Pete Davidson's tattoo removal journey to take "another 10 years" on top of $200,000 already spent on erasing past ink

Pete Davidson has revealed that his decision to remove over 200 tattoos is part of a long personal journey linked to sobriety and self-reflection. In a recent interview, the comedian and actor disclosed that the process began during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and is expected to continue for another decade. The 31-year old said his arms, hands, and neck are already clear, but removal continues on his torso and back. 'It's like putting your arm on a grill and burning off a layer,' he explained, referring to the painful nature of laser treatment. The Bupkis star shared that he started getting tattooed at a time when he was struggling with substance abuse and low self-esteem. 'I used to be a drug addict and I was a sad person, and I felt ugly and that I needed to be covered up,' he said. Now, seeing the tattoos reminds him of a period he's eager to leave behind. While Davidson clarified he holds no judgement against tattoos generally, he noted his own lacked personal meaning. 'They should have meaning. Not just that I was high watching 'Game of Thrones,'' he said, joking about one particular design. He also revealed that some of his tattoos, including those dedicated to former partners like Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande, are among those being removed. He intends to keep only 'two or three' with significant value. Since his time in rehab in 2024, Davidson has been increasingly open about his efforts to maintain sobriety and prioritise his mental health. According to sources, he has spent around $200,000 on the removal process.

Pete Davidson reveals the insane timeline and cost for removing his 200 tattoos: ‘It's pretty horrible'

Pete Davidson is getting real about how long it will actually take to remove his 200 tattoos. 'I started during Covid in 2020, and it's gonna take me another 10 years,' the Saturday Night Live star told Variety in an interview published Wednesday. 'My arms are pretty much gone, and my hands and neck are gone,' Davidson explained, adding that he still has ink to remove on his torso and back — a process he later described as 'pretty horrible.' 'It's like putting your arm on a grill and burning off a layer, and then you gotta do maintenance and let it heal properly,' he explained. 'And it's pretty tough. It sucks. I'm not gonna lie.' Davidson, 31, also admitted that he 'wasn't taking care of [himself]' when he tatted up his body. 'I used to be a drug addict and I was a sad person, and I felt ugly and that I needed to be covered up,' the Bupkis actor divulged. 'And I don't think there's anything wrong with tattoos, but mine, when I look at them, I remember a sad person that was very unsure.' Davidson explained that 'starting fresh' with the tattoo removal makes the most sense for him now. 'When I look in the mirror, I don't want the reminder of, 'Oh yeah, you were a f***ing drug addict. Like, that's why you have SpongeBob smoking a joint on your back,'' the comedian said. 'They should have meaning. Not just that I was high watching Game of Thrones.' The actor, who is currently dating Elsie Hewitt, famously got tattoo tributes to his famous exes, including Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande. In October 2024, Davidson emerged from a stint in rehab with many of his forearm tattoos either significantly faded or completely gone. The comedian continued showing off his tattoo-free arms during a surprise appearance on SNL that November. In January, the King of Staten Island star revealed he might keep 'two or three' tattoos during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. And in February, he gave another glimpse at the tattoo removal process when he stripped down to his undies for a Reformation campaign. A source told People in January that Davidson spent $US200,000 on his tattoo removal journey – and the star confirmed it in his new interview. 'It's a pretty uncomfortable amount of money to disclose, but I think one of the tabloids already leaked it,' he said. 'I've already spent like $200K and I'm like 30 per cent done. So, like, it's gonna suck.'

Pete Davidson Reacts to Mention of Kim Kardashian Romance

Originally appeared on E! Online Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashian aren't keeping up with each other these days, but their past romance is still the talk of the town. In fact, the Saturday Night Live alum—who split with the Kardashians star in August 2022—had a notable reaction when comedian Lunell playfully mentioned his former relationship. During his March 26 appearance on John Mulaney's Netflix talk show, Everybody's Live, Lunell told Pete that she was curious about how he 'continuously pulls all these bad b--ches,' considering she viewed him as a 'regular, average guy.' And an embarrassed Pete couldn't help but grow more bashful as she listed off his dating roster. 'Now, you've had Kim K,' she began, to which the Bupkis comedian covered his face and said, 'Oh God.' For the research and for women across America, I think that you should take me out.' Pete went on to jokingly agree to Lunell's offer if that would 'stop' the conversation. While this playful interaction marked the first time Pete has addressed his nine-month romance with Kim, they seem to be on decent terms. The duo even reunited at the 2023 Met Gala in May, and later crossed paths at the premiere of SNL's 50-year anniversary special earlier this year. As for Kim (who shares kids North, 11, Psalm, 9, Chicago, 7, and Saint, 5, with ex-husband Kanye West), she noted in a March 2023 episode of The Kardashians that she and Pete 'talked' a lot about ending their relationship before the breakup happened. Then, four months later, she reflected on her decision to date the comedian shortly after her divorce from Kanye. 'I definitely jumped into another relationship so fast," Kim told her sisters Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner on their series in July 2023. 'It got my mind away from stuff, and that's not a way to run from things. It's better to deal, heal—that's a good one—deal, heal, feel.'
