as per the safety norms, security casing will be provided around the new cables. Cables will be laid under the trenchless method, without causing any disturbance to the railway crossing area. Tangedco took up the project after a request from Trichy MP Durai Vaiko in April. "Residents have been facing issues in power supply due to the temporary measure, which became permanent over a period. I will closely follow the whole process till new cables are laid," Durai Vaiko said. Officials said the new cables will be installed in the next few months. The existing cables were installed in 1998.

Durai Vaiko welcomes decision to broadcast Tamil programmes on Tiruchi AIR FM

Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko on Tuesday welcomed the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's decision to revert to the practice of broadcasting Tamil programmes on Tiruchi FM 102.1 at night. In a statement, Vaiko pointed out that he recently condemned the All India Radio for broadcasting Hindi programmes on the Tiruchi FM at night and urged the Union Ministry to revert to the standard practice of broadcasting Tamil programmes. Within 24 hours of his demand, the All India Radio had stopped broadcasting Hindi programmes and reverted to the original schedule. It was a good decision. Language was not just a tool for exchanging information, it was the identity of the region and the people, he said. While thanking the AIR officials, Mr. Durai Vaiko said that it was learnt that the Tiruchi FM station was broadcasting the programmes of another station at night. Tiruchi FM authorities should broadcast its own production at night hours, he said.
