Shokz OpenFit 2 review: Open-ear design is a breath of fresh air for your ears

Open-ear headphones have evolved significantly from their early bone-conduction predecessors, offering enhanced comfort, improved sound quality, and a more immersive overall listening experience without compromising situational awareness. The Shokz OpenFit 2 produce a rich sound through air conduction while keeping your ears open to the world. I've spent the past couple of weeks living, cycling, and even DIYing with them, and they've earned a spot in my everyday carry. Design Shokz has refined its open-ear approach with the OpenFit 2. The curved ear hook design blends soft lines with robust construction. Each earbud weighs just 9.4g, and despite their lightweight feel, they don't skimp on build quality. A flexible nickel-titanium alloy provides a snug yet gentle grip, while the matte finish adds a premium touch. The magnetic pogo-pin charging connectors snap neatly into the included case, which is relatively compact and practical. It's not flashy, but it's functional, with a USB-C port and clearly labelled LED indicators. The understated design feels thoughtfully considered, clearly made for users who prefer substance over style. Comfort and fit Using UltraSoft Silicone 2.0 and an open-ear design, the buds sit just outside your ear canal, delivering audio without the in-ear pressure typically associated with traditional earbuds. I wore them for hours on end, at my computer, cycling, and even while doing house chores, and never once felt discomfort or fatigue. They don't budge either. Whether I was walking or cycling, they stayed put with zero slippage. Features The OpenFit 2 features IP55 water and dust resistance, ideal for sweaty workouts or unexpected drizzle. The headphones feature multi-point Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity, allowing you to switch effortlessly between devices, such as your phone and laptop. I found this especially useful for listening to music on my MacBook Pro while seamlessly taking calls on my phone without needing to reconnect manually. The physical button controls are refreshingly reliable, with no accidental taps or misfires. Each button has a satisfying, positive click, making them easy and reassuring to use. You can customise them via the Shokz app, which also offers EQ controls, firmware updates, and a 'Find My Earbuds' option. Unlike many rivals, there is no mandatory account registration required to use the app. A 10-minute quick charge gives around two hours of use. Full charge yields up to 11 hours, with a total of 48 hours from the case. Performance Pairing is instant, connection is rock-solid, and latency is negligible when watching video content. The OpenFit 2 handles everything from podcasts to phone calls with clarity, thanks to dual microphones and effective noise reduction. Ambient awareness remains high, allowing me to hear traffic and conversations around me, a significant safety advantage when cycling or engaging in other outdoor activities. Of course, if you prefer listening to music at higher volumes, it can reduce your ability to hear what's going on around you. Sound quality I'll admit I was sceptical about audio performance. Open-ear designs are typically lacking in bass and body. However, Shokz's OpenBass 2.0 algorithm, combined with a 17.3mm driver and a separate high-frequency unit, delivers a remarkably full-bodied experience. Considering the open design, the bass is present, punchy, and well-controlled, even at lower volumes. The highs sparkle, vocals come through cleanly, and there's enough warmth to handle everything from acoustic folk to synth-heavy electronica. No, it won't replace your over-ear cans for audiophile sessions, but for an open-ear daily driver, it's superb. Verdict The Shokz OpenFit 2 are lightweight, secure, and sound far better than expected for an open-ear set. The all-day comfort, superb battery life, and strong ambient awareness make it a near-perfect choice for fitness-focused users and those who dislike in-ear designs. €189 Harvey Norman

The Nank Runner Air headphones are designed for outdoor and indoor sports | Nank This article contains affiliate links. Nank is a company you might not have heard of before, but I've tested some of their flagship "Runner Diver" bone conduction headphones before, and they were mighty impressive. So when I was offered a chance to test a much cheaper pair of their new Runner Air headphones, I was keen to take the opportunity. Unlike the Runner Divers, these use air conduction. Air conduction transmits a sound directly into the ear, unlike the extremely clever bone conduction system which sends sound waves through the bones in your skull. The result, in theory, is a better quality sound, but often at the cost of a little comfort, as they have to sit much closer to your ear, rather than rest gently on the skin just in front of them. Also unlike the Runner Divers, the Runner Airs don't have noise cancelling, and they don't have the same level of waterproofing, but they are cheap. Seriously cheap. Air conduction works differently to bone conduction, but can deliver a much richer sound | Nank If you can catch a deal on Nank's website you'll save 40% off the £74.63 benchmark price, bringing the cost down to £44.78. However, Nank has offered our readers a code knocking a further 15% off at the checkout, which brings them down to about £38. Just enter Skimlinks15 at the checkout. It's a seriously tempting price, then, but are they any good? Fundamentally, air conduction should sound better. It should offer a deeper bass and more clarity to the high notes. There isn't a remarkable difference, truth be told, between these and the Runner Divers, but they do cost around a third of the price. So that's not surprising. Importantly, though, they don't sound bad. There's plenty of definition to the sound, and given that these are open ear headphones, they have more punch and volume than you might expect. Especially for the price. They fit securely and the battery life is good | Nank They fit nicely and securely, and they're able to cope with a few generous splashes, thanks to IPX5 waterproofing. Bluetooth 5.4 is a nice edition, and the battery life is very impressive, with up to 10 hours of playtime. Sports headphones predominantly need to feel secure and comfortable. Sound quality and functionality is a bonus beyond that, and these definitely tick the right boxes. I also really love the stylish red and blue colour, although a more sober white and grey is available too. For this price, especially after our exclusive discount, they really do punch above their weight. Of course, if you spend more you'll get a higher quality sound, or perhaps a better battery life, but it's hard to see why you'd bother. Unless you're a geeky audiophile, or you're into extreme sports, these will be absolutely fine for most people.

These retro wireless headphones are hotter than Mr Motivator's lycra onesie

Unless you're wearing a shellsuit while watching a Betamax video of Roland Rat driving a Sinclair C5 to Woolworths to pick up a copy of No Jacket Required by Phil Collins, there are few things that look more '80s than these KM5 Lightwear Headphones Hp1. Originally crowdfunded in Japan last year, enough people wanted to look like Marty McFly that these retro headphones are now available to buy for £159/$189 – and they've had some important upgrades to make them fit for use in 2025 rather than 1985. For starters there's Bluetooth 5.4 with LE Audio support, so you don't need to worry about finding something with a 3.5mm port to plug them into, and even though they sit on your ears rather than fully covering them you get noise-cancelling with a transparency mode too. At 103g they're more than twice the weight of the original Sony Walkman headphones they mimic, but those didn't have a 120mAh battery attached on each side, plus they still make the new Sony WH-1000XM6 look like they're made out of lead. There are no wires to connect the two sides, so you need to charge both batteries independently. Fortunately there's a special split cable included in the box, and they should last up to 24 hours between charges, which is more than enough for the full discographies of both Phil Collins and Roland Rat. As well as those batteries, each earcup is also home to a 40mm driver and a set of controls. You can adjust the volume, skip through your tunes, and also summon your phone's voice assistant. The KM5 Lightwear Headphones Hp1 are available in two different colours, both with swappable magnetic ear cushions. The white ones come with gray and turquoise, while the black ones get black and dark red. Choose the pair that best matches your shellsuit.
