60-day river yoga floats dual message of wellness & cleanliness

Lucknow: The 60-day River Yoga campaign, blending wellness and environmental action, concluded with a mass yoga demonstration at Kudiya Ghat on International Yoga Day on Saturday. The campaign was led by the Gomti Task Force (137 Composite Ecological Task Force Battalion, Territorial Army), in collaboration with the State Mission for Clean Ganga (SMCG-UP), Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), and the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC). The drive brought together students, civil society members, and volunteers for daily yoga sessions and riverbank clean-up campaigns. The concluding event, which drew over 300 participants, featured a mass yoga demonstration, an exhibition summarising the 60-day campaign, and felicitation of key contributors. Attendees included Rajya Sabha members Dinesh Sharma, former minister Mohsin Raza, Prof Venkatesh Dutta from BBAU, civic officials, and representatives from the army. "We completed 60 days of continuous clean-up and yoga on the banks of Gomti. The campaign has led to the approval of several eco-measures, such as a dedicated budget in the Lucknow Municipal Corporation for a trash skimmer, and the start of continuous monitoring of STPs and drains," said Prof Venkatesh Dutta, who added that the initiative was a model of civil-military-academic collaboration, promoting a people-led approach to environmental restoration and river rejuvenation. Launched on April 21, the campaign operated daily from 6-8am across five major ghats — Kudiya, Mankameshwar, Jhulelal, Gau, and Chhath. Each session began with guided yoga led by certified instructors and was followed by clean-up activities involving NCC/NSS cadets, local NGOs, and residents. Weekly themes such as "plastic-free ghats" and "mindfulness by the river" emphasized the connection between personal well-being and ecological responsibility. The initiative resulted in several civic outcomes, including continuous monitoring of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and drains flowing into the Gomti.

A sub-inspector in Bhopal has been removed from field duty after a video surfaced showing him allegedly instructing a gym owner to prohibit Muslims from entering the facility. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and prompted a police investigation. The video shows sub-inspector Dinesh Sharma telling a gym owner, 'No Muslim will come here to train or take training. I am telling you this clearly.' The comments were reportedly made after members of the right-wing outfit Bajrang Dal visited the gym, located in the Ayodhya Nagar area, and raised objections to the presence of Muslim trainers. Police were called in to defuse the situation. It was during this intervention that Sharma allegedly made the controversial remarks, according to officials. Following the video, the Bhopal police launched an investigation. On Monday, Sharma was attached to the Police Lines an official said. An official also stated that the police department would not tolerate any actions that create tension between communities. Following the Bajrang Dal members' complaint about the presence of Muslim trainers, Bhopal BJP MP Alok Sharma said a list of such gyms where Muslims impart training was being prepared. He said there are a lot of gyms that enlist Muslim trainers, and a list of such gyms will be made, which will be given to the police. 'There are a lot of gyms in Bhopal, we are enlisting, in which the trainers are Muslims. Even women should be gym trainers... We will give this list to the police in the coming times... Nobody will be permitted for love jihad now.' He also noted that 'land jihad' is going on in the state, and the administration will take action on such cases. The BJP MP's statement came when he interacted with the media post the 'Bhopal Vileenikaran Diwas' (Bhopal Merger Day) celebrations. (With PTI and ANI Inputs)

Madhya Pradesh: Cop caught on video asking gym to bar entry of Muslims; removed from field duty

Madhya Pradesh: A police sub-inspector has been removed from field duty and attached to police lines after he allegedly asked a gym owner not to allow entry to Muslims at the facility in Bhopal, officials said on June 3. The action against sub-inspector Dinesh Sharma was taken after a video surfaced on social media showing him purportedly making the controversial comments. "No Mohamedan (Muslim) will come here to train or take training. I am telling you this clearly," the policeman was heard instructing the gym owner in the now-viral video clip on social media. A group of people had raised objection to the presence of Muslim trainers at the gym in Bhopal's Ayodhya Nagar locality, according to reports. Bajrang Dal members had visited the gym, and raised questions over the presence of Muslim trainers at the facility, police said, news agency PTI reported. Police personnel, including SI Dinesh Sharma, were subsequently called to the spot to manage the situation. Sharma allegedly made the comments at that time, an official said. After a video of his comments went viral on social media, the police started an investigation into the matter. Following the investigation, Sharma was on Monday attached to the Police Lines here, an official said. The police have made it very clear that no such act will be allowed which creates tension between communities, the official added. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Bhopal, Alok Sharma, told the media on June 1 that a 'list of gym instructors' in the city had been compiled, and insisted that women clients should be trained only by women instructors. 'The list of gym trainers will be handed over to the police, who will act according to the law,' he said. Congress MLA Arif Masood criticised the move, questioning the rationale behind targeting gym professionals based on religion. 'Is running a gym now a crime? If it's being run following rules, then what is the problem?' he asked. No Mohamedan (Muslim) will come here to train or take training. I am telling you this clearly.
