$1.1 Million Homes in Cork, Ireland

Tooreen | $1.1 million (€975,000) This rustic six-bedroom, four-bath house sits over a natural waterfall near the tourist village of Glengarriff in County Cork, in southwest Ireland. Situated in a hamlet called Tooreen, the unusual house has served for years as the anchor to a popular sculpture park in the surrounding woodlands. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater house in Mill Run, Pa., the three-story house has a giant staircase in a central atrium surrounded by large windows to capture the sounds of the flowing stream beneath it. Glengarriff has about 800 residents and offers amenities including markets, hotels, pubs and restaurants. Its population expands during the summer tourist season. Activities include kayaking, golf, fishing and cycling, and there are boat trips to Garnish Island, which has formal gardens popular with visitors. Nearby is the Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve, with hiking trails through about 740 acres of sessile oak woodlands in the shadow of the Caha Mountains. The city of Cork, with about 228,000 residents, is 60 miles east of the property, as is Cork Airport, which offers regular flights across Britain and continental Europe, and some to North America. Size: 5,274 square feet Price per square foot: $214 Indoors: The front door opens to a large atrium with an imposing spiral staircase. There are five large rooms around the atrium, three with internal windows with atrium views. There are also two bathrooms and utility rooms on the first floor. The spiral staircase ascends to the second-floor landing, leading to a spacious kitchen, a combined dining/living room with a fireplace, and a large bathroom. Off the dining/living room is another sitting room with access to a terrace. A hallway leads to two more rooms that could be used as bedrooms. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Cork Airport named best in Europe for the third time

The airport won the 'under 5 million passengers' category, and it marked the third time that Ireland's fastest growing airport won the accolade. It was previously awarded the honour in 2017 and 2019. The award celebrates and acknowledges Cork Airport's continued excellence in passenger experience, operational efficiency, route development, sustainability and innovation. Olivier Jankovec, ACI europe director general, said the airport thoroughly deserved the recognition. 'The airport team has worked tirelessly to enhance operational efficiency, offer exceptional passenger experience, and deliver on ambitious environmental and sustainability goals,' he said. Commenting, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said it is clear the airport is going from 'strength to strength.' 'It is clear that Cork Airport is going from strength-to-strength every year and this award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of Niall MacCarthy and all his team there,' Mr Martin said. 'I know there are plans to further develop the airport and I look forward to seeing Cork Airport continue to flourish as Ireland's fastest growing airport.' In 2024, Cork Airport welcomed 3.2 million passengers representing 10% growth compared to 2023 figures. This year, the airport is expected to see 3.4 million passengers. ADVERTISEMENT Niall MacCarthy, Cork Airport's managing director, said the ACI award is a 'fantastic endorsement' of the incredible people who make Cork Airport what it is. 'It's also a reflection of the strong partnerships we've built with all our stakeholders, and the loyalty of our passengers who continue to choose Cork Airport,' Mr MacCarthy said. 'We're immensely proud to win this award for the third time and we're committed to continuing to grow our contribution to the south of Ireland.' In May this year, a €200 million investment by daa Group in the development of Cork Airport was announced. The Capital Development Plan includes a new mezzanine floor for an expanded security area, larger duty-free shop, bigger executive lounge, additional car park spaces, more boarding gates, new aircraft stands, and a new pier – all designed to facilitate growth up to and beyond 5 million passengers. Kenny Jacobs, daa CEO, said his organisation was thrilled to see Cork Airport named Europe's best regional airport again. "It's a huge recognition of the brilliant team on the ground who deliver for passengers every single day,' he said. 'This award's not just for the airport - it's for Cork, for Munster, and for Ireland. We have big plans for Cork, and this is a great boost.'

Cork Airport crowned best regional airport in Europe

The fastest-growing airport in Ireland was named the best airport in Europe that serves under five million passengers at the Airport Council International (ACI) Europe Best Airport Awards. The airport recently added four new routes to Corfu, Izmir, Bilbao and Bordeaux, with passenger numbers on track to reach beyond 3.4 million passengers this year. It welcomed 3.2 million passengers last year, a 10pc growth year-on-year. Cork Airport named best in Europe for third time

Cork Airport was named the best airport in Europe, under five million passengers, at the Airport Council International (ACI) Europe Best Airport Awards held in Athens on Thursday night. In May, it announced a €200m investment by Dublin Airport Authority in the development of new infrastructure, including an extended mezzanine floor, larger duty-free shop, bigger executive lounge, additional car park spaces, more boarding gates, new aircraft stands, and a new pier to facilitate growth up to five million passengers. Entrance to Cork Airport renamed in honour of rock legend Rory Gallagher

THE MAIN entrance road to Cork Airport has been renamed in honour of rock legend Rory Gallagher, who passed away 30 years ago this weekend. The sign for Rory Gallagher Avenue was unveiled on Saturday, with Taoiseach Micheál Martin in attendance alongside members of the Gallagher family and civic leaders. The unveiling took place on the same day as the launch of Cork Rocks for Rory, a citywide tribute to the rock icon. The celebrations will include exhibitions, workshops, musical performances and a new walking trail of sites linked to Gallagher's life and career. 'Genuine rock star' The Taoiseach said the renaming of the road at Cork Airport, which will form part of the new walking trail, was a fitting tribute to the musician, who grew up in Cork after being born in Co. Donegal. "It is an immense honour to officially unveil 'Rory Gallagher Avenue' at Cork Airport," said Mr Martin. "Rory Gallagher was a genuine rock star who inspired people right around the world with his music. It was a pleasure and honour to open Rory Gallagher Avenue at Cork Airport. Rory was a genuine rock star who inspired people right around the world with his music and it is only fitting that he is honoured in the city where he spent much of his life. — Micheál Martin (@MichealMartinTD) June 14, 2025 "His legacy is one which reverberates across Cork, and it is only fitting that he is honoured in the city where he spent much of his life. "I want to pay tribute to the Gallagher family and all those at Cork Airport and Cork City Council in bringing about this wonderful initiative in Rory's memory." Tributes A virtuoso guitarist, Gallagher rose to fame with the band Taste before embarking on a successful solo career. He passed away in London on June 14, 1995 after contracting an infection while in hospital, aged just 47. The latest tribute follows other streets being named in his honour in Cork, Dublin and Paris. Meanwhile, there are statues of Gallagher in Belfast and Donegal, while sculptures in his memory have been erected in Cork and Dublin. He has also been featured on a set of An Post stamps and a Central Bank of Ireland commemorative coin. For more information on the Cork Rocks for Rory events, please click here.
