Every petrol pump in Indore told to set up PUC centre in 15 days
'We are constantly trying to improve the air quality of the city. We have found that most of the pollution in the city is caused by vehicle emissions. In view of this, we will ensure that PUC centres are set up at all petrol pumps in the city,' he told reporters after a meeting of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
Indore collector Ashish Singh said petrol pump operators in the Madhya Pradesh city, a commercial hub, are being given 15 days to set up PUC (pollution under control) centres in their premises.
Indore, Jun 20 (PTI) In a move to improve air quality in Indore, the administration has decided to make it mandatory for every petrol pump to have a pollution testing and certification centre to detect vehicle emission levels in the country's cleanest city, an official said on Friday.
The collector warned of action if the directive was not implemented within the stipulated time.
'If a PUC centre is not found to be operational at any petrol pump after 15 days, then a decision can be taken to close that gas station,' he asserted.
The administration will also examine whether or not proper procedure is being followed in issuing 'fitness' certificates to vehicles, the IAS officer maintained.
The senior bureaucrat affirmed in order to improve air quality, the administration is trying to ensure factories that traditionally use coal as fuel start using green alternatives.
According to a study conducted by 'Clean Air Catalyst', a global coalition working to improve air quality, vehicular pollution and road dust have a 70 per cent contribution to the deteriorating air quality in the state's commercial capital.

This league has been introduced for the first time for a separate competition between cities performing excellently in cleanliness.
In the 'Super Swachh League', Indore has been placed along with Navi Mumbai and Surat in the category of cities with a population of more than 10 lakh. PTI HWP MAS RSY
