Shardul Thakur or Nitish Reddy, who should start in England? Ravi Shastri answers
Former India cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed his pick between Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy to start in the playing XI for England Tests. India are set to take on England in a five-match Test series beginning from June 20. Ahead of the all-important rubber, the team management faces a huge dilemma about whom to pick, Shardul and Nitish for the first few Nitish was impressive with the bat in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Shardul has been in phenomenal form in the tour matches leading up to the series. Recently, Ravi Shastri shared his views on the debate and said that he would pick Shardul as his first choice due to his ability to bowl more."I would go with three fast bowlers, (plus) Shardul Thakur. I know it'll be a tough one between Shardul and Nitish Reddy, but you have to see who bowls how much. If Reddy is going to give you 12, 14 overs, then he might get the nod because of his batting," Shastri said on ICC Review. Furthermore, Shastri also named his three-men pace attack, picking Prasidh Krishna alongside Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. The former head coach also stated that the team management could also go with Arshdeep Singh, if conditions are overcast in Leeds and are conducive to three fast bowlers would be, I would go with Prasidh Krishna, I would go with Mohammed Siraj and of course Jasprit Bumrah. In Leeds, if it's overcast and it's cloudy, there might be the temptation of going with the left-armer Ashdeep Singh as well. So it will be Prasad, Prasid Krishna/Arshdeep but the other two will be Siraj and Bumrah,' he Arshdeep and Prasidh Krishna haven't played a single Test in England, however the former has experience of playing county cricket under his belt, having played for Kent. Hence, it remains to be seen if the team management will hand a debut cap to Arshdeep or will pick either of Akash Deep or Prasidh Krishna, who have played a few Tests in their career so far.

India vs India A in 4-day intra-squad game in Beckenham: Will it be streamed live?
India will finalise their preparation for the all-important five-match Test series against England set to begin from June 20, through an intra squad warm up game against India A. However, there will be no live streaming of the fixture for the fans on any platform as head coach Gautam Gambhir has opted for a closed door to a report in PTI, the India coach doesn't want the opposition to get any ideas on the tactical front and hence has opted for a secretive warm up session. Earlier, India had undergone a similar match simulation session ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in the four-day warm up game beginning from June 13, players will undergo 360 overs of match simulation, which will allow the bowlers to have enough overs under their belt before they start the series in Headingley. It will also allow batters a great chance to acclimatise themselves to the conditions in England as they're coming fresh from playing T20 format in the Indian Premier League (IPL). All eyes will be on India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who will be playing a red-ball game after six months, after leaving the fifth Test in Australia mid way due to an Indian team management will be eager to put Bumrah to the rigours of Test cricket by making him bowl multiple spells as he has only played IPL since his comeback from a back stress other conundrum would be choosing an ideal seam partner for Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj with Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna in contention for the spot. The Indian team management will also think hard before choosing between Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav as the lone Jadeja will provide much-needed batting depth and is handy as a spinner, Kuldeep will prove to be an attacking option against England's 'Bazballers'. Hence, India have a lot of questions to answer in their final practice session as new captain Shubman Gill officially takes charge of the team.

Pat Cummins on Scott Boland's exclusion from WTC final: He isn't running out of time
Australia captain Pat Cummins said that it's unfortunate for Scott Boland to miss out from their playing XI for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025. Australia announced their playing XI for the all-important clash on June 10 as Josh Hazlewood was brought into the team ahead of Scott Boland, who played a pivotal role in their series victory over making his debut in 2021, Boland has played just 13 Test matches so far as Hazlewood is often preferred ahead of him in the playing XI. Recently, Cummins was asked about Boland's exclusion from the team, saying that he's unfortunate to miss out, but there's enough Test cricket waiting ahead for him.'There are some guys where you genuinely say you know you've done nothing wrong, don't change a thing. And Scottie's is just really unfortunate to miss out. Joshie Hazel comes back in, we know how good he is, but I think the message to Scottie is there's a lot of Test cricket coming up in the next couple of years and just because you're mid-30s doesn't mean, you know, you're missing this test and that's one test off your career,' said Cummins in the pre-match press Furthermore, the Australia skipper stated that the timely rotation of their fast bowling quartet can help them elongate their careers.'I think you know by having a squad of fast bowlers hopefully we can extend all our careers for an extra couple of years. So it's a really unfortunate Scottie misses this. But the kind of message to him is don't feel like you're running out of time. We've still got lots of time, hopefully, in his career,' he has scalped 56 wickets from 13 Test matches so far at an average of 17.66 with two five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket haul to his name. The right-arm seamer scalped 21 wickets from three matches in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against India at an average of 13.19 with best figures of 6/ was also Australia's best bowler in the WTC final 2023 against India registering figures of 5/105 across two innings. The right-arm seamer has always performed whenever required by his team and will aim to find a place on the West Indies tour beginning from June 25.

Bumrah
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 27 (ANI): Australia's High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, singled out 'best bowler in the world' Jasprit Bumrah as the player who scares him the most, while weighing in on how the 'cricketing relationship and rivalry' between Australia and India has 'blossomed'. Bumrah, with an action of his own, has set the international circuit on fire with his unparalleled level of consistency across all formats. He takes a couple of steps to get into motion, then shifts through gears to charge up, extends his arm to get the angle, and uses his wrist to execute a wide array of unpredictable variations. The 31-year-old, with a mastery in pace and swing, has earned the title of the current 'best in the world' from several former cricketers. Just like many opposition stars, Bumrah's unmatched art in pace 'scares' Philip Green. 'Well, you know, on the Indian side, I don't know who's my favourite, but the one who really scares me is Bumrah, I mean, you know, probably the best bowler in the world. It reminds me a bit of Max Walker, as sort of ugly as Max Walker in the run-up. And then when he gets to delivering the ball, it is all pace and grace and power. I love watching him,' Green told ANI on Monday. India is set to tour Australia in October for three ODIs and five T20Is. After the conclusion of India's white-ball tour, Australia will square off against England in one of the oldest rivalries existing in the sporting world. 'Well, it's going to be a fantastic summer of cricket. We're going to have the Indian team here for T20 in one day. We're going to have the iconic series with the English called the Ashes, and then we're going to have the Indian women's cricket team later in the season, so it doesn't get any better than that,' he added. The cricketing rivalry between India and Australia has risen in popularity over the past couple of years. The recent surge in the growing popularity of watching the two giants compete on the field resonates in the viewing figures fetched by the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The series was watched by 192.5M viewers on TV, recording 52 billion minutes of total watch-time across television and digital platforms. Apart from cricket, Green believes there is a huge economic opportunity between the two countries. 'Cricket is a wonderful connection between Australia and India, but there are more things to our relationship, and in particular, there's a huge economic opportunity between Australia and India. So our pitch to the Indian business community is to say, come for the cricket, but stay for the business,' he said. 'Since I've been in India, I've caught up with how that cricketing relationship and rivalry between Australia and India has truly blossomed. It is now the apex cricket rivalry in the world, surpassing the Ashes. To beat India for Australia, to beat 1.4 billion people with a lot of cricket bats and a lot of capability, that's a huge thing for an Australian team to be able to do,' he added. (ANI)

Virat Kohli 'wanted to continue' in Tests but may have lacked BCCI support: Mohammad Kaif
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has suggested that Virat Kohli was keen to continue playing Test cricket but may not have received the necessary backing from the BCCI. read more Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif feels Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket due to a lack of support from the management or the selectors. Kaif added that Kohli was very much interested in continuing his Test career and whatever happened behind the scenes led to his sudden retirement. Kohli, who is known for his love for Test cricket, stunned the cricketing world after calling it quits in Test cricket on 12 May, a little over one month before the five-match Test series in England. Kohli retired just a few days after Rohit Sharma also decided to retire from Test cricket. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Kohli did not get BCCI's support' Kaif, however, is not convinced Kohli took the decision on his own . He feels the lack of support the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee forced him to retire from tests, as by playing in the Ranji Trophy match for Delhi earlier, the 36-year-old had shown that he was ready to continue in the five-day format . 'I think he wanted to continue in the format. There must have been some internal talks with the BCCI, the selectors may have cited his form in the past 5-6 years and told him his spot in the team may no longer be there. We will never find out what happened, it is very difficult to guess what actually took place behind the scenes,' Kaif told news agency IANS. 'But given the last minute decision, having played the Ranji trophy, I definitely think he wanted to come back in the upcoming Tests. The developments in the last few weeks, he may have not gotten the support he thought he will get from BCCI and selectors which he may not have gotten,' he added. Poor Australia tour could have driven Kohli to retirement Further explaining Kohli's decision, Kaif added that the poor performance in Australia, where he constantly got out in slips, must have also played a role. 'In the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he looked in a hurry to score runs. You have to stay out for hours and grind in Test cricket, which he has done in the past but the constant edging of the ball moving away from him while attempting to drive, made me feel his patience was a bit less,' Kaif said. 'Maybe he was thinking 'I am in the last phase of my career what's the point of scoring a gritty century, there used to be a different level of patience on display from him before, he used to leave the balls, take his time, tire the bowlers and then took them down but I did not see that from him in Australia'.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'That one method of dismissal at the slips perhaps shows that he was not ready to spend hours at the crease. The communication from BCCI and the self-realization in red-ball cricket may have led to the decision,' he added. Kohli scored just 190 runs in nine innings at 23.75 on the Australia tour.
