Senior cops review security set-up for Amarnath Yatra in Jammu region
The 32-day annual pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas will commence on July 3 from the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag and the shorter 14-km Baltal track in Ganderbal.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shiv Kumar Sharma also assessed the security arrangements in the border districts of Jammu, Kathua and Samba and underlined the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
Jammu, June 18 (PTI) Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti on Wednesday reviewed the operational preparedness of security arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra in the region and emphasised maintaining high vigilance throughout the pilgrimage period.
The first batch of pilgrims will depart from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp and Ram Mandir in Jammu on July 2.
As part of the ongoing preparations, the IGP conducted an inspection in Ramban district, a key transit point on the Yatra route, to assess security readiness, civil infrastructure and inter-agency coordination.
He reviewed facilities at the Lambar Ground, including tent accommodation, drinking water, sanitation, and power backup arrangements.
Tuti stressed the need for joint drills, intelligence-based planning and public-friendly policing to instil confidence among pilgrims.
He directed officers to plug any security gaps through timely inspections and enhanced coordination, and to ensure continuous monitoring and responsiveness during the pilgrimage.
A comprehensive meeting chaired by the IGP discussed deployment patterns, convoy regulation, medical emergencies, disaster response, surveillance systems, communication networks and traffic management, especially in high-risk and landslide-prone areas.
Tuti also inspected ongoing construction and repair works along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and reviewed the convoy movement plans.
Separately, DIG Sharma visited lodgement centres and langar sites in Jammu, Samba and Kathua, and stressed the implementation of Operation Third Eye in coordination with other agencies to ensure foolproof security.
He directed intensified checking of vehicles, especially during early morning and late-night hours, and thorough verification of vendors to prevent any untoward incident.

Delhi home minister reviews preparations ahead of Kanwar Yatra
Delhi home minister Ashish Sood on Thursday held a meeting to review preparations for the Kanwar Yatra that begins next month. Sood said that Kanwar organising committees will be provided with all necessary administrative support at a single window system. 'A single-window system will be set up at the district magistrate offices to facilitate approvals and permissions from various departments in a streamlined manner. The safety, service, and convenience of hundreds of thousands of devotees entering Delhi during the yatra will be a top priority,' he added. 'Arrangements related to sanitation, drinking water, uninterrupted electricity supply, and traffic management will be made in a timely, coordinated, and effective manner. We have instructed power department officials to ensure that any issues related to electricity disruptions or leakage risks during rains are addressed promptly during the Yatra days,' he added. The meeting was held with representatives of the fire services department, police, Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, power department and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Sood also directed police to monitor sound systems in camps located near residential areas and ensure that devotional songs played over loudspeakers are limited to permitted hours to avoid disturbing local residents. Police personnel have been asked to politely request pilgrims to avoid playing loud music late at night. Coordination with police forces of neighbouring states has also been advised to ensure the safety and welfare of pilgrims. The Delhi Fire Services has been asked to prepare a plan for deploying small fire tenders near Kanwar camps to respond quickly in case of fire-related emergencies and prevent any mishaps.

Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, speaking on Thursday (June 19, 2025), said that there were signs that tourism to Kashmir, which saw a dip after the Pahalgam attack on April 22, would likely return to normal by the year's end. The Union Minister also met J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. An official said the duo 'discussed strategic measures for strengthening the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir.' Omar Abdullah lauds Vande Bharat train experience, says will consider
Samba (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 19 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised the Vande Bharat Express after travelling on the newly launched Katra-Srinagar route on Thursday, calling the high-speed train the 'best way' to commute between Srinagar and Jammu. The CM said he would soon speak to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw about increasing the frequency or capacity of the train to meet high demand on the route. 'The journey was very good. The train is excellent, and these days, if you have to come quickly from Srinagar to Jammu or vice versa, there is no better way than this. Secondly, it will definitely impact tourism. The demand is so much that as per what I am hearing, it has become very difficult to get tickets in this train for the next 1 month,' Omar Abdullah said. 'After speaking to Railway Minister Ashwini ji, we will see if we can increase the frequency of this train or the carriages in this train, because the demand is very high. Now, to meet the demand, we will have to take some steps immediately,' he added. CM Abdullah also reviewed preparations for the Amarnath Yatra and upcoming Muharram, assuring that the administration is fully geared up. 'Today, I reviewed the situation in Jammu regarding the summers. I especially asked about the arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra and Muharram. All the preparations have been done from our side.
