The introductory address was given by Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, who said that 'Bihar today is emerging not just as a symbol of cultural pride but as the capital of aspirational progress. Institutions beyond Bihar, including SGT University, PPRC, and RMP, must collaborate to analyze the Purvodaya model and accelerate development in the eastern states. To realize the vision of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,' we must document Bihar's success stories and share its best practices across the nation.' Shri Samrat Choudhary, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, spoke on the tremendous progress the state is making and will continue to make. 'Bihar is witnessing a historic transformation, where once no new medical colleges or universities came up for decades; today we proudly have 32 universities and a budget of Rs. 3.17 lakh crore. With Vikramshila University set for revival and land already allotted, we are reclaiming our legacy and building a stronger future for our youth.' Also, part of the start of the event was an address by Prof. (Dr.) Hemant Verma, Vice Chancellor, SGT University, who emphasized the importance of collaboration for development. 'Bihar has long been a cradle of intellectual tradition, from Nalanda to Takshashila. As development increasingly pivots toward the eastern states, universities must move beyond academics to engage with public policy, governance, and field-based research. Today's youth seek more than degrees, they want to understand and influence policies,' he said. The seminar featured three thematic sessions that explored innovation and impact stories from Bihar, evaluated the implementation of central policies in the state, and envisioned a roadmap for Viksit Bihar @ 2047. The change is visible not just in our infrastructure but also in our spirit. Women, who were once under-represented in public service, are now stepping forward in greater numbers to serve in the police and other sectors. These may seem like scattered signs, but together they mark the dawn of a new Bihar.' The last session also included the ceremonial release of the report titled 'Bihar: BIMARU to Behtar.' Caribou and ice monitoring projects among 29 recipients of funding

Water, fish, landscape and caribou monitoring are among the 29 recipients of the 2025-26 NWT Cumulative Impact Monitoring Program (CIMP). A list of the 29 recipients, seven of which are focused on gathering traditional knowledge, 21 are traditional scientific endeavours and one combining the two fields, was released on Tuesday. 'These monitoring and research projects help us to better understand cumulative impacts to caribou, water, and fish in the Northwest Territories,' said Environment and Climate Change Minister Jay Macdonald. 'I'm happy that NWT CIMP continues its support working with Indigenous knowledge to better inform decision-making, through collaboration.' In total, $2.2 million was doled out to the research projects, seven of which are new projects and 15 of which are near completion. Being named a CIMP recipient opens the door to up to $70,000 in funding for up to three years. Projects vary in length from three-year projects to up to 16 year-long efforts. Several major caribou projects are wrapping up this year, including a 16-year-long effort by the Tlicho government to follow the Bathhurst and Bluenose caribou herds through their summer and fall ranges. Along with this long-term project a number of shorter three and six-year projects monitoring caribou diet, habitat, genetics, behaviour and documenting how traditional knowledge maps out the relationship between the caribou and the Inuvialuit. A second study documenting the relationship between the caribou and the Deninu Kue First Nation has one more year of work to do. Numerous water monitoring projects documenting toxicology levels, pollutants and long-term viability of ice roads are also near completion. Which projects receive funding is determined by a steering committee consisting of appointees from the NWT's Indigenous governments, Indigenous organizations, federal and territorial governments and co-management boards. Aside from contributing to the overall wealth of human knowledge, the projects also inform decision making at the GNWT and other government levels. Error! Role of vitamin D in pregnancy: Is sunlight a boon or bane for expecting moms?

The human body produces Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight so it is commonly known as the 'sunshine vitamin'. This vitamin has a crucial role in aiding both maternal and fetal well-being, as the lack of vitamin D might affect pregnancy outcomes. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Garima Jain, MBBS, DNB, CIMP, CGC, CCCGDM, Obstetrics and Gynecology at Apollo Cradle & Children's Hospital in Bengaluru's Brookefield, explained, 'During pregnancy, the need for calcium rises in the body to support the proper development of the baby's skeletal system. Further, vitamin D can help absorb calcium, which makes it important for the body as it is necessary for the development of stronger teeth and bones. Vitamin D also helps regulate the immune system and reduces inflammation, promoting better health for the mother.' Studies suggest that infants born to mothers with adequate levels of Vitamin D are less likely to develop conditions such as asthma and rickets whereas insufficient levels of Vitamin D in the blood can cause complications during pregnancy, such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm delivery, and low birth weight. Dr Garima Jain shared, 'The body naturally produces Vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight. While sunlight is beneficial for producing Vitamin D, excessive exposure can be harmful. If skin is exposed to UV radiation often, the chances of skin damage, sunburn and even skin cancer increase.' She added, 'During pregnancy, women are at risk of heightened skin sensitivity, which exposes them to melasma, skin pigmentation. Half an hour of exposure to the sun during the early morning or late afternoon is mostly safe and healthier compared to remaining under the sun's direct rays at peak times. Applying sunscreen to sensitive areas while leaving some skin exposed allows the body to absorb sunlight for Vitamin D production without risking sun damage.' Dr Garima Jain opined, 'Since sunlight alone may not provide enough vitamin D, including dietary sources such as fortified milk, eggs, salmon, and cod liver oil is very important. Including these in the diet helps in maintaining good health. In some cases, particularly when blood tests identify a deficiency, taking prescribed supplements of Vitamin D is recommended.' Sunlight is vital in helping the body produce vitamin D, particularly during pregnancy. Moderation, however, must be practised to avoid the risks of too much overexposure. Like anything finite or harmful, natural sunlight may be substituted by a balanced diet and supplementation. Getting enough Vitamin D from sunlight, food and supplements may help ensure a healthier pregnancy as well as more positive outcomes for mother and baby.
