Delhi riots: Judge hearing ‘larger conspiracy' case brought back to Karkardooma Court after transfer

Arguments in the larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 Delhi riots will not have to be heard afresh, after the transfer of the judge who was hearing the case was reversed on Wednesday. Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai's transfer was announced on May 30 from the Karkardooma Court to the Saket Court and Additional Sessions Judge Lalit Kumar had replaced him, Live Law reported. This was among 135 transfers of judges in trial courts across Delhi. This would have delayed the case significantly, as five of the 18 persons accused in the matter and the public prosecutors would have had to present their arguments before the court again. Bajpai had been hearing the case since September and the case was at the stage of arguments on charges. The trial was expected to begin after the arguments were heard. This would have been the second time that the case could have been delayed because of a routine transfer of a judge. Earlier, Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat had been hearing the case, before being replaced by Bajpai, Live Law reported. However, on Wednesday, a notification on the Delhi High Court website stated that Kumar had been transferred back to the Saket Court and Bajpai was brought back to the Karkardooma Court, where the Delhi riots case is being heard. Notably, Kumar, who replaced Bajpai, heard the case for the first time on June 2 and said that arguments on charges must be expedited, Live Law reported. The case will be heard next in July now. Clashes had broken out in North East Delhi in February 2020 between supporters of the Citizenship Amendment Act and those opposing it. The violence left 53 dead and hundreds injured. The Delhi Police has claimed that the violence was part of a larger conspiracy to defame the Narendra Modi government and was plotted by those who organised the protests against the contentious citizenship law.

Nilambur bypoll in Kerala: Opposition UDF accuses LDF of stoking Islamophobia for Sangh Parivar votes

Kerala's Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF) campaign of stoking Islamophobia to consolidate its position among Sangh Parivar and hardline groups hailing from the other minority communities in the high-stakes Nilambur Assembly byelection on Thursday. Mr. Satheesan's riposte came as a counter to the LDF's accusation that the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) had sacrificed secular-democratic principles and brazenly solicited the support of the 'radical Islamist' Jamaat-e-Islami for political expediency in Nilambur. The LDF had also accused the UDF of gifting the Welfare Party of India (WPI), a political offshoot of the Jamaat-e-Islami, an affiliate position in the Opposition alliance, for the latter's support in the bypoll. Mr. Satheesan rubbished the LDF's 'propaganda' and said the Jamaat-e-Islami had offered the UDF unconditional support in Nilambur. He added that the UDF did not share the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s [CPI(M)] view that Jamaat-e-Islami was a 'terrorist organisation.' Moreover, Mr. Satheesan said that the Jamaat-e-Islami was not anathema to the CPI(M) when it supported the LDF from 1996 to 2016. 'The CPI(M) lost no time in branding the Jamaat-e-Islami as a terrorist outfit when the latter parted ways with the LDF. The organisation abandoned its old slogans and, in 2019, adopted the political line that the Congress is the sole bulwark against the ascendancy of the Sangh Parivar at the national level', he added. Mr. Satheesan said the LDF had raised the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Palestine issue and triple talaq to court Muslim votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to undercut the UDF's traditional voter base. 'Majority appeasement' When the gambit failed miserably, Mr. Satheesan said, the LDF turned to 'majority appeasement' by demonising the Jamaat-e-Islami and repeatedly accusing the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leadership of telegraphing a fundamentalist line to its rank-and-file. 'By pining wistfully in Nilambur about the CPI(M)-Jan Sangh alliance during the Emergency, the LDF is tacitly seeking Sangh Parivar votes. The Hindu Mahasabha responded by declaring support for the LDF in Nilambur, clearly signalling the RSS line in the byelection,' he said. Mr. Satheesan said the CPI(M) general secretary during the Emergency, Puchalapalli Sundarayya, had resigned his post and abandoned his Polit Bureau membership in protest against his party's 'revisionist' alliance with the Jan Sangh. 'The late CPI leader C.K. Chandrappan had warned that any understanding or tacit alliance with the BJP against the Rajiv Gandhi government in the 1980s would sink the Left movement in the country. His words proved prescient. The CPI(M) lost its strongholds in West Bengal and Tripura and is now confined to Kerala', he added. Mr. Satheesan said an overwhelming number of LDF supporters in Nilambur frowned upon the CPI(M)'s 'dalliance' with the Sangh Parivar, and they would throw in their lot with the Opposition alliance.

Congress doing vote bank politics over caste census: BJP

New Delhi, June 17 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi on Tuesday criticised the Congress party, asserting that it has been engaging in vote bank politics under the guise of reservation policies. At the same time, he emphasised that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is committed to ensuring dignity and upliftment for all castes through the conduct of a comprehensive caste census. 'Under the leadership of PM Modi, the cabinet has decided to conduct the census. In the press release, it was clearly stated that, for the first time in the history of independent India, a social, economic survey, and caste census will be carried out along with the national census,' Trivedi stated during a press conference here. He further highlighted that the NDA government stands for 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas' (inclusive development), contrasting it with the Congress party's approach. The BJP spokesperson accused the Congress of neglecting important issues such as Operation Sadbhav and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and criticised their opposition to the caste census. 'The Congress party has a habit of overlooking crucial matters. They are spreading false claims about the caste census and attempting to divert attention from the genuine goal of ensuring social justice,' he added. Trivedi raised concerns over Congress' alleged efforts to manipulate reservation policies, citing examples from Karnataka, Telangana, and West Bengal. "I want to ask the Congress party what they have to say about the people of the minority community, the castes, that they have tried to include in such a large number in Karnataka and Telangana, about which the court has also commented? After all, whose part do you want to take? 'The West Bengal government has included a large number of Muslim community members in OBC lists, with reports indicating that 73 out of 91 castes are from the Muslim community. Such practices reflect vote bank politics aimed at undermining the share of backward classes,' he stated. He further sought to clarify that the ongoing survey in Telangana is not a full caste census but merely a social and economic survey. 'The notification of the caste census is issued by the central government. States can only conduct surveys, not full censuses,' Trivedi explained. He alleged that Congress kept power within one family and failed to support real economic development even though it ruled India for decades. 'The Congress is busy in destructive policy. Wherever the Congress came in power, the fiscal position of that state has deteriorated because of their 'khata khat' model of engaging in expenditure spree;' Trivedi said referring to Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's acknowledgment of the state's precarious fiscal position. Addressing the upcoming population census scheduled to begin in March 2027, he said it will be a comprehensive drive to be conducted in two phases, gathering demographic, socio-economic, and cultural details of every individual besides collecting data on housing conditions, assets, and amenities. State nor Union govt can stop VCK: Thiruma

Trichy: Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi is a force to reckon with, and neither the state govt nor the Union govt can stop it, said party chief Thol Thirumavalavan on Saturday. Addressing a public rally in Trichy, the MP said the party had to approach the court to obtain permission for the rally, as it was initially denied by the police. "The police did not allow us to display our party flags, even though flags of other parties are allowed. We faced resistance in organizing this conference. The police claimed they had not received permission from higher authorities," he said. Claiming that the party is in a place of strength to influence politics, he said, "VCK is an unstoppable force. Why do we support the DMK? What will happen if we leave the DMK alliance? Will we face income tax or ED raids? Neither the state govt nor the central govt can do anything to us. For now, we have made a firm decision, VCK will wait for the right time," he said. "Many say I desire a deputy CM post but we did not even care about CM's post. Power, positions, all of that will come to us. We cannot be pushed to the corner," he said. He said the relationship with DMK is based on a shared ideology. "Despite the criticism, our alliance with DMK is a decision only based on the future," he said. Withdrawal of Waqf Board Amendment Act, Citizenship Amendment Act, and abandonment of National Register of Citizens (NRC) process were among them. Resolutions called for passage of Prevention of Communal Violence Act, and classifying gang killings as terrorist offences. Restoration of statehood for Jammu & Kashmir, and transfer of control of Maha Bodhi Vihar in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, to the Buddhist community were also among the resolutions. Earlier in the day, the VCK leader led a rally under the banner of "Protect Secularism."
