CM Stalin unveils 50 automated water dispensing units
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday inaugurated 50 automated drinking water dispensing units across Chennai, installed by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) at a cost of Rs 6.04 crore. The units, set up in high-footfall public areas such as bus terminals, railway and metro stations, government hospitals, markets, parks, temples, schools, and colleges, are intended to provide free and safe drinking water to the public. Users could collect water in 1-litre or 150 ml quantities through the automatic dispensers. However, within hours of the launch, residents and commuters reported that some of the machines had stopped functioning. Social activist LM Jai Ganesh said the units in Vasuki Nagar and Muthamil Nagar near Kodungaiyur became non-operational by Wednesday afternoon. He noted even during the inauguration by MLA RD Sekhar, only the machine at Vasuki Nagar dispensed water, but that too stopped functioning after sometime. 'When food delivery agents and auto drivers tried to fill their bottles, the machines didn't work,' he told TNIE. 'When I contacted the toll-free number displayed on the machine, the person who answered the call said they were unaware of the issue and asked me to call the (CMWSSB) area engineer.' An auto driver in the area, who did not want to be named said, 'I finished my meal nearby and came to drink water, but there was no water.'

MK Stalin To Launch Fifty Water Vending Machines In Chennai
Chennai: In a major public welfare initiative to ensure access to clean drinking water for all, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will inaugurate 50 vending machines across Chennai on Wednesday. The official inauguration will take place near the Marina swimming pool. The initiative, led by the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), is designed to provide 24/7 access to free drinking water, especially benefiting people from low-income backgrounds. These state-of-the-art water vending machines, also known as water ATMs, have been installed in strategic public locations throughout the city. According to Metro Water officials, the machines are being installed in two to six key spots within each Corporation zone. Locations include public places such as beaches, parks, temples, bus depots, terminals, and marketplaces -- all identified by the Greater Chennai Corporation for their high footfall and utility. Each vending machine is linked to a Metro Water pipeline and a storage tank to ensure an uninterrupted water supply. The machines are equipped with a purification system and are monitored around the clock through CCTV surveillance. Users can choose between two quantities of drinking water -- 150 ml or 1 litre -- depending on their requirement. "This is a commendable step by the state government, particularly for people who cannot afford bottled water," said M. Sajesh, a resident of Triplicane. "However, consistent monitoring and timely maintenance will be crucial to ensure the success and sustainability of this project." He also recalled a similar initiative launched in 2016 -- 'Amma Kudineer' -- under the leadership of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, which was eventually discontinued due to a lack of proper follow-up and maintenance. Officials from CMWSSB have assured that this new scheme will be actively monitored, with regular inspections and service checks planned to prevent neglect or breakdown. With the launch of these water vending machines, the government hopes to provide safe, accessible, and free drinking water to the city's residents -- a move that reinforces its commitment to inclusive urban development and public health.

Residents stop road work in Korattur, demand civic agencies fix sewage issues
In a bid to prevent overflow of sewage on the roads, residents in various wards have demanded GCC to identify land for construction of sewage pumping stations by CMWSSB, expedite the ongoing work, improve sewage treatment infrastructure and prevent frequent burst of sewer pipelines. After GCC officials started milling work of Korattur Station Road this week, residents stopped the road relaying work, demanding officials to resolve the issue of overflow of sewage on the road before relaying the road. AIADMK councillor said the sewage pipeline burst ten times in the past few months on Station Road leading to overflow of sewage. 'Residents have requested measures to resolve the issue of sewage pipelines bursting at frequent intervals. The residents want diversion of sewage pumping to Kodungaiyur Treatment Plant instead of Koyambedu Treatment Plant or an improvement in pumping stations. If the GCC relayed the road without resolving the issue, they will have to cut the road again in a few days to resolve the sewage issue,' he said. MDMK councillor said the residents have complained about overflow of sewage, causing public health issues for children of Karimedu Colony, First Street, Residents of ward 55 have complained on social media that the sewage was overflowing on Mangammal Street, polluting the storm water drain of Chennai Corporation. president of the Federation of North Chennai Residents' Welfare Accociations, said the added zones of north Chennai need more sewage pumping stations and facilities for treatment of sewage and improved septage management. 'We do not have sewage pumping stations in many neighbourhoods in zones such as Madhavaram, Manali, Tiruvottiyur. Residents of north Chennai were invited to visit a new pumping station in Kolathur a few months ago in Venus Nagar in ward 65. It was said to be constructed using better technology from Germany to prevent the characteristic odour of sewage. Residents need better sewage pumping stations and scientific treatment of sewage to prevent pollution of the city,' he said. Residents have pointed to a delay in construction of sewage pumping stations in areas such as Ayanavaram, Kottivakkam and Vadaperumbakkam, stressing the need for identifying suitable GCC land, for the CMWSSB to construct sewage pumping stations with a reliable technology to prevent pollution of the waterways and take measures to prevent the characteristic odour of the sewage pumping stations in residential areas.

Residents seek measures to expedite road cuts for resolving civic problems
: Owing to frequent disruption of power supply in zones such as Sholinganallur, where roads are being dug up for laying underground drainage network, residents have demanded faster processing of requests for road cuts to prevent a delay in restoration of services. V. Parthiban, general secretary of the Confederation of Residents' Welfare Associations, Sholinganallur, demands that civic agencies find a solution to prevent such delay in road cuts. Around 50% of the civic issues that require road cuts in various zones of the Chennai Corporation are related to electricity, water, and sewage, according to data complied by the GCC. Though a large number of service departments, more than 20 in number, carry out road cuts for resolving civic issues and implementing infrastructure projects, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board alone accounts for around 25% of them, and Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), more than 25%. Residents have urged the civic agencies to develop a system to expedite road cuts. 'When there is disruption of power or water supply, we request officials to give permission for road cuts instantly, without any delay,' they say. A. Francis, president of the Federation of Thoraipakkam Residents' Welfare Associations, said work on digging a cement concrete road, which was laid only a few months ago, is under way. 'The residents want the dug-up roads to be restored immediately. But this has not always been the case. There has been a delay in the restoration of the new road after the sewer network was built. We request that a new system be formed for improved coordination between all the line agencies,' he said. AIADMK councillor J. John said, in the past, the AIADMK government had initiated work to build sewer network in close proximity to all houses so that sewer connection could be established without digging up roads. 'The scheme to provide connection to all houses should be strengthened, similar to that of the previous regime,' he said. DMK councillor T.V. Shemmozhi said residents had demanded permission for road cut along Anna Nagar Second Avenue to resolve a sewage-related civic issue in the area. Following an overwhelming demand from residents in various parts of the city, the Chennai Corporation has proposed to expedite the work, and introduce a seamless system for granting permission for road cuts. An official said the new system would be implemented in one or two days, and the guidelines issued shortly. 'We have decided to expedite approvals for pending road cuts across the city. The online system will be altered. Under the new system, the residents will be able to raise claim charges after applying for Metrowater connection. Additionally, the No Objection Certificate from the traffic police can be obtained online,' another official said. At a meeting attended by more than 20 service departments on Tuesday, GCC officials decided to take measures to resolve issues with the departments. On the CMWSSB work under way in zones such as Manali, Madhavaram, Sholinganallur, and Perungudi, an official said they would expedite the road cut and restoration work.
