Conducting sticks at the ready — Dubai has just launched its very own orchestra project and it sounds very cool (see what we did there). If you're a budding musician (or have one in the family), you'll be pleased to know the city is about to put a huge amount of funding and time into elevating local talent. Announcing the news on Tuesday June 18, the Government of Dubai explained that it wants to promote Emirati music and culture around the world, through the creation of an orchestra project. A post on X from the Dubai Media Office read: 'Under the directives of Hamdan bin Mohammed, the Executive Council has approved the 'Dubai Orchestra' project with the aim of enhancing the presence of Emirati arts and culture on the global stage, reinforcing Dubai's position as a global centre for culture and an incubator for creativity, and elevating the efficiency of Dubai's arts sector.' Hoping to showcase musical talent to the world, the project has been designed to: Attract exceptional talent Inspire and empower homegrown creatives Stimulate the arts sector and drive its growth Nurture a creative environment that advances the local music sector Support Dubai's Creative Economy Strategy and the Dubai Social Agenda 33 To ensure the goals are met by 2033, there will be a series of new youth-focussed music programmes, as well as new partnerships with community organisations across the city. Dubai floods: Massive Dhs277 million rainwater drainage project completed in Nad Al Sheba
A massive Dhs277 million flood defence project has been completed in Dubai. Serving an area of 340 hectares and encompassing 300 plots of land, the newly completed infrastructure can be found in the Nad Al Sheba 3 neighbourhood. The completed 24km sewerage system includes 11km of household connections and links up with the Dubai Municipality's main sewerage network. An advanced pumping station with a capacity of 4,000 litres per second has been installed, which will allow for more efficient water flow and improved rainwater management. The Dhs277 million project forms part of the municipality's strategic plans to upgrade and future-proof Dubai's infrastructure when battling environmental challenges. Demand for sewerage and rainwater projects in the city has soared following the historic levels of the Dubai floods of 2024. UAE breaks into global top 5 in 2025 IMD Competitiveness Ranking

Scoring an impressive 96.09 out of 100 points, the UAE outperformed major economies including the US, Germany, Sweden, and Canada. The country also retained its status as the most competitive nation in the Middle East and North Africa for the ninth consecutive year. The achievement was highlighted during a recent UAE Cabinet meeting, where officials reviewed the report and reaffirmed the nation's strategic focus on economic leadership, business innovation, and institutional efficiency, according to the Dubai Media Office. The UAE posted significant gains in the business efficiency category, jumping seven places to rank third globally. It also ranked second in economic performance and fourth in government efficiency, underscoring the country's strong policy frameworks and private sector dynamism. In total, the UAE led in 113 global indicators, ranking first worldwide in 22, including employment rate, absence of bureaucracy, availability of global expertise, digital transformation in companies, venture capital, energy infrastructure, inbound mobility of higher education students, and female parliamentary representation. The country also ranked second in social cohesion, flexibility of residency laws, and adaptability of government policies, and placed third in graduates in science disciplines, healthcare infrastructure, and digital technology leverage. Sheikh Mohammed launches phase 2 of UAE's Zero Bureaucracy Programme
The United Arab Emirates has launched the second phase of its Zero Bureaucracy Programme, which aims to fully eliminate digital bureaucracy. Launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the programme aims to cut the red tape when applying for vital government services. In its first phase, the programme eliminated more than 4,000 unnecessary procedures and saved the public a collective 12 million hours of time. More than 30 national government entities were involved in streamlining government procedures, as delivery times were reduced by more than 70 percent. The Zero Bureaucracy Programme will also continue to eliminate unnecessary government procedures and services. Plans will further remove redundancies between entities and abolish all non-essential burdens and requirements. The second phase will focus on enhancing government integration, data sharing, developing joint solutions between departments and adopting leading business practices. It aims to introduce a 24-hour uptime for digital systems as the norm and enhance the overall digital customer experience. Launched in November 2023, the UAE Zero Government Bureaucracy programme simplifies and streamlines procedures, eliminating unnecessary requirements. The first phase targeted a reduction of 2,000 government procedures, but doubled this target, and a 50% decrease in processing times. UAE's 2031 non-oil foreign trade target will be achieved in 2 yrs: Sheikh Mohammed
The UAE's non-oil foreign trade surged by 18.6 per cent year-on-year in Q1 2025, reaching Dhs835bn, as the country accelerates toward its economic diversification targets ahead of schedule, according to Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Media Office (DMO) reported. Sheikh Mohammed stated: 'The UAE's non-oil foreign trade saw growth of 18.6 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of this year, reaching Dhs835bn (global average is 2-3 per cent). The nation's non-oil exports experienced exceptional growth, surging by 41 per cent annually.' UAE's non-oil exports in Q1 2025 Non-oil exports recorded Dhs177.3bn in Q1 2025, a 40.7 per cent increase compared to Q1 2024 and a 15.7 per cent jump from the fourth quarter of 2024. For the first time, non-oil exports represented over 21 per cent of the UAE's total non-oil trade, outpacing both imports and re-exports. 'Our goal to grow non-oil foreign trade to Dhs4tn by 2031 will be achieved within the next two years; four years ahead of schedule. In 2024, GDP grew by 4 per cent, reaching Dhs1.77tn, with the non-oil sector contributing 75.5 per cent to the national economy,' Sheikh Mohammed added. Re-exports grew by 6 per cent annually to Dhs189.1bn, while imports reached Dhs468.6bn, up 17.2 per cent year-on-year but slightly down 1.7 per cent from Q4 2024. According to the (DMO) report, Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed the country's economic trajectory: 'Under the leadership of HH [UAE President] Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE's economic growth is achieving unprecedented success. Indicators of social, economic, and strategic stability and prosperity are at their highest historical levels. We are confident in an even brighter future, driven by the focused efforts of thousands of dedicated teams working to realise the UAE's global ambitions.' UAE's top trading partners Trade with the UAE's top 10 trading partners rose by 20.2 per cent in Q1 2025, surpassing the 16.9 per cent growth rate with other countries. Bilateral trade with India increased by 31 per cent, with Saudi Arabia by 127 per cent, with Turkiye by 8.3 per cent, and with China by 9.6 per cent, breaking previous records. The UAE has reported consistent record-breaking non-oil trade performance for several years, underpinning its efforts to position itself as a global hub for commerce, investment, and logistics.
