FORMER Manchester United star Ander Herrera has been hit with a four-match ban after clashing with a security guard at the Club World Cup. Tempers flared just before half-time in Benfica's 2-2 draw with Boca Juniors. 4 4 4 And Boca star Herrera received a red card after trying to remonstrate with referee Cesar Arturo Ramos as he consulted the VAR monitor. A security guard intervened and held the midfielder back as he shouted at the ref. Ramos then walked over to Herrera and brandished a red card. Fifa have now slapped a four match ban on the Mexican, which means he will be banned until the semi-finals, should Boca make it that far. Injury could also rule out the 35-year-old after he was forced off in the 20th minute. The Argentinian giants have appealed the ban, and that of his team-mate Jorge Figal who was sent off late on for a reckless tackle in front of a group of Benfica players warming up. That threatened a brawl with tensions mounting after Benfica striker Andrea Belotti was red carded for a dangerous high boot on the back of Ayrton Costa's head. Boca have also appealed Figal's ban after he was hit with a four-match suspension. The club are hopeful of getting the ban reduced as Belotti has only received a two-match ban for his wild challenge. Ramos originally gave Belotti a yellow card but upgraded it after being called over to review by VAR.

But things took a confusing turn when Figal was given his marching orders in the 88th minute, as Ramos also pulled out what appeared to be a religious symbol. Along with his red card, Ramos held up what fans have identified as an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a depiction of the Virgin Mary popular in Mexico. Ramos, a native of Culiacan, Mexico, quickly realized his mistake as he put the apparent religious card back into his pocket. 'La Roja de Guadalupe,' another cracked. Ultimately, nine-men Boca Juniors held on over the final minutes of the contest to earn a point against Benfica at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Boca raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first half as Miguel Merentiel and Rodrigo Battaglia found the net. However, Benfica got back into the match via World Cup winners Angel di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi. Benfica will look to earn their first win of the tournament on Friday when they face Auckland City. Boca, meanwhile, will face current group-toppers Bayern Munich on Friday in Miami.
