West Virginia native wins Jeopardy! in landslide victory
(WBOY) — A contestant who is originally from West Virginia won big on Jeopardy Tuesday night. Matt Massie, an attorney originally from South Charleston, West Virginia, took a commanding lead during the episode that aired on June 10 when he wagered a true Daily Double during Double Jeopardy. He answered the question correctly and doubled his $7,200 winnings to $14,400. By the end of the round, he had more than three times the winnings of the contestant in second place. Massie also answered the Final Jeopardy question correctly, bringing his total winnings to $30,000 for the day. You can watch Massie play again on June 11 at 7 p.m. on WBOY-NBC. WATCH: West Virginia's Fiesta Tableware appears as a clue on Jeopardy! The last West Virginia native champion, Adriana Harmeyer who won 15 games earlier this year, received some criticism in her home state because she never mentioned the Mountain State during her tenure on the show. Massie, on the other hand, was announced as being originally from West Virginia and even shared an anecdote about West Virginia during the contestant interview segment in the middle of the show. Massie said that while he was in law school, he helped sort out an error with the voting and Senate districts in the small unincorporated community of Malden in Kanawha County, West Virginia. He learned that the community had been sorted into the wrong district for the State Senate and had been voting for the wrong candidates for three election cycles. Massie was able to take the problem to the Kanawha County Commission and get it fixed in 2016, he said on the show. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Constitutional Court dismisses eThekwini Municipality's appeal over R30 million payout
eThekwini City Manager Musa Mbhele. Image: Supplied The Constitutional Court has dismissed eThekwini Municipality in its long legal battle over R30 million payout to the service provider, Daily Double Trading 479 cc /Pholobas Projects. The municipality had approached the apex to appeal an earlier Durban High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal ruling that favoured the service provider. The Constitutional Court said the application brought by the municipality bears no reasonable prospects. The city revoked its contracts after discovering anomalies in the company's tender award during its investigations a few years ago. It was reported that in 2021, the company took the municipality to the Durban High Court, demanding that the cancellation of the contracts and blacklisting be declared unlawful, and for the court to rule that the municipality was indebted to it in the sum of R44.1m the amount owing for the cancelled contracts. A deal was struck where a municipal attorney, identified as Mr Moloi at the time, agreed that the municipality would give Daily Double R30 million as a settlement for its illiquid damages. According to the affidavit of City Manager Musa Mbhele, when this came to the attention of the former city manager, Sipho Nzuza, he refused to approve the R30 million payout. 'He stated he would not approve such a transaction as no one, including himself, had the authority to sanction payments above R30 million. He said whoever had told Moloi to strike a deal with Daily Double had been misguided,' Mbhele wrote in his affidavit. Mbhele stated that Nzuza indicated that this matter would need to go before the eThekwini full council for a decision. 'This matter was never placed before the council, and Nzuza made it clear in his affidavit before the High Court that he had refused to sanction the questionable settlement,' he added. Former eThekwini city manager Sipho Nzuza. Image: Zanele Zulu / Independent Newspapers Mbhele said that to this day, he has no idea who authorised or told Moloi to offer the company R30 million. 'If the municipality were to pay this money, no one would account for it,' he said. Additionally, Mbhele said this case raised questions of law that will impact not only eThekwini Municipality but also other municipalities throughout the country. He said the case required the Constitutional Court to clarify the ambit of an attorney's competency to enter into settlements in respect of municipalities and similar organs of state.

Canadian man gunning for third straight Jeopardy! win tonight. Who is Brendan Liaw?
Article content Thanks to strategic wagering, Liaw finished ahead of Loflin to secure the win and $13,599. He followed up his come-from-behind win with a mostly dominant performance on Wednesday. Liaw correctly answered his first 15 questions and came away from Single Jeopardy! with a $6,600 lead over New Yorker Romy Negrin. She and Colorado native Sam Macken tried to keep it close, but the Canadian had $25,200 by the end of Double Jeopardy!, more than double his competitors, thanks largely to a Daily Double that awarded him $8,800. Final Jeopardy!'s 2024 World News question was another triple stumper, but Liaw bet only $1 and secured his win. When you realise Homs and Hama are in Syria, and Bashar Al-Assad fled his palace in Damascus in Dec 2024, it might not have ended as a triple-stumper FJ. Yep, easily forgotten. Brendan Liaw wins a 2nd #Jeopardy game. Not bad. — The Sport Dogtor, M.D. (@MartySande34622) May 22, 2025

Newest ‘Jeopardy!' champion donates portion of winnings to Oakland schools
W. Kamau Bell just became the Bay Area's latest 'Jeopardy!' champion, and he's donating a portion of his winnings to East Bay schools. The Oakland comic and documentarian won 'Celebrity Jeopardy!' beating out 'A Black Lady Sketch Show' comedian Robin Thede and entrepreneur Dave Friedberg on the season finale, which aired Wednesday, April 23. By winning, he secured $1 million for the charity of his choice: education nonprofit DonorsChoose, which helps teachers request classroom supplies and enables donors to help fund public school projects. 'It means the world to me to be able to do something for this community,' Bell told the Chronicle. 'I know that an educated student is better for all of us, and teachers that don't have to reach into their pockets to support their students is better for all of us. … The students may never actually understand what just happened, but I know the teachers appreciate it." Bell took no time to celebrate. The next morning, he visited Castlemont High School in Oakland, one of the institutions that will benefit from his 'Jeopardy!' pay out. Joseph Blasher, the school's principal, said Bell's donation is particularly helpful in the wake of Oakland Unified School District's financial struggles, which have made it difficult for teachers to plan projects. "It means people that are from our space continue to help and love our space and our people,' Blasher said. 'OUSD is going through some pretty significant budget issues, so this really helps with specific teacher projects that normally we would be able to fund but are not able to … This just means the world to us.' A total of $183,000 of Bell's winnings will support Oakland teachers across 63 schools, while $53,000 will benefit teachers across 22 schools in Mobile, Ala., where his dad lives. Though the comic got off to a slow start during the final 'Celebrity Jeopardy!' matchup, trailing behind both of his opponents by more than $2,000, Bell was able to turn things around during the second half of the game thanks to some pop culture training from his 10-year-old daughter, Juno. He correctly identified 'Drivers License' as the Olivia Rodrgio ballad named for 'this government-issued form of I.D.,' shortly after revealing to the audience that his daughter had quizzed him about the pop singer in the car that morning. 'I nailed it,' he said proudly on the quiz show. But it was the Daily Double that secured the lead for Bell, who correctly responded to the clue about Kendrick Lamar's 'Not Like Us,' setting him ahead at $11,200. Though he dropped to second place during the third round, for Final Jeopardy, Bell was the only contestant to correctly identifying Bob Newhart as the comedian who often credited his wife for inspiring 'what is still called one of the greatest finales in TV history,' a nod to the 1978 episode of 'The Bob Newhart Show.' He ended the game with a total of $27,199, dominating over Thede and Friedberg by more than $25,000. 'This is amazing,' Bell said when receiving his trophy from host Ken Jennings. Past winners of the celebrity game show, which launched in 2022 as an offshoot of 'Jeopardy!', include 'The Mindy Project' actor Ike Barinholtz and 'Abbott Elementary' star Lisa Ann Walter. During his run on Season 3 of the quiz show, Bell faced off against celebrities such as 'New Girl' star Max Greenfield, 'Grey's Anatomy' actor Camilla Luddington and Bay Area comic Margaret Cho. Earlier this month, Bell brought the show to the East Bay for his third stand-up comedy residency at Berkeley Repertory Theater.
