Expert reveals conversation habits that make people instantly hate you - including how you take compliments
Many people are guilty of five common habits that will make others instantly dislike them, according to a video by YouTube channel Charisma on Command. One of these key habits people should avoid, according to the clip, is jumping on every opportunity to call praise or attention to themselves. The video claims that if people do find themselves the subject of praise, a great way to handle this is to spread that praise to others. To illustrate the point, the video highlighted an interview from several years ago with Brie Larson and Chris Hemsworth. While the actress is popular with many thanks to her dry humour and sense of irony - something the video narrator pointed out - he suggested that her communication during this interchange may not have read well with the audience. 'I want to make this clear, there are interviews that I can show you where Brie is extremely likeable,' the video was keen to stress. During the Entertainment Tonight interview, in which the actors were promoting the movie Avengers: Endgame. According to the video: 'Chris Hemsworth is talking up his stunt double, and he's putting himself down to do it. This is a nice common move for somebody who is kind of on top. 'And in this case, Hemsworth is clearly athletic and powerful and famous. So it's kind of him to take that trainer and put him above him, even if it means denigrating himself.' The narrator added: 'The charismatic move, the confident move, is to spread the praise. Don't worry so much if you're getting yours. When you give it freely, it comes back to you freely.' According to the video, in this situation, in contrast to her many interviews in which she has come across as very likeable, during this conversation, noted that she did all her own stunts thinking 'this is what everyone does'. While the narrator noted this may have been an ironic comment that didn't quite land with the audience, the situation deteriorated when Tom Cruise was highlighted as an actor who does their own stunts, and it was suggested that Brie could be the next Tom Cruise. She commented that she would rather be 'the first me, not the next Tom Cruise'. A number of viewers agreed with the point, and went on to share their own thoughts in the comments section of the video. One wrote: 'Constantly redirecting the conversation on yourself makes people not want to talk to you.' Meanwhile, others revealed that they found this type of advice useful as they often struggled with how to behave. One YouTube user said: 'Watching these videos always reminds me how hard social life is. Another said: 'As a person with Aspergers who doesn't know how to converse. I think this channel is really helpful.' Meanwhile, another offered a suggestion as to why behaviours can somehow come across differently than intended. They wrote: 'One thing I've noticed about popular, successful people is that they rarely if ever seem to be triggered in public anyway. My guess is they either had stable, loving childhoods or have done trauma work. If you have unresolved trauma certain social things can be massively distressing and will trigger a trauma response, which most people won't understand and will interpret negatively. Brie seems either triggered from past put downs/abuse/bullying or she's trying to be funny and it's falling flat.' The video listed a number of other habits than can be off putting to other people, and are therefore worth trying to avoid during interactions. A number of viewers commented on how it can be difficult to know how they are coming across in social situations Among them were reading negative intent in an ambiguous situation, or in other words, assuming that when a comment is made, it is designed to insult. However, the next point related to this, with the video pointing out that sometimes when a person responds to a comment in a way that appears they took it as an insult, they can actually be just trying to be sarcastic. The narrator pointed out that 'sarcasm requires a "tell" - and noted there could be cultural differences when it comes to how sarcasm is communicated. He explained: 'I know that British people are going to hate this recommendation, but at least in America, a good rule of thumb is that when you are being tongue in cheek, do not be flat in your delivery. '[This is] especially if a literal interpretation of what you're saying would make you sound like a jerk. 'Go over the top and change your tone, your gestures or your facial expressions. This helps people distinguish between normal conversation and a character that you are playing for the purpose of joke.' Moving on, he suggested that people should 'not try to win every moment of banter' if they don't want to risk coming across as unlikeable. When banter can start to feel like a fight, he said: 'Sometimes it is better to stop fighting. Don't try to win every laugh from the audience. Instead, go with the joke, even if it feels like you are the butt of that joke, and then amplify it, not taking this kind of insulting joke seriously. 'You diffuse its power, and you turn the crowd from laughing at you to laughing with you.' The final of the five behaviours that can make people dislike others handling compliments improperly. 'You should avoid responding to compliments with banter that are put downs in nature,' the video said. 'Instead, you can give a sincere thank you, emphasised perhaps with sustained eye contact or a touch [...] Alternatively, you can spin it back around to the other person and playfully find a way to give them back an even bigger compliment.. It concluded: 'Whatever you do, do not punish people when they give you compliments. Otherwise, they will not be so forthcoming. When in doubt, a sincere thank you and a smile or just to return a compliment will take you much farther.'

Hollywood star Brie Larson to release party-themed cookbook
Bang showbiz | Los Angeles Brie Larson is set to release a party-themed cookbook. The 35-year-old actress has joined forces with best friend and chef Courtney McBroom to create 'Party People', their new cookbook that they'll release later this year. The Hollywood star told People: 'Through [our friendship], we've thrown many parties together. We have a really solid group of girlfriends, and whether it's been road trips or at someone's house, parties, whatever, we're really good at celebrating. And part of it is because we love doing it. 'It's not just about the food. It's about knowing how to cook things confidently so that you can enjoy your party … the recipes are based off of those things so you can maximize time with your guests and not feel like you're the one stuck in the kitchen while everybody else is having fun.' 'Party People' will feature more than 100 recipes and party ideas - but Courtney insists 'Party People' isn't a conventional cookbook. She said: 'It doesn't have to be hard. You don't have to do a ton of work to bring all of your friends together and your loved ones and to surround yourself with community. And that was one of the main things we wanted to do, is make sure we were helping people do that.' Meanwhile, Brie previously revealed that she hopes her work helps people to 'feel less alone'.

From Hadestown to Hercules: ancient myths are the gods' gift to musicals
Ancient Greek dramas have long thrived on the West End stage. In recent times: Sophie Okonedo's electrifying Medea, Brie Larson's high-wire Elektra and Mark Strong's smoothly political Oedipus. But the likes of Hades and Eurydice are less often found belting out big numbers alongside a dancing ensemble. Until now, it would seem. Mythological musicals are on the rise: Disney's Hercules opens this month and Anaïs Mitchell's Hadestown is in its second year at the Lyric while The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is going on tour this summer. 'Greek theatre has influenced every facet of our lives, from athletics to religion,' says Cedric Neal, who plays Hermes in Hadestown. 'What better than for it to be translated to the stage with music, choreography and dance?' Neal has a good point: Greek tragedies, in their original incarnations, were traditionally performed with dance and music, so it is fitting for them to take the guise of full-blown modern musical theatre. Hadestown revolves around two ancient tales: Persephone's abduction by Hades and the doomed romance between Eurydice, who ventures into Hades's underworld, and Orpheus, who tries to get her out. Hermes is the show's narrator, delivering some of the plot through songs incorporating gospel, jazz, folk, bluegrass and soul. Music is the purest form of telling a story, Neal says, as it touches heart and soul: 'That's what's so effective, and affecting, about it.' He believes that these myths, set to music, reflect our lives back at us with an added emotional catch. Neal plays Hermes as pansexual: 'Hadestown deals with how complex love can be and what we are willing to do [for it], no matter what the government or church or your parents are saying. The story we are telling reminds us that love will conquer all.' The rock musical The Lightning Thief is another hit, currently at the Other Palace in London. Based on the bestselling Percy Jackson book series by Rick Riordan, the story is certainly ancient – of Poseidon's half-god son and Zeus's stolen lightning bolt. But it is also about teenagers living in today's world, feeling like gawky outsiders. Like Hadestown, it ran both off and on Broadway. This new production is directed by Lizzi Gee, who thinks that musical versions of these ancient stories 'can take you even more into fantasy lands' and that they allow you to connect through the heightened emotions of the song and dance. As its choreographer as well, she had no difficulty in creating movement around these mythic characters. 'I always want to be telling the story through dance and these songs are so narratively driven.' She had gone to producer Paul Taylor-Mills about another idea before he suggested this to her. 'He said go away, listen to the soundtrack, and think if it's something you'd like to do. The second I played the opening number I thought 'I'm in'. Every song is narrative so I could immediately picture it all, because of the imagery through the songs. It was really clear to me how I would stage it.' The show features Percy's adolescent posse of 'half-bloods' (part human, part Greek god) at summer camp. 'For me, it's trying to portray the kids at Camp Half Blood as people who could represent the youth of today, so that they see themselves on that stage and see their stories being told – Percy with his ADHD and dyslexia … I feel like I wanted to say: 'These are real people and this is our connection with their stories.'' Its stage design, by Ryan Dawson Laight, does not conjure a traditionally ancient realm but one filled with electricity, water and sewage in the above, beyond and below worlds. Characters wear jeans and hoodies 'but with something a little otherly to them …', she says. What has been rewarding to experience is the impact it has had on audiences. 'Teenagers who are maybe struggling with isolation or thinking about who they are and feeling different from other people … are so grateful for something they can connect with and connect to … What is remarkable is how many young boys come to watch the musical. It's very much connecting to young masculinity.' These mythic stories also offer a counterpoint to the 'presentation' of ourselves that we so often get on social media, she feels. They offer an exploration of authentic identity and finding our true selves – that, in a way, is the purpose of the classic quests in ancient stories – and contemporary ones, too. Hercules the Musical has been adapted from the 1997 Disney animation film, whose music was composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by David Zippel (both are involved in this Disney stage show). Mythological musicals in animated form are not an especially new-fangled idea: DreamWorks has transposed several ancient, biblical stories to screen, their dramas fuelled by music and song, such as Joseph: King of Dreams and The Prince of Egypt (both these stories have since been adapted for the stage). Aspects of the story in Hercules have been reworked, although many of the loved songs are still there, say co-writers of the book, Robert Horn and Kwame Kwei-Armah. 'We hope the audience goes 'I know the music that was in the movie and now I'm going to accept this iteration …',' says Kwei-Armah. For Horn, the key question was how to adapt mythology 'without losing the DNA of what it is' while making it relevant to contemporary society – just as in the case of The Lightning Thief for Gee. 'It is a coming-of-age story, for me, but also a story about understanding where you fit in in the world and what your strength is.' Kwei-Armah's entry point to the myth was through the original story of Heracles, the divine Greek hero who later became known as Hercules in the Roman canon. 'What I find interesting,' he says, 'is how the story looks at the qualities that make you a god, the trials you have to go through in order to find out who we are, to find your tribe, to be accepted by the tribe you identify with and not just the tribe that is the dominant tribe. Part of the reason I responded to it so strongly when I was asked to join Robert and the team is that I felt it would be fun to investigate authenticity and the idea of being seen through ancient myth.' While they stayed true to the original story on the whole, they have added some new characters. 'We were given free rein, says Horn. 'That said, there is a musical element to the movie, and certain songs that are iconic. You don't want to lose those. Our job is to make those songs work organically even if we have to change the story. People are going to come to hear them.' Kwei-Armah concurs: 'Go the Distance makes me cry every time that I hear it so there's no way we would even think about trying to lose anything like that.' What is so powerful about setting these old stories to music? 'The fundamental thing behind a musical is the idea 'oh no, I can't say it so I must sing it',' says Kwei-Armah. Horn adds: 'These [mythic] stories are all just a little bit larger than life, so lend themselves organically to being musicalised.' Myths also offer eternally relevant stories, their underlying meanings delivered in metaphorical form, says Kwei-Armah. 'We love a metaphor and there's nothing better than a singing metaphor … I think we like being able to look back and see our everlasting selves [in these myths]. That lends itself to a melody.' Hercules is at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London, from 11 June-28 March 2026. The Lightning Thief is at the Other Palace, London, until 15 June and then on tour from 15 August-1 November. Hadestown is at the Lyric theatre, London, until 15 February 2026

Brie Larson might be a monstrous mom in the new J.J. Abrams-produced movie

While it has not been verified if she will re-enter the atmosphere of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Avengers: Doomsday as Carol Danvers, Deadline has confirmed that Brie Larson might be turning monstrous in a new J.J. Abrams-produced creature feature, Fail-Safe. The new project follows a young boy who slowly starts to unravel family secrets involving his mother and the desperate efforts made to keep her true nature away from the rest of the world. JT Mollner, who made an impressive turn with Strange Darling, will direct the film, while Brian Duffield, who penned Love and Monsters and No One Will Save You, will handle script duties. The tale itself is based on a short story written by Philip Fracassi. Abrams told Deadline, 'With Fail-Safe, Brian Duffield has written an absolute powerhouse of a script. It's a horror film that is as sweet and moving as it is terrifying. To have JT Mollner in the director's chair — his Strange Darling blew me away — is a dream come true." Of course, Larson is no stranger to creature features, having battled an array of aliens in the MCU and getting a close encounter with King Kong in 2017's Kong: Skull Island, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. "Finally, having the limitlessly talented Brie Larson as our star sets up Fail-Safe to be that rare horror film that makes you laugh, feel, and care, before taking you on an absolutely wild ride.' The film is currently doing the rounds at Cannes with no confirmed dates in line for production. For now, Larson's schedule looks pretty clear, and there's no confirmation if she'll be appearing alongside other Avengers: Doomsday, which Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, promises has more cast names yet to be announced.
