Is it time to hang up on these great red relics?
I n Parliament Square this week, I had to jostle to pass a queue. Reaching the front, I saw what it was for: a red telephone box. But no one was actually making calls. Instead each tourist took their turn, leaning against Gilbert Scott's design classic while a friend snapped a picture with Big Ben in the background. This is, I suppose, why this particular telephone box remains. But it was an empty shell. It didn't even bear the once traditional central London wallpaper of escort calling cards to save its dignity. Presumably that business has gone on to mobile phones too. It had all the melancholic pointlessness of a giant panda being played sexy music by its keepers in the hope it will finally reproduce, or some new scheme to shore up Venice. Sometimes even the noblest of heritage cannot be saved. Just let them die in dignity.

Ben Roethlisberger paints troubling picture for Steelers, T.J. Watt contract situation
Everyone has an opinion on the T.J. Watt holdout that appears to be brewing — including Steelers legendary QB Ben Roethlisberger. On his podcast, Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, Big Ben discussed the possibility of Watt and the Steelers being far apart on a potential deal and compared the situation to his infamous "hold-in" in 2021: Advertisement "This year he's not there — and so you asked the question, what's the difference? I don't know. Only T.J. knows the difference. My only speculation and guess — and it's because you brought it up — [the Steelers and Watt] must not be close," argued Big Ben. "Like, if you're close — I would think T.J. would do what he did last time, like, 'Okay, we're close. We'll get this thing done.' Maybe they're not even in the ballpark, and T.J.'s like, 'Why am I coming if we're not in the ballpark?'" Roethlisberger's speculative take makes perfect sense — as reaching the new $40 million per year standard set by Browns DE Myles Garrett makes these negotiations far more difficult. Mill sale awaits Commerce Commission approval
The sale of a farmer-owned flour mill in South Canterbury's Washdyke must get Commerce Commission clearance to go ahead. The commission has received an application from George Weston Foods, trading as Mauri New Zealand, to buy the wheat milling and storage assets, including land, used by Farmers Mill. A purchase price was undisclosed with the sale subject to conditions including regulatory approval from the commission. The mill was opened at Washdyke in 2013 as New Zealand's only independent grower-owned and operated flour producer. Farmers Mill supplies bulk and bagged flour to industrial food manufacturers, bakeries, and some retailers. The mill is owned by Grainstor, South Island's largest grain storage facility. Directors for both companies are listed as Ashley Biggs, Raymond Bowan, Antony Howey and Murray Turley. A Commerce Commission spokeswoman said in a statement the commission could only give clearance to a proposed merger if it was satisfied it was unlikely to have the effect of substantially lessening competition in a market. Mauri operates flour mills in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, supplying flour in bulk to large users of flour such as industrial food manufacturers and bagged flour to wholesalers, bakeries and supermarkets. Mauri flour is also used by George Weston Foods' bakery division to produce breads and bakery goods under brands including Tip Top bread and Big Ben pies. Australian-based George Weston Foods is owned by Associated British Foods Plc, a company listed on the London Stock Exchange. Both Mauri and Farmers Mill also supply broll, which is a by-product of the wheat milling process and most commonly used as an input for animal feed. Farmers Mill bought its wheat milling plant from a company in Italy in 2012 for about $12 million. When the mill was launched the following year with former prime minister John Key cutting the ribbon, Mr Turley, as chairman, said South Canterbury arable farmers had teamed up to mill their own grain to gain more control of their grain production and create a homegrown product. "We have harnessed our own resources to secure the industry's future investing more than $10m to get Farmers Mill up and running," he said. Initially 12 local farmers were involved in the ground-up building of the mill. The commission expects to make a decision by early August.

Empire State Building Dissing Eiffel Tower Goes Viral
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. New York City's most famous landmark took an unexpected swipe at Paris's Eiffel Tower in a viral TikTok soundtracked to Sabrina Carpenter's "Manchild." The Empire State Building's official TikTok account, @empirestatebldg, shared a compilation of images of the Eiffel Tower timed to the lyrics: "Baby, what do you call it? Stupid / Or is it slow? Maybe it's useless? But there's a cuter word for it, I know," before the kicker: "Manchild," as a loveheart explodes over the Parisian monument. The video garnered 73,900 likes and 422,100 views on TikTok. "Thanks for my new anthem! @Sabrina Carpenter," it captioned the post. "Manchild" is the "Espresso" singer's latest single—a poppy, country-inflected anthem that takes aim at underwhelming men. The Empire State Building's account is known for its satirical content and frequent appearances by celebrity visitors to New York's most iconic skyscraper. Built in 1931 and standing 1,454 feet tall including its antenna, the Art Deco marvel has long been a symbol of American ambition and architecture. Recently, the account has gone viral for embracing an ongoing fictional romance with London's Big Ben. Addressing rumors that it had broken up with "Big," the Empire State Building clarified the relationship is still going strong—though it revealed it did split from the Eiffel Tower because "he's ugly and a cheater." The Eiffel Tower, completed in 1889 and originally intended as a temporary installation for the World's Fair, has become an enduring emblem of Paris. Standing at 300 meters tall, the highest man-made structure in the world at that time. Known as "La Tour Eiffel" in French, the monument is feminine in grammatical gender—something that didn't go unnoticed by TikTok users. A stock image showing Paris's Eiffel Tower. Completed in 1859, the tower is one of the U.K.'s most recognizable landmarks and has become a global symbol of British governance and identity. TikTokers were quick to weigh in on the landmark drama. "Why is the empire state beefing with the Eiffel tower," asked one user. "If I remember correctly it's bc she stole big ben or she left for big ben lmao it's something like that. Love triangle between them three for sure tho," said another. "I will NOT be taking this type of slander for our European queen," commented a user named Ellise. "Well actually in French the Eiffel Tower is 'La Tour Eiffel' which is feminine so it's not a man. Thus calling the Eiffel Tower 'Manchild' isn't correct," another pointed out. "Don't forget, we gave you the Statue of Liberty," a French user reminded them. "You can't tell me gen z isn't running this account. I am here for it," added Brooklyn. Newsweek reached out to @empirestatebldg for comment via TikTok and email. Former QB blasts Mike Tomlin, Steelers' Aaron Rodgers signing: 'Definition of insanity'
Steelers HC Mike Tomlin has come under fire after news of the Aaron Rodgers signing broke — and former NFL QB Chase Daniel isn't holding back. Back in January, Tomlin claimed that "it's not like doing I've been doing the same things over [and over]" — but Daniel explained that the Rodgers signing proves the exact opposite (courtesy of The Facility): Advertisement "That's completely false, because you have been doing the same thing over and over. The Steelers have been in this situation before — an aging quarterback, trying to resurrect his career, that needs to be propped up by the NFL's most expensive defense. They tried to muddle last season with 36-year-old Russell Wilson — what did it get them? A first-round exit — not a playoff win. Russell Wilson went 6-5," Daniel criticized. "They did it with Big Ben [Roethlisberger] in his late 30s for a few years — Ben was 9-7 his last season. It didn't work. They're trying to do it again with Aaron Rodgers this year — in what possibly could be Aaron Rodgers' last season as a pro." Daniel would conclude with a powerful criticism of Tomlin's strategy over the past few years — one that many Steelers fans may agree with: "[The Steelers are] doing exactly what Mike Tomlin said he wasn't doing, and the definition of that in the dictionary — if I'm not wrong, [Emmanuel] Acho — is insanity." Could Rodgers serve as the outlier to Tomlin's failed attempts to rely on aging QBs, or will he ultimately become the last nail in the coffin for the Steelers head coach's tenure in Pittsburgh?
