Bizarre moment referee tries to show a red card at Club World Cup and pulls out something very different

Daily Mail5 days ago

Club World Cup referee Cesar Arturo Ramos sent off Boca Juniors' Jorge Figal on Monday night - but not before brandishing something else entirely alongside a red card.
Ramos oversaw a testy 2-2 draw between the Argentine giants and Benfica, as former Manchester United man Ander Herrera and Andrea Belotti were sent off earlier in the match as well.
But things took a confusing turn when Figal was given his marching orders in the 88th minute, as Ramos also pulled out what appeared to be a religious symbol.
Along with his red card, Ramos held up what fans have identified as an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a depiction of the Virgin Mary popular in Mexico.
Ramos, a native of Culiacan, Mexico, quickly realized his mistake as he put the apparent religious card back into his pocket.
Still, fans couldn't believe what they had witnessed.

'You're going to be expelled and reflect on what you just did, here's a card!!!,' one joked in a comment translated by X.
'La Roja de Guadalupe,' another cracked.
Ultimately, nine-men Boca Juniors held on over the final minutes of the contest to earn a point against Benfica at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Boca raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first half as Miguel Merentiel and Rodrigo Battaglia found the net.
However, Benfica got back into the match via World Cup winners Angel di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi.
Benfica will look to earn their first win of the tournament on Friday when they face Auckland City.
Boca, meanwhile, will face current group-toppers Bayern Munich on Friday in Miami.

Nicolas Jackson's 'transfer price set' as Chelsea make call after 'stupidity'

Nicolas Jackson's availability status at Chelsea appears to have changed following Liam Delap's arrival and his latest red card picked up at the FIFA Club World Cup, and the Blues have a fee in mind Nicolas Jackson is no longer considered to be 'untouchable' by Chelsea, who will reportedly consider offers between £47million and £51m for the forward. Jackson, 24, has had a mixed time at Stamford Bridge ever since his £32m arrival from Villarreal. In the Blues' 3-1 defeat to Brazilian side Flamengo in the Club World Cup this week, Jackson infuriated fans by getting another straight red card within just four minutes of coming on as a substitute, after a reckless studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas. ‌ It was the second time in four matches that the Senegalese international was dismissed, having been sent off for elbowing Sven Botman in Chelsea's damaging 2-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United back at the start of May. ‌ Jackson had been considered as a long-term player to hold onto by the Chelsea board, but that status looks to have changed, especially with the recent arrival of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for £30m. Juventus have reportedly held exploratory talks for the striker, who has 30 goals and 12 assists in 80 appearances in all competitions for the west Londoners. And according to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues will expect a "high price", understood to be between £47m and £51m if they were to part with the centre-forward. However, it's also claimed that Italian clubs would try to barter Chelsea for a lower fee if they were to make a move. He has a contract at Stamford Bridge which does not expire until 2033, which means the Blues are in a strong negotiating position. Meanwhile, Gianluca Di Marzio understands not only have Juventus made an approach for Jackson, but Serie A champions Napoli – managed by ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte – also hold an interest. In Jackson's last four games, he has earned himself a straight red card against Newcastle United, scored in the Europa Conference League final, provided an impressive assist for Pedro Neto in Chelsea's 2-0 victory over LAFC at the Club World Cup and been handed a straight red against Flamengo. That inconsistency could ultimately cost him his future at Chelsea, and Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer slammed Jackson's red card challenge against LAFC as "stupid" while speaking on the Rest is Football podcast. The Newcastle United legend said: "What was he thinking? ‌ "It happened against Newcastle, I remember it really well. And then he made the apology, and then it happens again. "He's not a youngster anymore. There's a time where you think, 'This is not acceptable.' That cannot happen again. ‌ "If that happens once, okay, you say, 'Hands up,' he's made an error. But then it happens twice and you think, 'Is there an issue here? Is there a problem with his attitude or his mentality?' "So this cannot happen again at Chelsea. He is 24, he's not a youngster, he's got to learn.' Jackson will be absent from the Blues' make-or-break Club World Cup clash against Tunisian side Espérance Sportive de Tunis, being played at 2am Wednesday UK time, where Enzo Maresca's men must avoid defeat to progress. He will also miss Chelsea's opening Premier League match of the 2025/26 campaign at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday, August 17 – that's if he's still at the club by then.

Jobe Bellingham opens up on £32m Borussia Dortmund move, why he only has first name on shirt and the Premier League legends who inspire him - after scoring his first goal for the club

Jobe Bellingham has opened up on his move to Borussia Dortmund after scoring his first goal for the club. Earlier this month Bellingham joined Dortmund from Sunderland for an initial fee of £27.8million plus £4million in add-ons, and he is currently representing the German club at the Club World Cup. Bellingham scored his first goal for Dortmund on Saturday as he found the net against Mamelodi Sundowns in a 4-3 victory in the group stages. The 19-year-old is following in the footsteps of his brother Jude by signing for Dortmund. Jude played for Dortmund between 2020 and 2023 prior to joining Real Madrid. Jobe revealed that he is settling in well at Dortmund following his move. Bellingham told FIFA: 'It's really good actually. I met the boys and signed before I flew out. So, I feel like I'm starting to really settle in with the team. Obviously, it's tough signing for a new club and then flying away straight away, but a lot of people have made it as easy as possible for me. So, to be honest, it's been really enjoyable.' The midfielder also discussed the fact that he has his first name 'Jobe' on the back of his shirt rather than 'Bellingham'. Bellingham stated that he enjoys having his first name on his shirt as it is 'unique' and 'quite cool'. He said: 'Well, if I'm being really honest, obviously, it started when I first signed for Sunderland. I, maybe, thought about it a few times. I thought: Yeah, that would be quite cool. But, only when people brought it up to me. I never thought about it like spontaneously on my own. 'Someone close to me would say: 'That would be cool if you did that'. And then, someone who's quite special to me – a coach that I had at Sunderland and at Birmingham when I was a kid – he said: 'Why don't you do that at Sunderland?'. And, just because I was young, I thought: It would be cool to have my own name on the back of my shirt. So, it was more that than anything (else). 'I wasn't really trying to have a deeper meaning behind it, but I suppose you can find that in that act. But yeah, I think it's quite unique and it's quite cool, and it's something that I enjoy having.' Furthermore, Bellingham disclosed that he is inspired by players such as Premier League legends Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard. He said: 'Even [Diego] Maradona's documentary is amazing, but there's nothing I can learn from him because he's too good. But, yeah, players like – even Patrick Vieira. I didn't really get to – obviously, I didn't get to watch him at all. I watch a lot of clips of him, which is strange really, because I always thought he was more defensive, but it turns out that he does everything really. 'And I watch players in that position, and now like a six or a box midfielder. So, even Gerrard I'm watching all the time, and loads of other midfield players as well.'
