What to Stream: 'The Bear,' Lorde, 'Smoke,' 'A Minecraft Movie,' 'Nosferatu' and Nelly and Ashanti

The Jack Black-led movie phenomenon 'A Minecraft Movie' and Lorde's fourth studio album, "Virgin," are some of the new television, films, music and games headed to a device near you. Also among the streaming offerings worth your time, as selected by The Associated Press' entertainment journalists: All 10 episodes of season four of FX's 'The Bear' drop Wednesday, Nelly and Ashanti get their own reality show and Bill Skarsgård leads an update of the 1922 silent vampire classic 'Nosferatu.' New movies to stream from June 23-29 — The Porky Pig and Daffy Duck movie 'The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie' is coming to HBO Max on Friday, June 27 (it will also broadcast on HBO on June 28 at 8 p.m. ET). Reviews were a little mixed, but mostly positive for the full-length animated feature. Bob Strauss wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle that 'The laugh ratio is more hit-and-miss than in the tightly scripted shorts, but enough jokes land to satisfy most funny bones.' The film had a wild ride to end up where it was originally intended, including a theatrical release in December not from Warner Bros. but Ketchup Entertainment (who will also distribute the previously shelved 'Coyote vs. Acme' ). — Mariska Hargitay's documentary about her mother Jayne Mansfield, 'My Mom Jayne,' will also be streaming on HBO Max on Friday, June 27. The Hollywood bombshell died in a car accident at 34, when Hargitay was only 3. — La-la-la-lava, ch-ch-ch-chicken, Steve's lava chicken is now streaming on HBO Max, as is the rest of 'A Minecraft Movie.' A box office phenomenon with over $950 million in worldwide ticket sales and counting, this movie adaptation of the popular game stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa. In his AP review, Mark Kennedy wrote that 'the Jared Hess-directed action-adventure artfully straddles the line between delighting preteen gamers and keeping their parents awake. It's an often-bananas adaptation, with bizarre digressions into turquoise blouses and tater tot pizzas. It has Jennifer Coolidge being very Jennifer Coolidge. Need we say more?' — Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård lead the Robert Eggers-directed update of the 1922 silent vampire classic 'Nosferatu,' streaming on Prime Video starting Friday, June 27. Jocelyn Noveck wrote in her AP review that 'it will chill you to the bone' but that 'it may not terrify you.' Everything, she adds, in Eggers 'faithful, even adoring remake... looks great. But with its stylized, often stilted dialogue and overly dramatic storytelling, it feels more like everyone is living in a quaint period painting rather than a world populated by real humans (and, well, vampires) made of flesh and, er, blood.' New music to stream from June 23-29 — What will the next era of Lorde look like? 'What Was That,' the singer's first new single in four years, recalls the clever synth-pop of her 2017 album 'Melodrama,' casting aside the folk detour of 2021's 'Solar Power.' The song that followed, 'Man of the Year,' is stripped and spare – just Lorde and a sorrowful bass. Who knows what will come next? Listeners will have to wait until Friday, June 27, when she releases her fourth studio album, 'Virgin.' — The 'F1' movie, starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, is quickly gearing up to be a summer tentpole. Naturally, the filmmakers knew its sound had to be massive, too. That arrives via a score by the many-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer and a huge soundtrack releasing as 'F1 The Album' via Atlantic Records, the team behind the award-winning 'Barbie' album — with bespoke tracks from Chris Stapleton, Ed Sheeran, Myke Towers, Blackpink's Rosé, Tate McRae and many more. Learn all about how the soundtrack came together here. — On Friday, June 27, arty alt-rock legends Failure will receive documentary treatment in 'Every Time You Lose Your Mind: A Film about Failure,' available to stream on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. The unorthodox and influential band finally gets their due in the project, directed by frontman Ken Andrews. And don't worry if Failure isn't a familiar name to you. Some of the featured voices in the documentary certainly will be: Paramore's Hayley Williams, actor Jason Schwartzman, comedian Margaret Cho, legendary producers Steve Albini and Butch Vig and many more participate. — AP Music Writer Maria Sherman New series to stream from June 23-29 — All 10 episodes of season four of FX's 'The Bear' drop Wednesday on Hulu. Viewers will find out if Michelin-starred chef Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) can successfully run an acclaimed and profitable fine dining restaurant in Chicago. The series has led to acting awards for White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas. — Jensen Ackles ('Supernatural,' 'Tracker') stars in a new crime thriller series for Prime Video called 'Countdown.' Ackles plays a LAPD detective assigned to a task force investigating the murder of a government official. Eric Dane of 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Euphoria' also stars. It premieres Wednesday. — Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's second shot at love didn't work out but there's another celebrity couple who has rekindled a past flame. Recording artists Nelly and Ashanti were an item for more than 10 years before their breakup in 2013. They got back together in 2023 and are now married with a son. The pair are the subject of their own reality show called 'Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together.' It debuts Thursday on Peacock. — Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett star in the new thriller 'Smoke' for Apple TV+ as investigators working together to catch two serial arsonists. It's created by Dennis Lehane and based on a true story where an arson investigator turned out to be a serial arsonist. 'Smoke' reunites Egerton and Lehane who worked on the Apple limited-series 'Blackbird." John Leguizamo and Greg Kinnear also appear in 'Smoke,' out Friday. — 'Nautilus,' a reimagining of Jules Verne's novel 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas' comes to AMC+ Friday, June 29. It's an origin story of the character known as Captain Nemo and portrayed by Shazad Latif. Nemo is an Indian prince whose birthright was stolen from him and he's on a mission for revenge. — Alicia Rancilio New video games to play from June 23-29 — In 2019's Death Stranding, a courier named Sam worked to reconnect survivors in a postapocalyptic America beset by 'beached things,' gooey monsters trapped between the worlds of the living and the dead. Sam is back in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, but now he faces a question we've all asked in the internet age: Was connecting everyone really such a good idea? The series is the brainchild of legendary 'Metal Gear Solid' mastermind Hideo Kojima, and fans know they can expect a complex story, flamboyant graphics and some off-the-wall gameplay ideas. (The original included a lot of walking and inventory management next to some mind-blowing boss battles.) Norman Reedus of 'The Walking Dead' returns as Sam, and yes, he's still carrying a baby who has psychic powers. Embrace the weirdness Thursday on PlayStation 5.

Why viewers had to ‘applaud' the fate of Justin Long's character in horror film Barbarian

What do you get when producers from some of the world's best horror films join forces in one movie? According to one critic, you get a 'masterclass in tension and unpredictability'. The producers of It, The Grudge and The Ring all worked together on the horror thriller Barbarian, which is currently one of the top films available for free on streaming platform Tubi right now. Starring Justin Long, Bill Skarsgård and Bird Box actress Georgina Campbell, the premise is very modern-day but the thrills are a throwback to classic horror. Picture this: you arrive at your Airbnb in the suburbs only to find it is double-booked by a mysterious tenant named Keith (Skarsgård). It's a stormy night so he invites you in, arguing that you can just co-habitate for the night as he's harmless. What do you do? For Tess (Campbell), she accepts the invitation, albeit reluctantly. After a surprisingly pleasant night exchanging life stories, the scenario becomes increasingly disturbing when she discovers a secret compartment in the house's basement. Suddenly, suburbia turns sinister. Long plays disgraced Hollywood actor AJ Gilbride who is the owner of the Airbnb. When he finds himself in financial strife after being fired from a movie when accused of raping his co-star, he returns to the home to prep it for sale, only to find that his investment property holds a horrifying secret beneath the house. The film was released in 2022 and became one of the most compelling films that year. So impactful, some fans have already added it to their rewatch list. 'Rewatched Barbarian, still impressed that what begins as a Your Worst Airbnb Fears movie takes a radical turn and delivers. Caught more on a rewatch about the differences between who is a monster, and who is a predator,' one viewer tweeted. 'The movie that made me simultaneously terrified of both airbnb's AND any house with a basement,' added another. 'Full of great surprises, suspense, humour, and probably the craziest tonal heel-turn I've ever seen in a movie.' And yet another commented, 'I wish more horror movies were like this & didn't rely on jump scares!' The aforementioned predator is soon revealed in graphic scenes – a towering, naked and deformed woman that embodies both terror and tragedy. Known as 'The Mother', she appears more mutant than human – the product of decades of abuse, left to lurk in the house's underground tunnels with no light. However, her backstory is heartbreakingly disturbing as Tess and AJ learn after she savagely smashes Keith – who turned out to be a nice guy – in the head, killing him. But, in a shocking plot twist that will leave jaws on the floor, it is Long's character who holds the titular barbarian role thanks to his actions at the end. 'I'm a horror fan. To be in an audience of equally excited and passionate horror fans … and to hear them applaud my death — I know this sounds strange, but it was oddly thrilling for me,' Long told Vulture in a previous interview. 'It meant that they were invested and I did my job. That his character was truly deplorable and deserving of a pretty rough ending.'

11 Must-Watch Thrillers on Netflix Right Now (May 2025)

Thrillers were once one of the most active genres on Netflix, but there's been a noticeable lack of new offerings in this category for a while. Fortunately for Netflix, the streamer's lean selection allows subscribers to revisit some of the older thrillers like The Hateful Eight, which hit theaters almost a decade ago. The Netflix original thriller, The Devil All of the Time, also had some sizzle when it debuted in 2020 with a ridiculously stacked cast including Tom Holland, Bill Skarsgård, Riley Keough, Robert Pattinson, Eliza Scanlen and Mia Wasikowska. You can find these films and more among the Watch With Us team's picks for the must-see thrillers on Netflix right now. Need more recommendations? Then check out the Great New Movies on Netflix, Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and More, the Best Movies on Amazon Prime Video Right Now, the Best Movies on Hulu Right Now and 4 Underrated Movies on Netflix in May his eighth film, writer and director Quentin Tarantino came up with a Western thriller he called The Hateful Eight. Kurt Russell plays John "the Hangman" Ruth, a man who's hard to like, but few could argue with his reputation as a bounty hunter. His latest bounty, "Crazy" Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), is chained to his arm as they travel by stagecoach. As a snowstorm builds, Ruth reluctantly allows a fellow bounty hunter, Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins) to join the group arrives at Minnie's Haberdashery, Ruth can't shake the feeling that something is off as he's surrounded by strangers, including Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), Bob (Chris Mannix) and a Confederate general, Sanford "Sandy" Smithers (Bruce Dern). Ruth isn't sure he can trust this group, or even the two men he rode into town with. But with the snowstorm in full roar, there's nowhere else to go. The Hateful Eight is streaming on Netflix. Donald Ray Pollock, the author of The Devil All the Time, got to narrate the Netflix adaptation of his novel, which weaves through the lives of multiple characters who share unexpected connections. In the late '50s, Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) is a disturbed young man who has very strong feelings for his childhood friend, Lenora Laferty (Eliza Scanlen). And he's increasingly angry over the way Reverend Preston Teagardin (Robert Pattinson) grooms Lenora for a sexual relationship. Arvin is also aware of the sins of his late father, Willard Russell (Bill Skarsgård), which stay with his son as an adult. What Arvin isn't aware of is that his path is also going to cross with Carl (Jason Clarke) and Sandy Henderson (Riley Keough), a dangerous couple that might like to see him Devil All the Time is streaming on Netflix. The late Euphoria star Angus Cloud had one of his final roles in Your Lucky Day as Sterling, a young man who is badly in need of some luck. Sterling thinks his luck has changed when he overhears a lottery winner, Mr. Laird (Spencer Garrett), bragging about his good fortune. When Sterling demands the ticket at gunpoint, chaos ensues in the convenience store, leaving two gunshot victims and three witnesses: Ana Marlene (Jessica Garza), her boyfriend, Abraham (Elliot Knight), and the store clerk, Amir (Mousa Hussein Kraish). Sterling offers to split the prize money with the witnesses if they help him cover up his crimes. But there are several flaws in Sterling's plan, not the least of which is that he's underestimated what other people are willing to do to get that ticket for themselves. By the time this story concludes, there may not be anyone left to enjoy their fortune. Your Lucky Day is streaming on Netflix. For his directorial debut, screenwriter Oren Uziel unravels the story of Shimmer Lake in reverse by revealing that Andy Sikes (Rainn Wilson) is hiding out from his brother, Sheriff Zeke Sikes (Benjamin Walker), after participating in a bank robbery. And before Uziel shows the audience what happened to set up this situation, he teases a mystery that will unfold during the rest of the film. Andy and his friends, Chris Morrow (Mark Rendall) and Ed Burton (Wyatt Russell), thought they pulled off the heist of their lifetimes. However, this trio may be their own worst enemies, especially when they start turning on each other. They collectively have enough money to do almost anything, but greed may be their downfall. Shimmer Lake is streaming on Netflix. Training Day director Antoine Fuqua and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto teamed up for The Guilty, a remake of a 2018 Dutch thriller. The vast majority of the movie centers on LAPD officer Joe Baylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) in a single location as the story plays out through his phone is stuck on duty answering 911 calls pending a disciplinary hearing when he receives an alarming call from Emily Lighton (Riley Keough). Emily tells Baylor that she's been abducted, but he has limited resources to find her kidnapper, and most of his fellow officers aren't going to help him. Baylor's partner, Sergeant Bill Miller (Ethan Hawke), reluctantly does some of the legwork, but what he finds at Emily's home is disturbing. And time is running out to locate Emily before another tragedy occurs. The Guilty is streaming on Netflix. Maika Monroe has made a name for herself as a scream queen in movies like It Follows, and she's certainly got a lot of reasons to scream in Watcher. Julia already felt like a stranger in a strange land when she moved to Bucharest with her husband, Francis (Karl Glusman). But she can't escape the sensation that she's always being watched. Torchwood's Burn Gorman gives a creepy performance as Daniel Weber, the man Julia believes is stalking her. Daniel claims that Julia is the one harassing him, which the police find more convincing than her story. There is a serial killer on the loose, and even Julia has to wonder if she's letting her fear rule her actions. She'll get her answer — it just may not be the one she's looking is streaming on Netflix. Director David Fincher never discloses the true name of the title character in The Killer, but Michael Fassbender conveys just how diligent and prepared he is for everything except failure. Scott (Mahershala Ali), arrives with his daughter, Ruth (Myha'la), to take shelter as technology seemingly fails everywhere. What started as a family excursion may turn into a trip that the Sandfords may not come home from. It might even turn out to be the end of the world. Leave the World Behind is streaming on Netflix.
