Virat Kohli 'wanted to continue' in Tests but may have lacked BCCI support: Mohammad Kaif
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has suggested that Virat Kohli was keen to continue playing Test cricket but may not have received the necessary backing from the BCCI. read more
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif feels Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket due to a lack of support from the management or the selectors. Kaif added that Kohli was very much interested in continuing his Test career and whatever happened behind the scenes led to his sudden retirement.
Kohli, who is known for his love for Test cricket, stunned the cricketing world after calling it quits in Test cricket on 12 May, a little over one month before the five-match Test series in England. Kohli retired just a few days after Rohit Sharma also decided to retire from Test cricket.

'Kohli did not get BCCI's support'
Kaif, however, is not convinced Kohli took the decision on his own . He feels the lack of support the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee forced him to retire from tests, as by playing in the Ranji Trophy match for Delhi earlier, the 36-year-old had shown that he was ready to continue in the five-day format .
'I think he wanted to continue in the format. There must have been some internal talks with the BCCI, the selectors may have cited his form in the past 5-6 years and told him his spot in the team may no longer be there. We will never find out what happened, it is very difficult to guess what actually took place behind the scenes,' Kaif told news agency IANS.
'But given the last minute decision, having played the Ranji trophy, I definitely think he wanted to come back in the upcoming Tests. The developments in the last few weeks, he may have not gotten the support he thought he will get from BCCI and selectors which he may not have gotten,' he added.
Poor Australia tour could have driven Kohli to retirement
Further explaining Kohli's decision, Kaif added that the poor performance in Australia, where he constantly got out in slips, must have also played a role.
'In the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he looked in a hurry to score runs. You have to stay out for hours and grind in Test cricket, which he has done in the past but the constant edging of the ball moving away from him while attempting to drive, made me feel his patience was a bit less,' Kaif said.
'Maybe he was thinking 'I am in the last phase of my career what's the point of scoring a gritty century, there used to be a different level of patience on display from him before, he used to leave the balls, take his time, tire the bowlers and then took them down but I did not see that from him in Australia'.'

'That one method of dismissal at the slips perhaps shows that he was not ready to spend hours at the crease. The communication from BCCI and the self-realization in red-ball cricket may have led to the decision,' he added.
Kohli scored just 190 runs in nine innings at 23.75 on the Australia tour.

Sourav Ganguly reveals why Rohit Sharma was reluctant to become Test captain after Virat Kohli; how he changed his mind
Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has revealed how Rohit Sharma was convinced to take over India's Test captaincy after Virat Kohli stepped down. Ganguly shared details of Rohit's initial hesitation and how a conversation changed his mind. read more Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has shared some interesting insights into how Rohit Sharma became India's Test captain after Virat Kohli stepped down. Rohit was appointed the captain of Team India across formats after Kohli gave up the role in 2021–22, following a difficult period in which India lost to Pakistan for the first time in a World Cup match and were defeated by South Africa in a Test series. Speaking to PTI, Ganguly explained how Rohit was initially hesitant about taking the responsibility but eventually agreed after some convincing. Ganguly was at the top post of Indian cricket at the time and played a role in convincing Rohit for the job. Ganguly revealed that Rohit didn't want to take up Test captaincy because of the workload management. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We always wanted Virat to be captain, but he did not want to continue. And that's what it was. And then obviously Rohit came in, he was captaining Mumbai Indians. He was captaining 50-over, T20. We needed a test captain because Virat Kohli was Test captain by then and he finished in South Africa. I always believed that Rohit was a very good captain. So obviously, the request from the board, I went to him that you know you should captain in test matches. He was reluctant because of workload,' Ganguly told PTI. Here's how Ganguly convinced Rohit Ganguly said that he had a personal conversation with Rohit about how he shouldn't end his Test career without captaining India. 'But then I remember having a conversation with him that, you don't want to finish your career without captaining Indian test matches. So that struck a chord with him, and then he took a couple of days and then he agreed. He's a very adjustable person, very friendly person, if you have conversations with him, he'll agree and accept and do things. And why wouldn't anybody want to be in this test game?,' he added. Rohit took over the Test captaincy in 2022 and led India in multiple series, including the 2023 World Test Championship final, where they lost to eventual winners Australia. In the 2023–25 WTC cycle, Rohit led the team brilliantly before a slump in the latter stages, with back-to-back losses against New Zealand and Australia. India also suffered their first-ever home Test series defeat to the Kiwis. After their loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, India failed to qualify for the WTC final. Rohit announced his retirement from the longest format last month, days before the BCCI unveiled the squad for the England series in the new WTC cycle. Kohli also stepped down a few days later, announcing his retirement on social media. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Sourav Ganguly's Blunt Message To Indian Bowlers Seeking 'Support' For Jasprit Bumrah
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is hoping that fellow pacers will contribute more in the ongoing Test series against England and release pressure from pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah so that he can be available for all five matches of the tour. Bumrah was India's standout bowler and helped the side to bundle out hosts for 465 in their first innings on Day 3. He returned with the figures of 5-83 in 24.4 overs. Despite being injury-prone and also managing his workload on the tour, he bowled the second-most overs for India, Mohammed Siraj bowled the most - 27 overs - for the visiting side. Former BCCI president lauded Bumrah's adaptability to contribute in all formats of the game for the country. However, the legendary left-handed batter pointed out a lack of support from fellow pacers including Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna and Siraj. Krishna bagged three wickets while Siraj got hold of two scalps but both of them leaked more than hundred runs which reduced India's first-innings lead to just six runs. Ganguly believes Bumrah's presence in India's playing XI will keep them alive in the five-Test crucial series on challenging English conditions. "Such a pleasure to watch Bumrah bowl in all formats of the game .. hopefully he will get support from the other end so that he can play 5 tests .. it will keep India in the series .. @bcci @Jaspritbumrah93," Ganguly wrote on X. Such a pleasure to watch Bumrah bowl in all formats of the game .. hope fully he will get support from the other end so that he can play 5 tests .. it will keep india in the series .. @bcci @Jaspritbumrah93 — Sourav Ganguly (@SGanguly99) June 23, 2025 After the end of play on Sunday, Bumrah credited his belief to play for India for more than a decade despite his injury struggles due to his unorthodox action. "I always wanted to play for India. I played for India on my belief. I have played every format on my belief. I have always heard 'no' from people. First they said 'you won't be able to play'; then they said 'you will last only six months'; then they said 'you will last only eight months', and just like that I have spent ten years in international cricket listening to all this. I have played the IPL for 12-13 years. "Even now people keep saying this injury will be it. Keep waiting, I will not think about that. I will keep doing my work. Every three-four months there will be headlines but, let's see, I will play till it is in my destiny. I prepare my best, and leave the rest to god. Whatever barkat (abundance or good fortune) god has given me, I try to carry it forward, and try to take Indian cricket forward." On Day 4, India will resume their second innings from 90/2 with captain Shubman Gill, who scored a career-best 147 in the first innings, unbeaten on 6 while opener KL Rahul is not out on 47. India are leading by 96 runs.

Prithvi Shaw Leaves Mumbai After Obtaining NOC From State Association
Last Updated: Prithvi Shaw has been granted No Objection Certificate by the Mumbai Cricket Association to leave the state team. Prithvi Shaw has obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) with the opener set to join a new team for the upcoming domestic season. 'The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) would like to inform that cricketer Prithvi Shaw had formally requested a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to represent another state as a professional player in the upcoming domestic season. After due consideration, the MCA has granted the NOC," news agency PTI quoted MCA as saying. MCA Secretary Abhay Hadap lauded Shaw for his contribution to Mumbai cricket. 'Prithvi Shaw has been an exceptional talent and has contributed significantly to Mumbai cricket. We respect his decision and wish him the very best in his future endeavours," Hadap said. In a letter to the MCA, Shaw stated his desire to move on from Mumbai having been dropped midway through the Ranji Trophy season last December on fitness issues. 'I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for the valuable opportunities and unwavering support extended to me during my time representing the association. It has truly been an honour and a privilege to be part of the MCA setup, and I am deeply grateful for the exposure and experience I have gained here," he wrote. Shaw explained why he wishes to join a new team. 'At this juncture in my career, I have been presented with a promising opportunity to play professional cricket under another State Association, which I believe will further contribute to my growth and development as a cricketer. 'In light of this, I kindly request you to issue me a No Objection Certificate (NOC) that will enable me to officially represent the new State Association in the upcoming domestic season," he said. Shaw's playing career has been hit by inconsistency, disciplinary concerns and fitness issues. After being dropped from the Ranji squad, Shaw last played for Mumbai in the final of the premier domestic tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy and wasn't considered for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
