Senior cops review security set-up for Amarnath Yatra in Jammu region

The 32-day annual pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas will commence on July 3 from the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag and the shorter 14-km Baltal track in Ganderbal. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shiv Kumar Sharma also assessed the security arrangements in the border districts of Jammu, Kathua and Samba and underlined the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure the safety of pilgrims. Jammu, June 18 (PTI) Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti on Wednesday reviewed the operational preparedness of security arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra in the region and emphasised maintaining high vigilance throughout the pilgrimage period. The first batch of pilgrims will depart from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp and Ram Mandir in Jammu on July 2. As part of the ongoing preparations, the IGP conducted an inspection in Ramban district, a key transit point on the Yatra route, to assess security readiness, civil infrastructure and inter-agency coordination. He reviewed facilities at the Lambar Ground, including tent accommodation, drinking water, sanitation, and power backup arrangements. Tuti stressed the need for joint drills, intelligence-based planning and public-friendly policing to instil confidence among pilgrims. He directed officers to plug any security gaps through timely inspections and enhanced coordination, and to ensure continuous monitoring and responsiveness during the pilgrimage. A comprehensive meeting chaired by the IGP discussed deployment patterns, convoy regulation, medical emergencies, disaster response, surveillance systems, communication networks and traffic management, especially in high-risk and landslide-prone areas. Tuti also inspected ongoing construction and repair works along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and reviewed the convoy movement plans. Separately, DIG Sharma visited lodgement centres and langar sites in Jammu, Samba and Kathua, and stressed the implementation of Operation Third Eye in coordination with other agencies to ensure foolproof security. He directed intensified checking of vehicles, especially during early morning and late-night hours, and thorough verification of vendors to prevent any untoward incident. The officers were asked to conduct mock drills, review plans regularly and maintain round-the-clock alertness throughout the Yatra period. Ferozepur: Smuggler held with 9.4kg heroin, ₹2 lakh drug money

A smuggler involved in the cross-border trafficking of narcotics was arrested with 9.4kg of heroin along with ₹2.10 lakh of drug money in Zira, Ferozepur police said on Tuesday. Ferozepur range deputy inspector general of police Harmanbir Singh Gill said the arrest was made based on intelligence inputs. 'The accused, identified as Harmesh Singh alias Ramesh (25), a resident of Basti Machhia, was apprehended, while his accomplice Ajay (28) is currently absconding. The motorcycle being used to transport drugs has also been impounded,' the DIG said. 'The heroin was reportedly smuggled from across the Pakistan border, where local handlers work in close coordination with cross-border networks. Our teams are investigating both backwards and forward linkages to expose and dismantle the entire supply chain,' the DIG added. He further noted that earlier, traffickers relied heavily on drones to transport large consignments. 'However, following the recent interception of a drone carrying heroin during a counter-operation, smugglers have shifted to manually transporting smaller quantities' he added. A case has been registered under Sections 21 and 27A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the City Zira police station.

7 cases filed, 40 arrested after clashes on outskirts of Kolkata

A total of seven cases have been registered and 40 individuals arrested in 24 hours after violent clashes broke out in the Rabindranagar area of South 24 Parganas district and the adjacent Nadiyal area. The unrest broke out on Tuesday afternoon over a dispute regarding the location of a shop and the planting of a Tulsi plant. Protesters hurled bricks at police personnel, and isolated incidents of vandalism were reported. Police resorted to force to disperse the crowd. DIG Presidency Range Akash Magharia said, 'So far, three cases have been filed and 28 individuals arrested by the West Bengal Police,' while Kolkata Police also took action in the Nadiyal area. Joint CP (Crime) Rupesh Kumar stated: 'A total of four cases have been registered at Nadiyal police station based on complaints from police personnel. Twelve individuals were arrested by Kolkata Police last night.' The West Bengal Police, in a statement on X, confirmed the coordinated action: 'A total of 40 persons have been arrested so far in seven cases registered over the incident. None of those who have indulged in violence will be spared.' 'The situation is now peaceful and under control. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNS have been imposed in the Rabindranagar PS area in the interest of peace. Representatives of all political parties or groups are advised not to visit the area while Section 163 is in force,' it said. Authorities have also appealed for calm and urged citizens to refrain from spreading misinformation on social media. 'Those attempting to incite unrest will be dealt with strictly, in accordance with the law,' police said. Meanwhile, in a major development in nearby Budge Budge, police said that explosives had been seized and several individuals apprehended while allegedly carrying materials used in bomb-making. Police are now probing if this is linked to the clashes. Diamond Harbour SP Rahul Goswami, in a separate press conference, said the seizure occurred in the Budge Budge police station area. 'At around 8:45 pm yesterday, acting on intelligence inputs, the police intercepted three bikes and recovered a large cache of explosive materials. These included substantial quantities of sodium powder, over 10 kg of aluminium powder, phosphorus dust, red sulphur, and iron dust — all used in making crude bombs,' he said. Five arrests have been made in connection with the seizure. One of the accused, Nabin Chandra Roy, allegedly confessed during interrogation that he is an active RSS and BJP worker. 'He was seen at Bata More on Ram Navami, where a verbal altercation occurred over the rally route and barricades. We have video footage showing him throwing police barricades,' the SP added. ‘Negative Trial': CM Flags Online Campaign Against Meghalaya Amid Indore Couple Case

Last Updated: Sonam Raghuvanshi was arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur for allegedly murdering her husband in Meghalaya, where they went on honeymoon. Lauding the Meghalaya Police for cracking the case of the missing Indore couple on honeymoon, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday addressed the negative campaign online about tourism in the state after the news of the newlyweds surfaced. As Sonam Raghuvanshi, wife of Raja Raghuvanshi, whose body was found in a gorge on June 2, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, the Chief Minister said that the state police was under a lot of pressure as the matter pertained to guests from another state. 'I would like to thank DG, DIG, SP Police Department, who did a superb job under such difficult circumstances. There was a lot of pressure, especially since the case involved guests from another state. The police handled it well and brought the case to a logical conclusion," Sangma said while speaking with CNN-News18 on the case. He said that the police did have several pieces of evidence since the beginning of the investigation, however, they waited to put them out in the open to protect the investigation. 'The terrain and geography made the investigation challenging. Although we had several pieces of evidence from the beginning, we didn't share them publicly to protect the investigation. The police worked very hard, and revealing more details earlier could have affected their work," the Chief Minister said. He expressed anguish over the negative campaign run online against tourism in Meghalaya following the incident that came to the fore last month, and said that the people in the state treat tourists like family. 'There was a lot of negative trial, which was unfortunate. I have never seen such an incident in Meghalaya. We were all shocked, as people here treat tourists like family. It was hurtful to see such negative campaigns being spread," he said. 'There's something sinister brewing for a long time, and state police are just trying to hush it all up. A month or so back, a Hungarian tourist was found dead too. I keep reiterating this – Meghalaya is not a safe place, travel in groups, always, don't step out alone after it's dark," a user wrote on X. Sonam was arrested in UP's Ghazipur earlier today, while four others have been arrested in the case so far, including her alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, the police said. First Published:
