Baby mauled by vicious Cane Corso after teacher owner crossed road to avoid cat on walk

Magistrates warned the dog owner that she must keep Hugo muzzled DOG HORROR Baby mauled by vicious Cane Corso after teacher owner crossed road to avoid cat on walk A BABY was brutally mauled by a massive Cane Corso after a dog-walking teacher crossed the road to avoid a cat. Lucy Bamber was walking her two dogs on leads, including her Cane Corso Hugo, in North Staffordshire on March 2 when the horror attack unfolded. 1 Cane Corsos are commonly used as hunting dogs or guard dogs. Stock image Credit: Getty The "remorseful" 26-year-old teacher told a court that Hugo "has never acted in this manner before". She was walking Hugo, a two-year-old, and a nine-year-old Staffordshire Bull in Longton when she saw a cat and crossed the road to avoid it. But they passed the driveway of a home where a baby was outside, and Hugo mauled the child. The baby was left with several puncture wounds to the back and right arm, which are expected to leave permanent scars. The court heard that Cane Corso Hugo "always" wears a muzzle in public and is on a short lead. He also wears a hi-vis jacket which says "I need space" on it. April Lamai, mitigating, told North Staffordshire Justice Centre that Bamber is "willing to do everything in her power to prevent this from ever happening again". Fury over legal loophole that makes 'killing machine' dog breed MORE dangerous as owners 'plug gap' in XL Bully market By Milad Sherzad EXPERTS have raised concerns over a loophole that allows dog breeders to swerve UK animal welfare laws when importing potentially dangerous Italian mastiffs. Also known as Cane Corsos, the breed is rapidly emerging as the breed of choice for criminals as a replacement for the XL Bully breed it was banned last year. But they are not alone as celebrity owners including soccer star Marcus Rashford and Love Island's Jack Ficham also have Cane Corsos - with many celebs now buying them to guard properties. Cane Corso puppies can sell for thousands of pounds but are sometimes imported from breeders overseas with their ears clipped and tails docked. The procedures are illegal in the UK and canine behaviour experts believe that importing the dogs can be used to circumvent the ban on such surgical procedures in the UK. The concerns were expressed just days after a Sun Online investigation found hundreds of Cane Corso dogs on sale in the UK. The Stoke Sentinel reported that Bamber pleaded guilty to being the owner of a dog dangerously out of control and being the owner of a dog which was dangerous and not kept under proper control. Ms Lamai told the court: "She only noticed the child after Hugo bit the victim. She immediately pulled the dog away. She was shocked by Hugo's behaviour. "When Hugo is in public he always has a muzzle. He has a short lead. "He wears a hi-vis jacket which says, "I need space", on it. He is undergoing extra obedience and recall training. "She no longer walks Hugo on that road." Bamber was fined £487 and ordered to pay £300 compensation to the mother of the child, £85 costs, and a £197 surcharge. The magistrates said they were satisfied Hugo is not a danger to the public because of his previous behaviour and it being an isolated incident. The magistrates told Bamber: "You are a fit and proper person to own this particular type of dog. "You must keep Hugo under proper control. We impose the following conditions. When outside he must have a fixed lead and a muzzle. "These will last for the whole of Hugo's life. If you do not comply, Hugo may be destroyed."

'Despicable and disturbing': Gila Bend man accused of felony animal abuse

The Brief The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says it made an arrest in a major animal abuse case on April 9. John Jackson of Gila Bend is accused of several felony animal abuse charges. The sheriff's office called it "one of the most disturbing things we've come across." MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. - A man who the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says has been evading arrest was taken into custody and is accused of several felony animal abuse charges. The sheriff's office detailed the case in an April 9 news conference, saying John Jackson, 38, of Gila Bend, was arrested following a tip from a neighbor. What we know He had reportedly been on the run from authorities since April 5. He was arrested on April 9 in Avondale near 99th Avenue and McDowell Road. Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Jeff Gentry called it "one of the most disturbing things we've come across." Sgt. Enriquez credits a neighbor, near 299th Avenue in Gila Bend, for sounding the alarm on the abuse that he described as "despicable and disturbing." The dogs reportedly didn't have any food, water or shelter. "Food, shelter, water, that's what needs to be provided," Sgt. Enriquez said, citing Arizona animal abuse laws. He says Jackson was using unspecified social media accounts to sell dogs, such as French Bulldogs and Cane Corsos. He says no information points to Jackson selling the animals for dog-fighting purposes. Jackson was allegedly selling the dogs to people in Arizona, and possibly out of state. "It's my understanding he's been doing this for a while now," Sgt. Enriquez said. A neighbor told investigators that they hadn't seen anyone at the home for at least two weeks. As for the conditions of the dogs who survived, Sgt. Enriquez says they have several health issues, including parvo, worms, eye infections and more. They're getting round-the-clock care by a veterinarian team with MCSO. "We're hopeful that they all pull through," Sgt. Enriquez says. "Deputies discovered that the homeowner was absent, with indications that they had been away for weeks. The dogs were found confined to outdoor kennels without access to food, clean water, proper shelter, and covered in feces. Detectives immediately sought a search warrant to enter the property and remove the animals to ensure their safety. Inside the residence, Cane Corso puppies were discovered, along with what appeared to be the deceased mother dog. Additionally, multiple dogs were found in the yard some of which were confined in the side yard. Of the confined dogs, seven were in terrible condition, having resorted to feeding on the remains of two deceased dogs," MCSO said in a news release on April 9. Dig deeper MCSO says this isn't the first time Jackson has been accused of animal abuse. "We do have information that he was charged with animal cruelty in another county here in the state," Sgt. Enriquez says. He didn't specify which county. Right now, Jackson is facing felony animal abuse charges, and MCSO expects him to face more charges. "Additional charges are pending ongoing necropsy, veterinary and medical testing," MCSO said. The sheriff's office says it plans to "make it a very prosecutable case" and will work with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. What's next "Three deceased animals were transported to a veterinarian for a necropsy to determine the cause of death," MCSO said. The dogs are being held by MCSO's Animal Safe Haven as evidence while they get the care they need. "Just because dogs don't speak doesn't make them any less of an issue for us. OK? This is a very serious issue, and we continue to investigate these crimes no matter what," Sgt. Enriquez said. "This can't happen without the public's help," Sgt. Enriquez said, emphasizing the importance of the phrase "see something, say something." If you have any information about this case, or any other reports you'd like to make to MCSO, call 602-876-8477. You can also send a tip using the online portal by clicking here.

East Alabama husband grieves wife killed by neighbor's Cane Corso dogs

BEULAH, Ala. (WRBL) – A Beulah man is mourning the loss of his wife after she was attacked and killed by her neighbor's dogs along Lee Road 356 near the backwaters of Lake Harding Thomas Burt says he and his wife, Patricia Burt, 78, were inseparable for 35 years, spending every moment together. Now, he is left struggling to process the tragedy that took her life. 'She was a good person. She was my friend, my best buddy. We spent every waking minute together. I loved her so much,' Burt told WRBL's Elizabeth White in an emotional interview. Thomas and Patricia first met at work. After their first date at a Halloween party, Thomas knew she was the one. Their bond only grew stronger over the years. 'Stayed together 35 years—back and forth every day, never missed a minute of trying to be with one another. She was a good woman. I don't know what I'm gonna do without her,' he said. On Monday, February 24, Patricia was visiting her neighbor's mother, who was housesitting for her son. As the two women hugged hello, the son's two Cane Corso dogs suddenly escaped their enclosure and attacked Patricia. The attack was so vicious Thomas had no choice but to act. Desperately trying to save his wife, he shot both dogs. Patricia was rushed to the hospital, but despite all efforts, she died the next day. 'Just pray for me that I am going to get through this,' Thomas pleaded. WRBL spoke with David Kelley, the owner of the Cane Corsos, who breeds the dogs at his home along Lake Harding. Though he declined an on-camera interview, he told WRBL over the phone he is heartbroken over the loss of his neighbor and is fully cooperating with the investigation. Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirms there were prior complaints about the dogs harming other animals who walked onto the property, but no reports of them attacking people or getting out of their property. Despite his unimaginable loss, Thomas Burt does not blame his neighbor for what happened. 'Couldn't ask for a better neighbor than David. Wasn't his fault. It was the dogs' fault,' he said. As the investigation continues, Thomas is left trying to pick up the pieces of a life that will never be the same. 'We had a lot of good years together—it's hard to think about,' he said. Local Dog Trainer speaks about Cane Corso dog breed following deadly attack in Beulah

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) – A Beulah woman has died after being attacked by her neighbor's dogs. Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones say it happened around 5 p.m CT on Monday, February 24. Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton says Patricia Burt, 78, was pronounced dead at 10:21 a.m. CT on February 25, 2025, at Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown. Jones say the deadly attack occurred on Lee Road 356. He tod WRBL Burt walked over to visit her neighbor and say hello. When Burt went to hug her neighbor, the neighbor's two Cane Corsos escaped their enclosure and attacked Burt. As Burt's husband and the dog's owner tried to stop the attack, Burt's husband pulled out a gun and shot both animals. Abby Taylor, founder and owner of Family Dog Obedience and Training in Columbus, has trained Cane Corsos in her home, with her family. She says the Cane Corso or Dog Guardian, is a native mastiff from Italy, a descendant of the Canis Pugnax, or canine soldier used by the Roman Army. After the war, Cane Corsos became guardians for homes and livestock. Taylor says these guardian dogs are loyal and assertive. While she has no direct knowledge about the dogs in Beulah that attacked Burt, generally speaking, Taylor says guardian dogs need training early on. 'I do a lot of behavior modification work. A lot of that behavior modification work are aggressive dogs. If the dogs had had that early socialization, then it's a very high probability that we would not see that reactivity. Early socialization, especially for guardian breeds like the Cane Corso are very, very important,' said Abby Taylor, owner, Family Dog Obedience and Training in Columbus, Georgia. Taylor says she likes the Cane Corso for its intelligence and loyalty and that in her experience she has not heard of any attacks in her circle. As for the two dogs involved in yesterday's attack, they were shot by Patricia Burt's husband. Sheriff Jones calls this a 'horrific, tragic set of circumstances involving neighbors who are friendly.' In addition to teaching behavior modification in dogs, Family Dog Obedience and Training also trains service dogs. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
