Local nonprofits aims to honor legacy of ancestors by uplifting Black excellence in students
A local nonprofit is using education as a tool to unlock Black excellence. School is out for summer, but a group of scholars is learning a very important lesson. It's an educational seminar put on by the nonprofit, Council of African American Parents, or CAAP. Ingrid Johnson founded the organization in 1992, when she says a Black "A-student" at Diamond Bar High School was denied entrance to an AP Calculus class. "She was just prejudged by a teacher who never saw an African American as being stellar in math," Johnson said. After organizing with other Black parents and convincing the then-superintendent, the student was placed in the advanced class. But Johnson didn't stop there. She created a volunteer-led Kindergarten through 12th Grade college prep organization, with an emphasis on embracing your African roots. "We thought it should be more than a Saturday school. It should be a movement," Johnson said. Last fall, Black students made up less than 5% of the total population at both Cal State Universities and University of California schools. But in the last 33 years, 99% of CAAP scholars have gone to 4-year universities. Camara Christian is one of them. "I was accepted into over 30 schools with $1.5 million in scholarships," Christian said. The 18-year-old is getting a refresher on Juneteenth, learning how, despite President Lincoln liberating enslaved Americans in 1863, that message didn't reach those in Texas until June 19, 1865. Christian said ignorance is not bliss, knowing her ancestors were denied their education. "I know my family history, we come from a slave plantation," Christian said. She said that after the plantation burned down, her family ran to Ohio and learned how to read. Fast forward to now, CAAP helped Christian get into Cal State Fullerton as a Presidential Scholar. "Them moving a boundary for themselves, will move it for someone else, and they will see in our organization if she could move that boundary, I can too," Johnson said. Christian said she is living the dream of her ancestors and hopes to continue to make them proud. "It's empowering. Knowing that we are defying all odds and breaking barriers," Christian said. "Doing what our ancestors couldn't do, gaining an education. It's amazing."

APECO secures 12-hectare land for airport development
The Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (APECO) has acquired an additional 12 hectares of land for the development of the existing APECO Airstrip into a commercial airport. In a news release on Wednesday, APECO said the 12-hectare land is located in Barangay Esteves, Casiguran. The acquisition was sealed with landowners, Atty. Edward Chua Cham and Magdalena Chua Cham, through an agreement signed with APECO president and CEO Atty. Gil Taway IV. Under the agreement, the Chua Cham family donated 5.2 hectares of land to APECO, representing half of the Casiguran airstrip located in the economic zone, and sold an additional 6.8 hectares. 'APECO's potential to do more depends on the amount of land we administer. In our continuing land acquisition efforts, we were left with higher rates beyond the zonal valuation. APECO, however, was able to acquire the property from the Chua Cham family at 50% less than the previous buying rate, which we consider highly advantageous to the government,' Taway said. 'Their contribution strengthens our capacity to realize inclusive economic development for the people of Aurora. Their generosity is a testament to the growing public support for APECO's current direction, a powerful vote of confidence in our goal of Bagong APECO,' he added. Atty. Chua Cham said donating and selling their land are their family's way of supporting APECO's vision of bringing progress and opportunities to the northeastern part of Luzon. 'We believe that the development of the APECO Airport is not just a project for Casiguran; it is a project for the Filipino people. This is our small way of contributing to nation-building. We have seen how determined the current administration and APECO's leadership are in driving economic development in Aurora. We hope that our gesture encourages others to support projects that aim to uplift communities and boost economic development,' he said. The APECO Airport is a critical infrastructure project that will significantly improve accessibility to Aurora and the northeastern Luzon economic corridor. The operationalization of the APECO Airport is also aimed at boosting investments and trade by providing direct air links for business travelers, investors, and cargo. In February 2025, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) inspected and assessed the condition of the Casiguran airstrip. The visit paved the way for recommendations for the issuance of a Permit to Operate (PTO). 'We are working with CAAP and other key agencies to fast-track this project. The APECO Airport will not only serve as a gateway to Aurora, but it will also be a gateway to new opportunities for the Philippines,' Taway said. — VBL, GMA Integrated News

Statistics for Natal are available up to February 18, 2024. Excluding Natal for comparison purposes, total passenger traffic YTD was up 11.6%. Passenger Traffic Overview Total passenger traffic increased by 15.9% in May compared to the same month in 2024. Domestic passenger traffic rose by 18.4% year over year (YoY), largely driven by Argentina, along with strong performances in Brazil and Italy. Meanwhile, international traffic grew by 12.1%, with all operating countries contributing positively YoY—except Ecuador—and particularly strong results in Brazil, Argentina, Italy, and Uruguay. Notably, Argentina accounted for 66% of the total traffic growth in May. In Argentina, total passenger traffic increased by 21.4% YoY, primarily driven by the ongoing recovery in domestic traffic, which rose by 22.2% YoY—marking three consecutive months of double-digit growth. JetSMART, which has been introducing new routes in recent months, continued to gain market share, serving 157% more passengers than in the same month last year. Aerolíneas Argentinas saw its market share decline by 2 percentage points; however, it carried 18% more passengers than in May 2024, boosted by the final match of the Argentine Football Cup. Flybondi's market share decreased by 11 percentage points compared to the same month last year. International passenger traffic also remained strong, increasing by a solid 19.6% YoY. JetSMART began operating flights between Mendoza and Rio de Janeiro with two weekly frequencies, while GOL inaugurated the Aeroparque–Porto Alegre route with three weekly frequencies. Load factors on routes to Europe and the U.S. either slightly increased or remained stable in May. In Italy, passenger traffic grew by 10.3% compared to the same month in 2024, mainly supported by an increase in flight frequencies by Ryanair. International passenger traffic—which accounted for over 80% of total traffic—rose by 9.4% YoY, driven by a 14.0% increase at Florence Airport and a 6.0% increase at Pisa Airport. Domestic passenger traffic grew by 15.0% YoY, fueled by a robust performance at Pisa Airport and supported by the aforementioned increase in flight frequencies by Ryanair. In Brazil, total passenger traffic increased by a solid 16.4% YoY, reflecting an improvement in traffic trends despite the ongoing challenges in the aviation environment and aircraft constraints in the country. Domestic traffic, which accounted for nearly 60% of total traffic, rose by 14.0% YoY, while transit passengers increased by 17.7% YoY. Notably, although representing a small share of total traffic (5%), international traffic grew strongly by 41.2% YoY. In Uruguay, total passenger traffic—predominantly international—rose by 8.3% YoY, showing a slight sequential deceleration from April, which had benefited from additional demand generated by the Easter holiday. Azul Linhas Aéreas announced a new direct route between Montevideo and Campinas, with five weekly flights starting in July. This new connection will help strengthen ties between Uruguay and Brazil, facilitating passenger flow and promoting the development of new commercial and tourism opportunities. In Ecuador, where security concerns persist, passenger traffic decreased by 0.8% YoY. International traffic declined by 1.0% YoY, mainly due to reduced operations to the U.S., while domestic traffic increased slightly by 0.3% YoY, impacted by high airfares that have dampened travel demand. In Armenia, passenger traffic increased by 7.3% YoY. Travel demand has benefited from the introduction of new airlines and routes, as well as increased flight frequencies. Wizz Air recently announced the opening of a new base at Yerevan's Zvartnots Airport, with two aircraft and eight new direct routes to Europe. Cargo Volume and Aircraft Movements Cargo volume increased by 6.6% compared to the same month in 2024, with positive YoY contributions from all countries of operations except for Italy. Bomb threat written on toilet paper found in plane in Zamboanga City
A bomb threat written on a toilet paper was discovered inside a Cebu Pacific plane at Zamboanga International Airport on Saturday. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said at 8:20 a.m. a cabin crew member performing a routine inspection after passenger disembarkation saw a tissue note inside one of the aircraft's lavatories bearing the message 'may bomba' (there is a bomb). The flight attendant immediately reported the matter to ground security personnel, who then conducted a thorough inspection of the aircraft. No explosives were found. ''By 8:59 a.m., the situation was declared under control, and normal operations at Zamboanga International Airport resumed. All passengers were cleared for boarding, and flight activities continued without further disruption,'' CAAP said. Presidential Decree 1727 criminalizes the malicious dissemination of false information concerning bombs or explosives. —VBL, GMA Integrated News

Teodoro bares plans for Balabac, Palawan air and naval base
An airbase and naval station are being eyed to be built in Balabac, Palawan, Defense Secretary Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro said Saturday. In an interview with the media, Teodoro said the construction includes a joint-use runway for the use of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). "Mag-iinspeksiyon tayo, dahil ang runway ay ang CAAP. Titingin tayo ng lugar kung saan talaga puwede na maglagay ng airbase at ng naval base," Teodoro said. (We will conduct an inspection, the runway will be for CAAP. We will look for an area where we can actually put an airbase and a naval base.) "Ang report sa akin ay 'yung Air Force side at 'yung naval side ay magkatabi. 'Yun nga lang, may lupain na kailangan kunin para buo 'yung lugar, isahan na lang," he added. (The report I received is that the Air Force side and the naval side will be next to each other. However, there is a piece of land that needs to be acquired first to construct an all-in-one area.) Strategic location According to Teodoro, Balabac serves as a strategic location for the country in an area where foreign vessels, including those of China, often take their route. It is one of the largest islands in the southwest Philippines, where the South China Sea and Sulu Sea merge. "Minsan dumadaan talaga rito ang Chinese vessels. At ito kapag hindi nadama or hindi nagkaroon ng presence, napakadali na abusuhin ng foreign influence and other inappropriate and illegal activities," said Teodoro. (Chinese vessels actually pass through here. When it is not felt or there is no presence, the place is very easy to be abused by foreign influence and other inappropriate and illegal activities.) He said the construction of the naval station is eyed "as soon as possible, depending on the funding." Further, the Western Command (WESCOM) and PAF are also eyeing the construction of a health center in the municipality to address the medical needs of its residents. 'All-in-One Bayanihan' Teodoro also led the 'All-in-One Bayanihan' community outreach activity held in Balabac on Friday. Combined forces of Go Share Philippines, the Balabac local government unit, Balabac District Hospital, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) sought to deliver free services and aid to communities in need in the municipality. Donations were turned over, including school supplies, food packs, water filters, and wheelchairs. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
