Mindef aims to digitalise all 38 schools in camps nationwide
KLUANG: The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) aims to digitalise all 38 schools in camps nationwide as part of efforts to cultivate the use of creative technology among children of defence personnel. Deputy Minister Adly Zahari said the initiative is aligned with the Ministry of Education's Digital Education Policy launched in 2023, which seeks to produce digitally fluent students capable of navigating the demands of today's technological landscape. 'This initiative will also empower educators and education leaders to integrate digital technology into the education ecosystem, strengthen digital infrastructure and content, as well as optimise strategic partnerships to advance digital education,' he said after launching the Affin Digital Space at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sultan Sir Ibrahim here today. SK Sultan Sir Ibrahim is among the three schools that were selected for this year's pilot project, through a collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Affin Bank Berhad, with an allocation of RM94,000. The first two schools to implement the initiative were SK Kementah and SK TUDM Subang. 'All 38 schools in camps, including those in Sabah and Sarawak, will be digitalised in phases, subject to feedback and the effectiveness of the pilot project,' said Adly. He stressed that digitalisation is not only aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of teaching and learning but also supports the national well-being ecosystem through the MADANI nation-building agenda and the National Fourth Industrial Revolution policy. At SK Sultan Sir Ibrahim, a green screen technology studio has been set up to enable students and teachers to produce creative, media-based educational content. 'During the launch, the school media crew also demonstrated the use of green screen facilities, video editing techniques and lighting setups. A short video presentation titled Bicara Pemimpin was also screened, highlighting the students' talents, especially members of the school resource centre's TV team,' he added.

‘Step up digital safety education'
JOHOR BARU: As artificial intelligence (AI) scams get more sophisticated, a cyber expert says it is time for cybersecurity and digital safety education in schools. Malaysian Cyber Consumer Association (MCCA) president Siraj J alil (pic) said the government cannot afford to depend on short-term fixes to address the worsening situation. 'We have already amended outdated laws, such as the Communications and Multi-media Act. 'The Cybercrime Bill will be tabled in October and the Cyber Security Act was passed last year. 'We can no longer find short-term solutions. The Education Ministry must step up and introduce proper digital safety education in schools,' he said when contacted. Siraj said while awareness campaigns by Bank Negara and the authorities are important, they are not enough. 'There is a rush to raise awareness which is a good thing, but awareness alone will not protect us. We are still seeing dozens of scam cases every day,' he pointed out. Siraj said rapid development of AI technology makes it even more important for the authorities to act. 'Even criminals can now easily create their own language models, making it even harder to track them down,' he added. Siraj said the Digital Education Policy introduced in 2023 lacks the fundamental pillars of cybersecurity and safety. He suggested that the Education Ministry adopt the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's (Unesco) Digital Literacy Framework, which includes safety and well-being as key pillars. 'If you teach digital safety properly, students will spread the word and this will be a great way to build awareness,' he added.

Online scams cost 302 Pahang Govt retirees over RM20m since 2022
KUANTAN: Over the past three years, from 2022 to 2024, online scams have cost retired civil servants in Pahang more than RM20 million, affecting 302 individuals, the Pahang legislative assembly was told today. State Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Sim Chon Siang said that in 2022, 85 retirees were scammed, incurring losses of more than RM8.9 million. In 2023, 102 retirees were duped, with losses totalling RM3.7 million, while in 2024, 115 victims recorded losses amounting to RM8.9 million. 'Over the same period, 5,658 other individuals were also targeted in online scams, with total losses reaching RM120 million,' he said during the assembly sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang. He was responding to a question from appointed assemblyman Datuk Wong Tat Chee, who asked how many people in Pahang had fallen victim to online scams in the past three years, and the total losses involving retired civil servants. Meanwhile, State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Biotechnology and Education Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Soffi Abd Razak, said the state government has implemented the Pahang Hybrid School Pilot Project in six schools under the Ministry of Education's Digital Education Policy. He said each school was allocated five classrooms, bringing the total number of classrooms involved to 30. The schools selected for the pilot project are Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Abdul Rahman Talib and SMK Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom in Kuantan, SMK Seri Jengka (Maran), SMK Padang Saujana (Jerantut), SMK Sulaiman (Bentong) and SMK Agama Kuala Lipis (Lipis). He was addressing Datuk Mustapa Long (BN–Padang Tengku), who asked for the list of schools and the number of classrooms involved in the pilot phase of the Digital Education Policy, as well as the sources of funding to support the initiative. Mohd Soffi added that the pilot project also includes SMK RPS Betau in Lipis, a Kampung Angkat MADANI school, which has been allocated two classrooms.
