International Yoga Day celebrated in Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi
As per this year's theme 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health', the International Yoga Day was observed with great enthusiasm in Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi districts on Saturday. In Kanniyakumari, Minister of Dairy Development T. Mano Thangaraj participated in the event organised by the District's Yoga and Naturopathy Department under the Department of Indian Medicine and Homeopathy. The Minister performed yoga alongside students and other participants at the yoga session. More than 300 individuals took part in the event. In Thoothukudi, the International Yoga Day event was held at the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital (TKGMCH). G. Sivakumar, Dean of TKGMCH, attended the programme as chief guest. Around 200 participants, including doctors and medical students, took part in the event. The doctors of TKGMCH including R. Padmanabhan, Medical Superintendent, V. Kalaivani, Vice Principal, Silas Jeyamani, Resident Medical Officer, and A.R. Arun Saravanan, NSS Programme officer, were also present on the occasion. Similarly, TNFJU-Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, celebrated the International Yoga Day with an event organised by the college's physical education and NSS units B. Ahilan, Dean of the institution, presided over the event. At the event he explained the origin of yoga in India and urged staff and students to practice yoga regularly. More than 250 students and staff participated in the event and practiced common yoga protocol on the occasion. V. O. Chidambaranar Port celebrated the 11th International Yoga Day at the port's community hall. Professional yoga trainers from 'Art of Living' emphasized the yoga's vital role in enhancing both personal wellness and collective harmony. Susantha Kumar Purohit, IRSEE and Chairperson of V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, in his message conveyed that yoga was essential for a healthy body, mind and overall well being. He stressed the importance of dedicating at least one hour each day to practice yoga. He also announced that yoga sessions will be conducted at least thrice a week for the port employees and staff under the supervision of the port's sports council.

Minister inaugurates renovated tribal school hostel in Manalodai
Minister of Dairy Development T. Mano Thangaraj on Friday inaugurated the renovated hostel building of the Government Tribal Residential High School at Manalodai in Thiruvattar panchayat union, run by Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department. The hostel was renovated at a coast of ₹42.55 lakh under the Special Area Development Programme 2023-2024. Speaking at the event Mr. Mano Thangaraj said that the school was originally established in 1962 for the development and education of tribal population in the region. It was upgraded to a middle school in 1993 and further upgraded to a high school in 2021. He noted that for the past 63 years the institution has been functioning with dedicated teachers and staff. Currently the school has a total of 112 students with 51 boys and 61 girls from nearby tribal hamlets such as Valaiyamalai, Puravilaimalai, Villusaarimalai, Alamparai, and Padumpaarai. The Minister highlighted the various educational assistance being provided by the Tamil Nadu government and exhorted the students to focus on their studies to achieve greater heights in future. Kanniyakumari Collector R. Alagumeena, Padmanabhapuram Sub-Collector Vinay Kumar Meena and other officials were present at the event.

State govt aims to boost milk production
Indore: The state govt, which set an ambitious target to significantly increase its milk production, aims to contribute 20% of the nation's total output—a substantial jump from its current 9%. It is focusing on improving animal breeds through the effective and results-oriented implementation of artificial insemination programs. This directive came from Agriculture Production Commissioner Ashok Barnwal during a divisional review meeting held in Indore on Wednesday. Addressing the meeting, Barnwal extensively reviewed schemes, programs, and activities related to Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Services, Dairy Development, Fishermen Welfare, and Fisheries departments. He emphasised promoting cow rearing and ensuring that well-managed cow shelters receive maximum benefits from govt schemes and facilities. The senior officials urged all collectors of the Indore division, who attended the meeting, to prioritise efforts to boost milk production in their respective districts, stating that the state govt launched special programs to achieve this target. Furthermore, he called for increasing milk collection through dairy cooperative societies and bringing more livestock farmers into their fold. Recognising the significant potential in fisheries production, Barnwal called for the adoption of state-of-the-art techniques to make it economically viable. He specifically highlighted cage farming as a rapidly emerging and profitable method, urging its widespread adoption. Officials were directed to set district-wise targets for cage farming and ensure their timely completion. He also encouraged the biofloc method, which allows for higher production in smaller spaces. Barnwal emphasised that these modern techniques could transform fisheries into an effective means of self-employment for rural youth.

Dairy farmers urged to increase milk production
Minister for Dairy Development J. Chinchurani inaugurated the International Year of Cooperatives observance organised by the Malabar Union of Milma in Kozhikode on Friday (May 2). She also launched Milma's annual plan for the year 2025–26. In her inaugural address, the Minister urged dairy farmers to increase milk production by providing additional green fodder to cattle and supplying more milk to Milma. She praised Malabar Milma for distributing maximum profits among dairy farmers through additional milk price support and fodder subsidies. She also highlighted the establishment of a milk powder manufacturing unit at Moorkanad in Malappuram district, set up at a cost of ₹136 crore, and emphasised that increased milk supply is essential for the success of the facility. The Minister distributed benefits under the 'Ksheera Sumangalai' and 'Sayanthanam' projects, while the chief guest, MLA Thottathil Raveendran, handed over assistance for the Veterinary Ashraya Medical Store and flood insurance claims. The Minister announced that 29 veterinary ambulances would soon be operational across the State—two in each district—available via the toll-free number 1962. 'You need not worry about the unavailability of veterinarians late at night. Just contact the call centre in Thiruvananthapuram, and the service will be available at your doorstep,' she said. Chairman of the Milma Malabar Union K.S. Mani presided over the event. Director of the Department of Dairy Development Shalini Gopinath, general manager of Kerala Gramin Bank Pradeep Padman, managing director of Malabar Milma K.C. James, and others were present.
