Confident Scottie Scheffler ready to defend Travelers title

June 17 - Scottie Scheffler needs no more reminders that his caddie, Ted Scott, was on Bubba Watson's bag when he won the Travelers Championship three times. "After a few holes, that can get pretty annoying listening to Teddy talk about when Bubba won," Scheffler joked with reporters Tuesday about his practice rounds with Scott at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. How annoying? "If you keep saying when Bubba won here, I'm going to hit you with my club," Scheffler said with a laugh. The top-ranked Scheffler is the defending champion this week at the Travelers Championship, where he defeated Tom Kim in a playoff last year. He is coming off a T7 finish at the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club on Sunday and has won three of his last five events, including the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. In all seriousness, and even though Watson (Travelers champion in 2010, 2015 and 2018) is left-handed, Scheffler said Scott has helped him to put the signature event's 6,844-yard, par-70 layout in perspective. "What we talk about on that golf course is I think there's a stigma around it that you have to make a ton of birdies, but it's really about getting the most looks," Scheffler said. "There's certain holes where you have to play really conservative and play to the middle of the green and just get as many looks for birdie as possible." Scheffler shot 65-64-64-65 to finish 22 under par last year, then bested Kim on the first playoff hole with a par at the 18th. "The Travelers is a great golf course in the sense you get very rewarded for good shots," he said. "If you start hitting offline, you can be punished pretty severely. The closing stretch enhances that, and that's why you have such great finishes there year after year." Scheffler, 28, said he appreciates the small-town atmosphere and friendly reception from the fans in Connecticut. "I think playing in front of the crowds that we get out there is really fun for us. The crowd is always really, really good there," he said. .".. It's great. You get such a big crowd, and they're always rowdy and they're having fun, and it gets loud in there. You have those finishing holes like 18, the scene around 18 green every year is always so special for us. "I always dreamt of winning that tournament. I remember Jordan (Spieth) hitting that bunker shot when I was in college (in 2017) and trying to become a pro. It's just one of those golf courses where there's really great opportunity for you to have a very special finish." --Field Level Media

LIV Golf Virginia: Joaquin Niemann wins; Crushers GC take team title

GAINESVILLE, Va. — Joaquin Niemann was once again the man to emerge from a crowded leaderboard to claim victory at LIV Golf Virginia. The Chilean shot an 8-under-63 to earn his sixth LIV Golf win, which is the most of any player. On the team leaderboard, Crushers GC earned its eighth LIV win, which is the most of any team. Crushers GC has now won back-to-back team trophies after finishing first at LIV Golf Korea last month. Captain Bryson DeChambeau, Paul Casey, Anirban Lahiri and Charles Howell III have made up the Crushers since the team's inception. The individual leaderboard was jam-packed with superstars, including HyFlyers GC captain Phil Mickelson and DeChambeau, but also featured past major champions looking to win after long droughts. Smash GC's Graeme McDowell and RangeGoats GC captain Bubba Watson were both in contention until the bitter end. The veterans in the mix played well enough, but Niemann showed once again that he's nearly impossible to beat on Sundays when he's in the mix. Lahiri, who was the 36-hole leader, suffered yet another heartbreak. He finished in a tie for 2nd after shooting a 3-under-68. The runner-up was the fifth in Lahiri's LIV Golf career. Martin Kaymer, the 18-hole co-leader, shot a 1-under-70 to finish tied for eighth — his best finish ever on LIV Golf. Ben Campbell of RangeGoats GC set a LIV Golf record for consecutive birdies made in a single round with seven. The Kiwi birdied the 13th hole through the first hole and ended up shooting a 62. Lee Westwood also shot 62 to match Campbell's low round of the week. Westwood's 62 tied his career-low round on LIV Golf. Thomas Pieters of 4Aces GC shot an 8-under-63. Jinichiro Kozuma and Brendan Steele also had impressive Sunday performances and each shot 7-under 64's. Fourteen LIV players will now turn their attention to the U.S. Open next week at Oakmont Country Club before LIV Golf Dallas takes place June 27-29. TEAM SCORES LIV Golf's new scoring format this season now involves all four scores now counting in every round in the team competition. Here are the results and scores for each team after Sunday's Round 3 of LIV Golf Virginia. 1. CRUSHERS GC -362. 4ACES GC -343. SMASH GC -314. TORQUE GC -255. RANGEGOATS GC -246. LEGION XIII -217. Winless Indian launches into LIV Golf Virginia lead

Pursuing his first individual LIV Golf win, India's Anirban Lahiri has recorded a bogey-free second round at seven-under 64 to hold a two-shot lead in Virginia. A runner-up on the breakaway circuit four times, Lahiri sank seven birdies and made a 39-foot par putt on No.16 on Saturday, then finished strong with a par on No.18 after landing in the rough. On the last, he had to get up and down from a distance of more than 100 yards. "Yeah, those felt like birdies as well," Lahiri said of his impressive finish to the day at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. "I think the first 15 holes was about as solid as I could have played. I missed a few putts and I still made quite a lot of birdies. "Then 16, I was trying to hit like an in-between 9-iron and I tried to compress it a little bit too much, and everyone else saw what happened. It was nice to make that putt." He saved Par from here... 😱Unbelievable save from @anirbangolf on the 16th hole 😮#LIVGolfVirginia @crushers_gc — LIV Golf (@livgolf_league) June 7, 2025 Veterans Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell - who are also chasing their first individual LIV Golf win - are at nine under entering Sunday's final round, just two shots behind the leader. "It's always good to be close to the lead, have a chance on the last day," Watson said. "Looking forward to it. Looking forward to the challenge of this golf course ... You hit your driver good, you hit your irons in the right spots, you have a chance to play this golf course." RangeGoats GC captain Watson birdied the 17th and 18th, then closed his round with pars on the first and second en route to a six-under 65. Kaymer, who shared the first-round lead with Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau, shot a four-under 67. View this post on Instagram A post shared by LIV Golf (@livgolf_league) McDowell notched three straight birdies on Nos. 15-17 to put himself in contention with a five-under 66. Joaquin Niemann, DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, the top three in the individual standings, are tied for fifth at seven under, four shots off top spot. Marc Leishman (71) is the leading Australian at four under and in joint 14th, with Cameron Smith (70) two under, Lucas Herbert (73) six over and Matt Jones (75) eight over. With AAP.

Bubba Watson among 7 LIV golfers to WD from U.S. Open qualifier

June 2 - Bubba Watson was one of seven players tied to LIV Golf that opted to withdraw from a U.S. Open final qualifying site on Monday in Rockville, Md. Monday is the final day of U.S. Open qualifying, often billed as "the longest day in golf," as players at 10 sites across North America play 36 holes to compete for the final spots in the major championship field. A number of LIV Golf members signed up to play at the Woodmont Country Club qualifying site before the league plays outside Washington, D.C., later this week. Watson opted not to move forward with the qualifier, joined by Ben Campbell of New Zealand, David Puig of Spain, Matt Jones of Australia, Thomas Pieters of Belgium and Englishman Lee Westwood. Additionally, Australia's Wade Ormsby, a reserve who has appeared in two LIV events in 2025, dropped out. Not all LIV players decided to skip out, of course. Marc Leishman of Australia shot a 1-under-par 70 in his first 18 holes. Brendan Steele and India's Anirban Lahiri were in the mix after even-par 71s. However, only the top four players at the site will qualify for the major, slated for June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club outside Pittsburgh. Several of LIV's most prominent players are already in the U.S. Open field. Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Spaniard Jon Rahm are invited as U.S. Open winners from the past 10 years; DeChambeau is the defending champion. Englishman Richard Bland was invited after winning the 2024 U.S. Senior Open. A pair of other recent major winners -- Phil Mickelson (2021 PGA Championship) and Cameron Smith (2022 Open Championship) -- are exempt as well. Sergio Garcia of Spain fell one stroke shy of a playoff at a final qualifying site last month in Dallas. --Field Level Media
